Bubba; Years ago, I worked as a deckhand on a Towboat pushing barges up the Mississippi River. I've been to Iowa on a boat.

If by the "mother ship" you mean Harley Davidson they don't design Buells
They have a partnership & share engineers that work on both brands.

You are not the only person who doesn't understand or appreciate the genius of the Buell motor. Designed & built by HD.

Remember, their focus is investor satisfaction, not customer satisfaction
Crusty, I dont think truer words have ever been written here.

I'd wager that the Sportster line will sell more bikes than the Buell line in total. I could be wrong and hopefully am.

The Sporty has been HD's biggest selling lineup for years. They will sell twice as many 883 Sporties as all the Buells combined.

Sportsters have always outsold Buells, at over a 5 to 1 ratio at this moment (57,165 XL's to 9974 Buells in 2003).

Two models that DECREASED production in 2003 compared to 2002 were the VRSC and the Blast.

V-Rod vs XB Buells: 15,145 VRSC's were built in 2003, compared to 8,784 XB's.

Buell 2002 vs. 2003: Buell built 9,974 Bikes in 2003, down from 10,943 in 2002. The lower Blast production is the reason for the lower grand total, but twins produced were up by about 2,000 bikes compared to 2002.

Seeu -- we're about the same weight, and I'm a couple of inched taller than you (mostly inseam measurement . . . . .) the Lightening fits me just fine, thanks . . . .

as for what I might look like while riding it, I'll quote a comment I saw on a thumper board years ago (from a guy discussing his appearance on his SR 500 while riding the gap) . . . ." I may look like a monkee having carnal knowledge of a football, but I'll be outa sight so quickly you'll never notice!"

although I'll admit to checking out the "look" in store front windows and the like, I really don't care too much what others think of how I look on my bike (and I know you feel similarly -- just poking you in the shoulder a little) . . . .

one of the things I like about the Lightening is that, when looking straight ahead, I see absolutely nothing of the bike . . . .it's like I'm flying, and I dig the heck outa that!

the sport touring market, unfortunately, has a very small base -- vocal, knowledgeable in the extreme, but small. if it was my candy store, I'd consider getting out of that biz as well . . . .simply not enough sales for a small company like Buell to cater too -- the ROI simply isn't there

Jose, dont forget that 2002 was also an abbreviated selling year. Dealers had no bikes other than Blasts from Jan 02 until almost april of 02 because of the snafu holding up the XB's. If you were to take the other 3 qtrs of 2002 sales & compute a full year sales you would be around 9182 XBs for 2002.

Whats really interesting is the 4th qtr sales for both 2002 & 2003.

XB sales ending dec 31st 2002 2519 bikes
XB sales ending dec 31st 2003 2231 bikes

And as you pointed out & allowing this topic to come full circle..while V-rod sales are down, they are still selling at almost a 2-1 ratio compared to XB's.
