After practicing cartwheels alongside a Texas Hill Country road with my X1, the formerly beautiful BuellieMae (not a good idea, I now realize), I've been drawn ever closer to the Dark Side by The Nazgul, my recently acquired S2. I've been going over it with a fine-toothed torque wrench, polishing and replacing as needed. Suddenly, to my horror, I notice that the knurled retaining nut that holds the odometer reset knob to the dash is missing! "Egads!", I scream and immediately rush to my local HD/Buell retailer to get a new one. But guess what? They inform me (with glee, I believe) that: "You gotta buy a whole new odometer reset assembly to get that nut."! "B-b-b-but, my reset knob works fine...", I stammer, "I don't need a new one.". "Too bad!", they shriek, and run laughing into the stockroom. Anyway, to make a long story even longer, does anybody know of a source for one of these nuts? I haven't found any at any of my other local retailers. The closest was Radio Shack with some panel nuts, but all were too small. Any help would be greatly appreciated (and The Nazgul has promised to stop sucking my soul out of me if I get it one!).

Try a hobby shop that deals in gas powered RC vehicles.

James:
If you are lucky enough to find a replacement retaining nut , please do share your source with us , I have not been able to find one ( very little effort spent looking ) . A word of advice ......... do not loctite the new nut on , there is nothing to grasp on the back side of the instrument panel / cable when you want to remove the cable again , the whole cable will turn , VERY difficult to remove !!! .

...noticed that loose retaining nut first time I gassed the S2...now, make sure it's still tight every time I fill the tank and reset the odo...lucky.

My 96 S1's nut vibrated off too. The stem is zip tied temporarily but I'm still looking for another one or suitable replacement. It's an oddball thread, 9/16" x 24 I think, that's not in yer everyday hardware store. I too went through all the toggle switches and indicator lights at Radio Shack to no avail.

FMJ, might you remember what they said the part was for on a big twin?

I bear glad tidings, all.Went by my dealer today(Vallejo Buell) and brought my spare parts to compare. We looked in the S-2 parts catalog and of course found the "Only comes as an assembly BS)--BUT some smart parts guy had written in a 4 digit #,so we checked and lo and behold--its a real live HD part. They had 6 in stock, at 3.00 and change.# on the bag was 7518.So if your local guys cannot(or will not) get you the part call Vallejo and ask for the Buell parts guys 707 643-1413.

Jim this is the difference between a spare parts interpreter and a good spare parts person. One will actually look at the parts when they are putting them on the shelves and the other looks it up on the computor and tells you that it does not exist. There is a good cartoon of a mechanic at the service desk pointing at the part on the shelf whilst the spare parts person looking at a computor screen tells him that it is not listed as being in stock and it has to be ordered.

FiremanJim, how inconsiderate of you not to buy an extra one and drop it off at my house in Pittsburg! I’m on the way to Rex’s.

Seriously, I have heard the parts guys at Vallejo are good on Buells, do we need to talk to any certain individual there?

Mine did the same on the '95 S2. I cured the problem with a nut from a keyence photo-eye sensor used here in my plant.

Thanks again to Fireman Jim! I went to my local dealer and got a couple of the nuts (not the ones who work there; the ones that fit my S2!). I also had the parts-dude add the number to the S2 catalog.

FMJ, mucho thanx for posting the pno 7518. Bartels' had 1 in stock, so the 96 S1 is stylin' now. You deserve the beverage of your choice on me the next time we meet, say Sonoma BRAG in May?

Btw, thread size is 9/16 x 20.

Sparky...think the S2 is giving you odo reset headaches...sometime talk to the owner of an RS/RSS 1200.
