My favorite thing about Buell? Eric...... I am buying a motorcycle that can trace its roots to Eric sitting on a bench, hemming and hawwing.....

An American living the dream..... and building a bike that works in the real world.

That is what I love the most.

The 1989-92 Honda GB500 is pure sex. Classic good styling at an affordable price (when originally available) Granted they were a copy of the Triumphs, but still nicely executed. I would put one in my garage.

Having just recently purchased a liter bike i think i can add some input.....i still have my buell....
I bought a new 08 gixxer....i was very impressed with the handling, brakes. and overall performance of the bike...is it a cookie cutter? yep....is it fun? yep....it has tons of low end power...it's just a totally different ride than any buell....plus it was a bargain @ 9200.00 bucks...

Probably a good comparision would be an old muscle car (buell) a new mucsle car (gixxer) thats as close as i can put it..

For me the motorcycle needs, what I call grage factor.I`ve had 2 Hondas,A 929 and a Superhawk. Both very capable ssport touring mount`s.When I found my old S2 rotting away I realized what was missing in the experence.I enjoy a certain amount of maintence and ogaling.Shear performance is a smaller part of the picture, for me.

The question posed is would the Jap bikes sell if not so freakin fast..

Yup! People buy for all kinda reasons, looks, speed, handling, something to learn on, gas mileage...if you build it... the masses will buy...

I am glad there is diversity in bikes but when H/D gets in your blood, nothing else seems to work.

I personally owned a single Honda 740-4 way back when... the only reason being an accident had my leg in a cast and my sportster couldn't be shifted, the Honda 750 shifted on the other side and I could ride with my cast leg on the highway bars.

Off came the cast, sold the Honda... haven't owned anything rice since... never will! But now a ride on a Ducati...hmmmm

Gixxers are sweet. Years of refinement, great engineering, a tiny bit more power year after year.

Yet, I have no lust & keep the Cyclone.

I had a Suzuki GS1100E. The aluminum hammer. Point & shoot & little this side of a Lambo or a Pro Stock on 4 wheels was close. The # of 2 wheel competition was tiny. But I sold my dream bike after a few years. The vibes of an IL4 didn't match my heart's, the speed was not as important as the G's.... So I bought a Yamaha 750 triple. Better vibes, shaft drive, comfort & fewer tickets from undue attention. You know...boring.

Then I saw the Cyclone in the Harley shop. A tiny Yellow wasp in a sea of Black & Chrome ocean liners. I sat. It fit. I bought without a test ride.

I've told this story before.... I was coming into Syracuse NY on Rt.690 and was passed by a red CBR-Argh, doing 100+. I waved, the race clad Honda rider didn't, I didn't mind, he was busy. My wrist twitched, I slapped it, & did not pursue. ( That's when I always get tickets ) A few miles later, on twisty, elevated roads I pass this red CBR-argh, rider hanging off, dragging a knee, profiling for all he's worth. I'm upright, mellow, waving one handed. He didn't, I didn't mind, he was busy. The expression of his eyes getting big was priceless as he hears the Sportster on ritalin rumble and the waving lazy guy passes with casual ease.....

I Know he's faster. I know his bike really does handle quite well. I know state of the art has passed the Cyclone by. It's still not for sale.

The Big four are very good at what they do and set THE STANDARDS for motorcycle performance. When you talk about going fast on a track with a bike you can look at any of the $12,999 liter bikes and know you got more bike then you will ever need. If you are not the fastest guy at the track chances are, it isn't the bike, it's you.

Next to that, every other bike you will hear stuff like "But it's air cooled", "But, it was designed for 'fill in the blank'", the list can go on.

Jap bikes sell because they are the best at what they set out to do. They compete in the TOP forms of racing and simply are the fastest. A salesman doesn't have to sell the style of bike based on bells and whistles, he just has to say it is the fastest bike on the street. Joe average biker/person doesn't want to hear about how if they learn how to properly ride they can take a Buell/BMW/Triumph/HD and blow the doors off any average rider. I truely learned that lesson on my first track day when the fastest guy in our beginner group was riding a V-Rod. He lapped me and my M2 every session along with a 600 Ninja and a Ducati

P.S. The hyabusa is a few ticks slower then the Kawasaki ZX10 based on the last top speed article I read.

i am confussed about this dependable thing. Most people I know just assume that the Japanese bikes are more reliable, as they do with cars. Most people (including me) don't know much about bikes when they buy the first one. Harley had some bad reliability years that people won't let go of. And many people just walk in and ask "wich one is the fastest" Or I want a gixxer or r6 like everybody else. I had never heard of Buell until 2 days before I got my first.
