OK, got a little weirdness with our block heater tonight. First time used since last season, truck runs great with no overheating issues. 2005 Dodge Ram, cummins turbo diesel, factory block heater. I have an extension cord with a neon light in the end so I can tell the circuit is still hot. Neon works fine...until I plug it into the truck, then it goes out. Unplug, lights back up. GFI breaker on the garage doesn't trip. Toned out the wires on the truck, nothing shorts to ground except...well...the ground. Level 2 weirdness: when toning the wires with the hood up, I heard what sounded like boiling coming from the block around the heater element. Unplug, wait about 5 seconds, it goes away. Plug back in, wait 5, starts back up. Truck was driven 2 days ago, no issues, checked the radiator when I heard the noise and it's full to the brim, stone-cold (it's 12 degrees out). Center of the block seems a weird place to have an air pocket.... Posted it to the cumminsforum as well, but thought I'd see if any buellers also had experience with a late model Cummins |

It is OK, The block heater is supposed to make that noise as it is only heating the water up in the vicinity of the block heater, but it will eventually heat it all up. The light in the cord will probably come back on once the block heats up and not so many amps are being drawn. |

I actually pulled a few years as an IT engineer at the CMEP (Cummins Midrange Engine Plant) in Walesboro Indiana where those beauts are made! |
