Guys, the rebates out there at the dealerships are crazy these days. So I was thinking to get a new car or truck. I would like something with a class 3 hitch and at least 22mpg on the highway for economic motorcycle trailering... (of course less mpg with trailer...) I haven't found a crossover with a class 3 nor a SUV with >=22mpg... Anybody have a good suggestion? THANKS!

I have an '02 Trailblazer with a 4.2l IL6. They claim 260hp but I kind of wonder about that.

It will run 22-23mpg on the highway as long as you aren't fighting a headwind. Pulling a trailer you really have to baby it to get 16mpg. My overall mpg is 19.

I got a heck of a deal on it 4 yrs ago. It had 31k mi. and listed at almost 1/2 the original sticker price.

It is the LTZ model with just about all the goodies (no heated seats) you can get.

I would probably buy another because I don't pull a trailer enough to warrant a V8. Now if gas stays down the mpg may not be quite the issue it was earlier this year. I can't wait for a ride in Norice's Tahoe to see how it compares.

My 3/4 ton Dodge Ram with Cummins diesel, auto trans, 4x4, quad cab and 8' bed netted me 26mpg to and from Homecoming with the air on, and the S2 in the bed. Around town it routinely returns 22. Plus - 16k lb bumper-tow capacity : )

There is a smaller diesel coming out for the 1500 Chevys and GMCs, but it is coming out on the 2010 models.

If I am not mistaken, class 3 is more than most crossovers could handle, you would need to step up to a BOF pickup or SUV. Like stated before, a bare Silverado with work truck package might be your best bet. They are next to free, and the 5.3L should meet your needs fine : )

http://automobiles.honda.com/pilot/suv.aspx

2009 Honda Pilot.

Standard equipment like a Class III trailer hitch, heavy-duty radiator and fluid coolers means the Pilot comes ready with most of what you need for some serious hauling—up to 4,500 pounds (4WD)†.And the Touring model includes a trailer harness that provides electrical power to the trailer lights.

Of course, there are no rebates through Honda, which is good for resale and you have a nice car like ride and it looks dead sexy.

Don't forget to look at the Honda Ridgeline. Basically a Honda pilot 4 door pickup.

Bought a 2006 Durango. Drives great, power great, gas mileage crappy, fit and finish so so. Got a great deal. Has it been a good truck??? Well I've owned Imports since 93. This thing has been in for more piddly crap then all my Imports put together and thats not bullshipping. I've learned my lesson. In a couple years I'll be driving a toyota again. Sorry guys... I depend on my car to much to worry about it. I've got also a little Honda Element that I've owned since 04 new. Not one problem at all. Owned the Durango one year.... truck has been in 7 times and the 8th will be next Friday for a new gas tank. Nothing like filling up the tank and taking the gun out and getting sprayed in the face with gas. You can keep this crap.

I think the big three all have pretty good pickups currently. Im a mechanic for a livin and I wouldnt hesitate to buy any one of the big three. If I had to pick my favorite Id have a hard time. Id say pick which ever one apeals to your style.

Im not a big fan of crossovers. I buy things for long term. Beefing up a car chassis and calling it a truck is load of crap. Why bother when you can get the same milage and more durability out of an actual truck? A crossover is a new term for minivan, which in turn was a new term for stationwagon.

Where do the proceeds go?

They go to the Corporate HQ just like the American car companies (do you really think the workers reap the benefits? How much do the Big Three's CEO's earn anually)

(Side note; The Big Three also have to fund the unions)

The Japanese companies I would bet employ more American workers and infuse more money into the USA than any of the big three.

Bottom line is simple. I see them groveling for cash to stay afloat, yet they are not closing plants north and south of our borders to reopen them here…

The government didn’t bail out Tucker, Studebaker, Packard, or Desoto, to hell with them if they fail, someone will create a new company and it will be good for all of us…

Nick

Bads1, I wouldn't wish that Mercedes designed piece of junk Durango on anyone. Sorry they got you.

Nxtr, the Big 3 CEOs have been taking pay cuts over the last few years. They still earn 7 and 8 figure, but thats normal for a large company CEO. Oh and Rick Wagoner from GM is doing the $1 a year pay thing now.

GM alone employs more Americans than Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi combined.

They have been closing plants north and south of the border. They closed the Canadian Silverado plant and it made a huge uproar online about some BS how GM was screwing employees.

GM prefers to build in Canada because Canadian auto union isn't as huge of a leech as the UAW, and then Canada foots the health care bill.

It worked great for Chrysler in 1979, in fact they even paid it back 6 years early. They were doing fine till Mercedes came along and bought them out, sucked them dry of their resources, neglected the entire vehicle lineup and then spit them back out to the first company that was willing to buy it cheap.

Sorry this thread turned to crap too. : (

Froggy,

Not that its junk. Its been petty stuff. Nothing that has left me stranded.... yet. But I'm just not used to seeing a service center enough that I know the service writer and tech's by name. I only did tires, and brakes on my imports before I traded them in or sold them. I bought it just shy 12 grand of the sticker a little over a year ago. Now the economy took a dump and I'm not going to make out like I thought I was going to.

Are you looking to buy new or slightly used? You didn't say if you had to have two or four doors. I would have to have the four doors with three kids. I've really been looking at the Ridgeline. The looks are growing on me but the gas mileage isn't any better than a V8. Honda has a good reputation for reliability and that in bed trunk is a plus in my book.
A used car lot up the street has a F250 Outlaw that I wish they'd hurry up and sell because it is one good looking truck. My blacked out bike would look good in that blacked out truck.
