Hey what is the style of jazz called that is characterized by fast rythms with lots of ride cymbal tapping, fast walking bass, and flashy improv horns or piano on the top? Like the groovy stuff you'd expect to hear in a tiny, crowded, smoky, late-night back-alley sort of place.

This kind of Jazz is generally called Be-bop, which started in the early 50s and best exemplified by Charley Parker (Bird). This then morphed into a style in the 60s often referred to a "modern jazz". And yes, Brubeck is a prominent member of that school of jazz and best known for his pioneering work of using (and swinging) odd time signatures like 5/4 9/8 12/8 etc. There is also a style of jazz that became prominent is the 60s and 70s that is a little further out often referred to as third stream or avante guard.
Then there is the stuff that folks like Diana Krall do...essentially jazz standards and that is called "mainstream jazz". But as far as I'm concerned....Diana can do whatever she wants.

Thanks, folks, for keeping up the chats on jazz. Sometimes I think I'm the only one around who gives shizz.
Diana Krall AND her hubby kick aisss! I saw Elvis play at the Tennessee Theatre years ago- what a musician!
If youns like women who can play, go find Esperanza Spalding. She plays the doghouse bass beautifully- all the while being a cute, HAWT, petite lil thing- plus she sings/scats in Portuguese. Her debut CD will blow you away. New, and a must have for current collections... she was on Letterman a couple of months ago...
