Please tell me some stories about MOTORCYCLE trading. Have any tips on what to do and what not to do? What are some not so obvious questions to ask the other party? I've been burned in the past (young and dumb), I just don't want to get hosed again.

Thanks for your support.

Well, when you turn fifty, don't try to trade your equal aged wife in for two twenties. That will cause pain!

I'm still young and dumb, but I would just say that any immediate form of payment in your hand is a very good negotiator.

And decide before any bartering what the item is worth to you. If the other party wants more than you decided to give, then walk and prove that you don't need the item quite that bad.

Sorry about that... I just read your original post more carefully!!! You said MOTORCYCLE to begin with. I failed reading in junior high school.

Actually I've bought 2 motorcycles on ebay -one was a Hal's racebike and I bought it FROM HAL's HD so I knew who I was buying it from. Other bike was a vintage Honda VF500F racer. The guy let me go look it over (he lived an hour away).

I'd have to say that for machinery or valuable stuff, I'd want to see and touch it... or send a friend to do it.

I've found that some "deals" fall through when I ask if I can stop by or have a mechanic friend stop by. If you aren't buying from a reputable person and you can't check out the seller's background, I'd probably be a little bit spooked.

I bought my 2000 X1 off craigslist, but only after seeing it in person.

I bought my 2002 X1 off eBay, and had it shipped to OK from FL. It was advertised as "doesn't turn over" which turned out to be "quarter sized hole in front piston". Woops. Lesson learned.

Well....I have traded 2 bikes. The first was my X1.I had just bought my Uly & living in the land of flat..straight...boring roads,I realized I did not need 2 buells.I had a yearning to build another chopper & doing the RIGHT THING ment obtaining a sportster for a donor & delivering the X1 to the right person to save it from death.
I posted on a few boards for the trade. Both bikes where of similar value. We e-mailed & talked on the phone, picked a halfway point, met & looked over the bikes. He went home with the X1 & I went home with a stock sporty.Good trade.
The second bike I traded was the chopper that I built from the sporty I got in Trade.I had a lot of time & effort in the build but not much money.I had the itch for a supermoto for my local commuter bike as well as a cure for wheelie-itis,so once again I posted on some boards, craigslist, etc.I ended up finding a guy who wanted to trade strait up for my chop.Once again both bikes were of similar value & we commuicated thru e-mail & phone. We picked a halfway point, met, looked over bikes, handed over notorized titles,& left with a nice Sumo.
I think the key is;
similar value
communication
send each other lots of pics
having paperwork done ahead of time
and TRUST!
It takes a bit of trust in the fellow man,but that is what the communication part is used for.
I enjoy horse trading.Just use your head.
I also forgot about the '70 bonneville chopper(that required massive amounts of red loctite)that I traded for a new hot tub.THAT WAS A GOOD TRADE.The hot tub even has lights!

Thanks. Keep 'em coming. Not interested in ebay or CL tips, just trading a bike for a bike.

That may be true.... but I sure would like to try to plug into that 2-20 set up just once before I die.... LOL

Back on topic

I'm not looking for a trade here. Just a general question. Stuff like: Make sure there are no liens on the title, check the VIN, Has the thing been crashed, No salvaged titles, etc, etc. You know, the not so obvious stuff.

That's a good idea Wolfridgerider. I've often thought it would be nice to have a "For Trade" tab in the classified section. List what you have for trade and a price on it or what you think it's worth. That may open up a can 'o worms though for someone to say, "you think it's worth WHAT?"

You might want to find a shop that buys bikes on wholesale at dealer auctions, from private parties, from estate sales, from local trade ins and of course defaulting Big Box Retail shops; and check their inventory of low mileage Sport Bikes, Super Motos, Cruisers, Customs, Race bikes, Harley-Davidson & Buell....
One that has the ability to professionally inspect, service, dyno and customize your chosen ride. ; ) nudge nudge wink wink he says knowingly.

PS, I dont need two twenty somethings... I am willing make exceptions for a hot mom/daughter weekend bender.

I have my eye on a 2004 KTM 950 Adv. The guy would like to trade it for my 2006 Uly. The values, and mileage are about equal. He wants a more pavement oriented bike and I want the opposite. We are in the same state a few hours from each other. So, it's not a big deal to drive down and look at each other's bike. If one of us wasn't sure, it wouldn't be a problem to just take the bike home and think about it. We wouldn't be under the pressure of "Well, I just traveled a great distance, so I feel obligated to follow through with the deal".
