Has anyone thought about a password protected "adult or Mature only" thread or two ? I would think something along those lines would make everyone happy. It would probably make the rest of the site easier to police as the potty mouths and nudie posters could go there and not foul the rest of the threads. |

It simply has no business here. Try finding me a discussion about exhaust pipes or oil on thehun or youporn and then we'll discuss it.
I'd like to see the chicks thread leave too. I've stopped being able to call up Badweb at work and have an accumulation of Buell stuff I've, as a result, been unable to respond to.

The "adult" section would STILL have to be policed. People will ALWAYS push it. Self-policing never works without supervision.
Personally, I don't care to be in a men's locker room with a lot of talking about what makes them all hot and horny. That scares me just a little bit. If YOU GUYS want to be with a bunch of horny men, it's not like that's a BAD thing (mis-quoting Seinfeld a bit) - some of us prefer NOT TO.
Ditto the hotties and bikes threads. If you all want to spend your time hanging around a bunch of horny men, feel free.
I know where to find horny men - I just DON'T go there. I don't care to find them HERE. |

Actually, I think you'll find lots of exhaust pipes & plenty of oil on those sites....just not the sort you find on here.  |

Court was doing the Buell internet thing darn near 15 years ago, I ain't stupid.
The cut and pasted chicks on bikes and the adult stuff has no business here.
It's simple really.
I'm a construction guy but you wouldn't like me sitting at your dinner table with your wife and kids using construction language. . . even if I sat in a special chair . . presumably the "cone of silence".
It's common sense and it's quickly becoming a rare commodity in America . . simple manners and the effecuation of the simple concept that there is a time and a place for everything.
Often folks, falling prey to group mentality, attempt to do stupid things citing the inability to single our a responsible party.
Badweb standards are above that and it's one of the reasons Badweb has outlasted many Buell websites and clubs.
I've got no dog in this fight but I've got a slew of Buell requests from broken throttle body shafts, Saddlebag cords, legal issues in Oz, bike buy backs, getting a customer painted Buell and 9 other e-mails I no longer dare open at work.
Waiting until after finals and the holidays is not a problem for me but I'd prefer to see Badweb standards maintained.

Hey it's fine with me, I'm only teasing.
I've not even looked at the bikes & birds thread, it's a pointless thing to my mind, but to each his own.
If I want to look at bikes I go look at bikes.
If ever I've a yen to look at a naked woman all I have to do is whip the duvet off when she's asleep, then run away before she starts throwing stuff.
Plus I'm more of a hands-on kind of guy, rather than a voyeur.

I agree with you guys 110%!
I was thinking that if I posted up a guy in a thong(not you Spidy) with his personality for all to gaze upon, the thread would be shut down in a New York minute. Ha Ha !
There used to be "Hot Dog stands" on the side of every road here. The gals all wore very little, the t-back being the uniform of choice. I kept telling Wes that if a guy ever decides to encroach on that line of business, they will all be shut down. The laws are stricter when dangly bits are exposed to the atmosphere... Sure enough a young man with a red speedo popped up(no pun intended) with his own hot dog(again, no pun) cart, right in front of God and everybody....YIKEs! The law couldn't have been changed quickly enough. There ended a Florida tradition... No T-backs in public ...period. So funny, how that works. |

But I guess we try to "give the people what they want" and still stay within the rules.

I had a great picture of my daughter on her first dirt bike ride... I was hoping to post it in the Girls on Bikes section... but it degraded before I could get there. Now I'm glad I didn't. |

Ok, this currently has my undivided attention. A lot of things here have really made me hackle a little.
Firstly (and please keep in mind that none of this is any way intended as a personal attack on any member)
Skinstains mentioned that if there were an 'adult' section, all the "potty mouths" and "nudie posters" could retreat there from the ladies on motorcycles thread. I believe however, that I have seen plenty of posts from many involved in this very discussion on that thread, myself included.
I don't feel that I have posted too many explicit, degrading, pornographic pics on there (although that blonde chick upside down on the x1 was a bit rough! ).
I would expect anything of that nature to be removed, as it has been for some in the past.
Perhaps if it is causing access dramas, we should be given a strict set of stipulations of what can and can't be posted. Perhaps the terms of use are not adequate in the case of picture material? What I want to know is, if the material has been given approval from the moderators, why does it present an access problem? In most cases, you would see nothing more than you would on a pin-up bikini calendar, given to the public to promote power tools. It would be a shame, in my opinion, to see it ditched altogether. I enjoy it.
I agree that an adult section is bringing an element that we don't want, in that it is not relevant. We ALL know where to look for that stuff.

Just hypothetically, as this is a word forum, let's take the words into account. Some of the discussion itself can get a lot worse than the pics, you just don't have a visual (thank goodness!).
As for it being more than just a 'boring ol' motorcycle discussion', I believe Badweb has already evolved past just a discussion. It is a variable array of expression of many very different individuals, each in their own form.
Whether sharing stories, making memories, asking for advice or just being social. Badweb has created it's own culture.Every culture contains aspects that some of the individuals are not entirely happy with. We are not a utopia, nor do the moderators attempt to be dictators, but every culture needs guidance. By eradicating a part of an existing culture, you only create a void of what was once there.

With regards to the written word, that to me is one of the hardest things to moderate.
Just try to read the BadWeB, the whole BadWeB. Just try reading my inbox once I've said something about a post, or moved an offending post out of public view. I hear more whining about how someone elses post was worse than to one I did something about.
There are 14 custodians.
There are 3547 individuals that have posted in the past 90 days.
Of those 14 custodians, none of us gets paid, none of us have the time to be everywhere, none of us wants to be everywhere.
I for one count on BadWeBbers a lot when it comes to offending posts, my inbox.
We all do our best to keep things nice and friendly, help BadWeB evolve, and the like.
At the moment there are things going on behind the scenes that y'all are bound to love, we just don't have the time to get things going as fast as we'd like.
We all appreciate the kind words as they come so less often that the less than kind words.
I do my best to try and still enjoy BadWeB like y'all do, it's hard sometimes. Sometimes I cringe at the thought of opening some threads. I'm real thankful for the Backfire Board, as I really hate the political rants and raves.

Before I found this place, my circle of friends could meet in a closet.
I have more friends now than I've had my whole life. Not just on line either, I've met some of the best people here, and even gotten to shake their hand and ride with them.
March Badness 1 had 7 Buellers hanging out and partying. Last year MB-V had well over 100, in the rain and it was one of the best ever. I have BadWeB and the 3%ers to thank for my new found social life. I wasn't antisocial, just nonsocial.

to what Glitch said in his reply, i'd add the following comments, specifically addressing your question i highlighted above:
there are several huge problems coming up with a set of all-encompassing rules to govern what is and isn't acceptable here on BadWeB.
first, in a million years we couldn't come up with a set of rules sophisticated enough to cover every possible scenario.
second, in that million years we'd never, ever end up with one set of rules that EVERYONE agreed on. we'd be lucky to come up with rules that even a simple majority totally agreed on.
and third, no one wants to take a million years trying to come up with those rules. us custodians have lives just like y'all do, and we spend a ton of time hanging out here as it is.
i don't say that looking for sympathy - we like our roles as custodians (mostly; the hate mail really sucks...), and enjoy the contributions we get to make to maintain decorum on the board, but it's amazing how much time you can spend looking after the place, and that's on a GOOD day.
it's been far easier - and it has worked really, really well - just to keep things simple.
kinda your basic honor system, as it were.
and when the weeds start getting up a little too high, out come the pruning shears.
anyway, it's all good, and this old dump is just about a month away from celebrating its 11th birthday, so we - the collective we - must be doing something right.

Yes, thanks for the efforts of all the custodians. This site is as much a part of my daily routine as, well, I really shouldn't mention that. Anyway, I've not yet been offended by any of the lady pictures, but I do get how some might be. Whenever guys get to talking about girls it can quickly devolve into a smut fest...we just can't help ourselves I guess. Please don't take away the free association as long as people agree not to post anything they know is likely pushing the limits in mixed company. I laugh so hard and get to know my fellow Badwebbers a little better via that thread.
This forum works so I've never cared to share any suggestions for how it might be better. I trust those nuts in charge for now. If they ever ask me for input or even to volunteer some time to help I'll do what I can. |

This kinda thread is something of an evergreen here -- I rememeber reading one like it on my first visit . . .
As an ex-moderator (an extremely short tour of duty), let me add my thanks to the others to the present moderators, custodians, and, my persnal fave appelation for these worthies, Regulators! They do yoemanlike duty with little backback (other than karmic).
With this many people crowded into this small a place, there are bound to be disagreement, and a little friction. Civilized people muddle through anyway, and try to remember to be nice while doing so.
The guidelines for this joint are not onerous at all, and, while the site may lack a feature or two that other places have, that lack, to my mind, at any rate, detract not at all from community, and the benefits that can be derived therefrom.
While I don't post often, I lurk pretty regularly -- this joint is, with obvious exceptions, one of the better ones available.
I'd still be a Regulator, if it weren't for religious and political threads -- unless you've had the gig, you have no idea how tiresome it is to explain, yet again, why you yanked a post -- or banned a member, again. The folks who perform this duty are far more patient, kind, and loving than I (duvet hanky panky notwithstanding) --
So, here's a another HUGE freaking thanks to those the patrol the dark and seedy street of badweb! Long may you run!
For the naysayers, hey, bandwidth is cheap -- start yer own joint (been done before, and successfully, too).

I had started writing a bit of an essay, but my computer just crashed and I lost it, maybe it was trying to tell me something, lol .
So...
BadWeb is a great forum, one of the most "civilised" I've ever seen, as well as informative, entertaining, welcoming of all and just generally a nice place to hang out. 11 years is a credit to all involved! Occasionally things do wander off on a tangent and there can be something a little tasteless, and there's the occasional bust-up where tempers get hot, but BadWeb doesn't seem to get stuck in the gutter, whereas I have seen other forums self-destruct from this sort of thing.
From this thread I have a better idea of what the moderators deal with. A sincere Thank You, and please keep up the good work!
Ferris - I can see what you mean. Even coming up with some simple guidelines to expand on the Terms of Use would involve a fair bit of work... Ok, the "honor" system works for me, and encouraging people to think a bit more sometimes.
I enjoy the "Ladies" thread, and I hope it stays. I know it has gone a little wayward at times, but the moderators have done a great job and it has generated a fair bit of discussion on what is appropriate. There have also been some fantastic pics on there, some classic stuff and pics of peoples friends/wives/girlfriends and even their kids, as well as the gorgeous pinups. I first learned of Leslie Porterfield through that thread too . Hopefully it will stay and there will be a bit of "self-regulation".
