I wasn't there, but It's one date I would never forget. Only 5000 survivors left. Wish I could thank them all. Something small I do is anytime I see someone with a WW2 hat or something else that shows they're a vet I walk right up and shake their hand, and thank them. Just to let them know that we still remember what they did for us. It always puts a look of pride (much deseved)on their face. | ||

I rode a submarine, USS Buffalo, right past the memorial on our way out to sea. I was topside as I we went by. Yes, I had the chills as well. | ||

My mother-in-law grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, they saw the zeros flying over headed to pearl. Musta been real scary. | ||

It's been 25 years since I've been to Pearl Harbor........it's still just like yesterday,thinking of all those still down there,below deck, under the gun turrets. It touches your soul in no way that can be described in words. You just have to go there to feel it. | ||

There was a nice documentary on the Hitler Channel, I mean, History Channel, this morning about Pearl. There is a valley, located on military property, that the Japanese flew through on their way to bomb Pearl Harbor. There is a plaque located at the top of the range commemorating the event. The valley is now home to the Pacific Fleet's ammo depot. Does anyone know the name of this base? | ||

Pat and I made a trip last year to Honolulu to visit her brother. The first thing we did was visit the memorial. Something we'll never forget. Very somber experience. The oil leak really hits you hard. | ||

Thanks to all of our service personell who are serving to protect us, prayers and thanks to the Greatest Generation that went before us and paid that terrible price I saw that history channel piece on the Arizona and the attack on Pearl Harbor study WW2 the history is full of courage and scarifice of those men and women May God Bless America | ||

I got dispatched to a traffic crash today. I went there and determined that car 1 left the stop sign without looking right. Car 2 was approaching car 1 from the right and had no stop sign. Car 2 struck car 1. During my investigation, the driver of car 1 tells me he is heading to a meeting nearby and got lost. The meeting is for veterans. Seems the driver survived Pearl Harbor, was shot down 2 twice during WWII and earned the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. I shook his hand and thanked him for his service (though I don't think I could ever give thanks enough!!!!) I had the distinct pleasure of having this gentleman ride in my car so I could get him to his meeting just down the road. I went inside to make sure he found the right room where is his meeting was occuring. As the gentleman joined his meeting, a tear came to my eye as I was able to reflect that on this very day in 1941 this gentleman survived the unimaginable... God bless all our troops who provide the freedom we enjoyand so cherish!!!!!!!!!! P.S. He did not get a ticket. After all the hell he has been through, he definately deserved a break!!!! yeah, it was a nice gesture, as long as the police report clearly indicates who was at fault. The driver of car 2 is going to get screwed by the insurance company of the driver of car 1 if it doesn't. This just happened to me by the way. Someone else's inattention has cost me about a grand so far. | ||

This past June I had the honor of visiting the Arizona Memorial. My son was there with us wearing his dress whites. Truly humbling. The day after we arrived, my wife and I woke up real early due to time zone differences. We were staying at the Navy Lodge on Ford Island. We got up and went for a walk about 5:30AM or so. We wound up by the USS Oklahoma memorial by the entrance to the USS Missouri. Off to the left were the old officers quarters. We both walked over by them and kind of poked around the abandoned homes. Jan stayed in the area while I walked down a old path. After a short walk I came around a large bush and was on the shoreline as close to the Arizona as you can get on land. I could smell bunker fuel and see the petrolium swirls on the water. I stepped on to the shore and noticed that the sand was completely soaked with fuel. The smell was pretty strong. As I stood there I noticed a work boat pull up to the memorial. A detail disembarked and entered the main memorial structure. They were Navy personel all wearing their dress whites. Gloves and all. I could hear reveile being played across the harbor. They played a tape of the bugle call used to raise the flag. All members of the detail stood back and saluted. I had chills running through me. About that same time I realized I was standing in the exact spot that dying men crawled onto the shore. I wondered how many men breathed their last breath where I stood. I sat down and cried. I'm not doing a very good job describing it but the sense of history, loss was overwhelming. When I stood back up I noticed that the Honor Guard detail was still on the memorial. But now they were lowering the flag. They handed the flag to another detail, they folded it in the traditional triangle. While they were folding, the original detail was raising another flag. When it reached the top of the flag pole, both details snapped to attention and saluted the flag. This went on for some time, how long, I'm not sure as I felt I needed to get back to my wife and left. As I walked back I could feel a reverence about the ground I was walking on. It was the same feeling I get when I visit my Dads grave at the national cemetary only much stronger. Later in the week when we took the offical Arizona tour, I stopped in the gift shop. Off to the side of one of the doorways, I noticed a display with flags. I asked about them, I was told that these flags had been flown over the Arizona Memorial on the date printed on a slip on the back of the bag containing the flag. The lady then told me that anyone can request a flag for a specific date, they just need prior notice (4 weeks if I remember correctly). All purchasers of a flag get a certificate with the fly date (they are VERY nice certificates). Flags from that morning were not available as they were all special requests. I went back and checked the flags in the display. There were some from 9/11 of last year and from 12/7/07. The flag that I now proudly fly on my home was flown on December, 7 2007. The certificate hangs on the wall in my office at home. That morning set the the tone for the entire time we spent on Oahau. I'll never forget it. Brad | ||
