I know people mod many bikes the same with aftermarket parts and many do look the same. I see no problem with that as someone is selling their ideas for profit.
My question here is when someone does a custom mod how does that stand morally. Is it the sincerest form of flattery or is it a ripoff, even if the person isnt selling the idea?

I dont want to say what the mod is because I dont feel its relevant to the question and I dont want to get the question sidetracked. I will say its was done a few years ago and I dont know if the bike even exists anymore. I dont believe the owner of said bike is on the boards either.

The reason I ask is there is a custom mod that I found long ago that I have been dieing to do, but somehow I feel its not my idea and I have no right to do it.

Last time I checked there was no copyrights on mods. Sure its possible something is patented, but that only stops you from selling it, not making one for yourself.

No rules on customizing. You could always take their modification and modify it.

Let's say you wanted to have more comfy footpegs. You saw the Kuryakyn mini wings and thought they were cool, ( I do ) but wanted it a bit different or they were not available for sale. If it's just for you, or a buddy as a gift, not a thing you are going to sell, you're good.

If it's a touch you saw on someone elses bike, and you want to use the idea, you're good too, as long as it's not commercial sales, or you misrepresent it as your own.

"neat footpegs"..."thanks, I stole the idea from Kuryakyn" golden. Especially if you make a set out of Ti, and send me a sample that will fit my Cyclone.

imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Dont expect any protection on mods, unless you trademark, copywrite, pattent your parts, pieces and intellectual property.

half the fun of owning a buell is the insatiable urge to take a grinder to your bike, just to see what you can come up with.

I'm so good at making cool mods and stuff people can't help but copy them. I don't mind at all. Except that dog-gone Mechanico. He pissed me off good. Come to think of it, so did that dirty thieving Archamedees.

Yeah it was from a bed bath and beyond closet organizer basket. 3 bucks, available in translucent, orange, blue, red, grey and green. matched up nicely to the orange of the body color.
Sometimes the best mods are cheap and beer infused. Witness the Harley FLH turn biscuit timing cover. (bolts right on and available in orange, red, clear, or smoked)

When was the last time cityxslicker posted in a thread without posting at least one picture of his bike? I am having a hard time remembering.

Oh and the above muffler mod failed, the back pressure blew a hole right through it. Damn short @$$ ground clearance issues.
Next pipe on the way, maybe even a step by step pictorial of how it was chopped.

The bike will be at the Seattle IMS this year. I am excited to show it off. Pi$$ed as hell as that I have to have it CLEAN and spotless for the show.
Whats the f'n point of that?!? I will have to sneak in some 'Adventure Mud' and detail it out right. Once its passed the inspection and parked on the floor, it cant leave .... and thats when I will smear, cover coat and dallop thick ploppy Adventure mud on it. I never did play well by the rules. ; )
