http://hdforums.com/forum/sportster-models/300747- chopped-up-cam-cover.html
It appears the sportster gang has begun chopping the excess metal off their cam covers. Once that becomes common/popular will it
A - Lead the Moco to have a discussion on how to swipe this modding idea and sell'em like that?

Willie G - "I've seen many people cutting up our cam covers. Why don't we do that too?..... What? Erik who?..... Oh that Erik.... He did?... Years ago you say..... oh well then go raid his parts bin I feel a new dark custom coming on"

Or
B - Make said owners notice the similar parts already on those corner dwellers at the dealership.

Figures I typo the title...

I don't see any typos in the title!

The cam-cover cut-down is nothing new - people willing to do it have been doing so for quite some time.

Mine's in the garage right now awaiting final clean up. It's not that hard, the hardest part is the first initial cut.

I think I read somewhere that one of the reasons for the a meat on that cover was to reduce sounds from the valvetrain.

Looks like the new sportsters get the timing from the front of the engine now too.
They left a fake timing cover on the side.

I don't see the point in chopping that off. Okay, maybe it saved a pound or two in weight, but I don't see how that really matters unless he's building a race bike. All it does is expose the mess of hoses and wires hidden underneath. Removing the fake timing cover would have made more sense (though it would have been much trickier).

I don't see the point in chopping that off.

The point is it looks cool.

Ah. For some reason I thought there was some other purpose.

On a street bike, it just looks neat.

On a race bike, you save some weight, but mostly it goes you quick access to all those wires and oil lines mentioned before.

You'd really be surprised at how much weight it DOESN't save. After I cut a chunk off I was amazed at how light it was, the whole cam cover for that fact is a lot lighter than I had expected. I basically did it for aesthetic reasons, saw a couple I liked and since I had it off decided to cut it down. This is a naked bike after all and the exposed stuff just looks more mechanical and form over function to me.

Really, if you really want to cut some weight to improve performance, skip a few Big Macs and brews!

Thanks Ulywife for the correction.

It makes it appear less bulky I think. A touch more buell like. Every bit of bulk and weight trimming from an hd is an improvement.

If you clean up the oil pump and use stainless lines, it looks REAL good.
