Hi guys, I was wondering if somebody could please tell me in real world riding what the capacity and tank range of a M-2 is. Also does the bike run hot on summer days when stuck in traffic? Thank much!!!

I usually average between 45-55mpg on my M2, but have gotten less than 40mph and better than 60mpg depending on speed, weather and wind, temps, road conditions or curviness, throttle happyness, and so forth. On the cross country trip I started looking for gas somewhere upwards of 175 miles from the last fillup and started getting worried around 225-250 miles. The tanks seem to hold between 4.5 gallons to a little over 5 gallons, at least for the non-narrow versions of the M2's.

Your profile doesn't list what year of M2 you're talking about or where in the world you live, so it's impossible to say what your summer temps are, or how heavy your local traffic is. If you are in a major metropolitan area where the temps can hit 100°F and traffic can crawl along at 1/4 mile an hour then yes it will run hot as will any bike. Around here in Milwaukee I just try to keep the RPM's up around 2800-3500 while in traffic, and if it gets to crawling on the freeway in the summer then I hit the side streets. This is more of an air cooled engine factor than it is a Buell factor. And I've seen water cooled bikes overheat their radiators in heavy traffic before.

Ha Teofan: You have to find out. And then you will find out that there is much more reserve in your tank than expected. Then you have two possibilities:
1. You have to make many tank stops
2.You will ride always with the tap on reserve, you will forget you did, and the range will be exactly three miles short from next gas station.
Now you can do something good: Shorten the little tube on inside of the tap, leaving less reserve. And now you have to find out again what your range will be before you go on reserve and how far you can come, riding on reserve.
Well, I don`t think you will ever succeed to ride a full thank dry within 125 miles (wide model) lazy boy.

Thanks for the replies. I looking in possible selling my Honda CBR954RR and getting a 2001 Buell. I'm getting too ballsy with my bike and need to "slow down" before getting in lots of trouble. I'n heavy traffic, I live in Connecticut, during the late summer the 954 will run at a water temp of 245 degrees. Oil temp I don't know. Thanks again for the help!

My '99M2 will go something like 200 miles. I fill up at the first stop after 125. Never run out yet and never had to use the reserve. See? EZ!

5 gallons (wide tank, which 01s have), and somewhere around 200 mikes full to dry (although our poet-philosopher MikeJ gave ya much more data) . . . .

yep, gets hot when stuck in traffic . . .re-jetting helps some, as does making sure yout timing is spot on (factory tolerances being what they are)

as for slowing down, the M2 will not keep up with a 954 (all else being equal), but, depending on the kinda roads you like to ride, I wouldn't count on much of a decrease in your average pace . . . it may, in fact, increase on fun roads

I ride year round, and mostly commute on my M2. In the winter, when I use the choke a lot more, my mileage drops to almost 40 MPG. In the summer, I average around 52 - 55 MPG. That's doing a lot of variable speed riding. The best mileage I ever got was 65 MPG. I usually hit reserve around 175 miles. I can go at least 30 miles on reserve. I've never run completely out of gas on my Buell, so I don't know exactly how far it will take me.

Just put 50 miles on one during a test ride and you'll decide. You'll either be hot or cold but there will probably be no indecision left after the ride.
