Jeez, I read all this & I think, thank f*** for the Atlantic ocean.
I felt that way about two summers ago when the Muslim youth were lighting French cities on fire. Good luck with that going forward. |

Yeah, we get some civil unrest from time to time, but nothing very serious, we don't get people shooting each other in Toys are us though, which is my point, handgun ownership here is virtually nil with the consequent reduction in violent death per capita.
If you're really interested in the facts & figures look here, it's an old report from the late 90s but I don't reckon the figures will have changed significantly.

Are you old enough to remember the Riots in the 60's? I was in the 3rd grade or thereabouts. This country has had similar issues It passed.
Grump, are there any Murders in france that are commited by firearms? if the answer is yes then taking the guns from the populace may have "helped" but it did not solve the problem.
I would like to think that the shooting incedent in TAU is an isolated one in a situation where 2 individuals with violent tendancies met,
I suspect that perhaps the French would have had a stabbing instead, or they dont get as worked up over things like that.
it goes back to its all about "me"
think of the population and area of the US, VS the reports of various incedents.

I wish we could send a bunch of our own politicians "over the pond" so they can live in their fairy tale metrosexual world of no guns, no violence. This place doesnt exist.
What does exist are people who arent allowed to have the tools to protect themselves from criminals who dont care about law.
What an easy target for a group of people that want to burn your cities and change your rule of law. Maybe if you sing john lennons "Imagine" they will cease and desist.

Geez, I need to learn to stay out of these threads after lunch.

Personal responsibility and personal accountability will never go out of style, although at times they may be out-voted.
If anybody needs me I'll be in the garage trying to purge debris and clutter and trying to clear out space to use as a work shop. Winter parking regs are no fun when they take your workspace away.
....
ps, the garage storage thread is more fun, until they started talking about painting cement floors. Oh well, whatever makes one happy.

Ferris VB, an interesting article, but flawed in that the source for the writers data (interpol)explicitly states that due to the huge differences in data gathering methods, the figures can't be used for comparison.
It was more enlightening reading the comments to the article than the article itself.

Unfortunately, the more I look at "society" at large, the more I think we've bred it out of our species. In a day where you can slip on my sidewalk, on my property, before I get out of bed on a snowday, and sue me, because you didn't take proper precautions ("hm, it's icy, which I know makes things slippery; maybe I should be *careful*")...we've thrown accountability and personal responsibility right in the s**tter. Better yet, how about the domestic invaders who are suing homeowners for shooting them - WHEN THEY BROKE INTO THE HOUSE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Nobody owns up for themselves anymore, there's always someone else to blame - it's easier to blame someone else than take responsibility...and our legal system not only allows it, but encourages it. It's pathetic.
<sigh> I'm gonna head back out into *my* garage and hide. |

Why hate Wal-mart. It started as one store owned by one guy, Sam Walton. He did business properly and thats why wal-mart is so huge. An AMERICAN who did good business.
I guess if Buell gets to be as large as other brands you can start hating them too.
Wal-mart is not to blame for the miss hap. Blame the people that trampled the guy. Its called taking responsibility for your own actions. Something our parents should have taught us.
Also Wal-mart employees get paid better than some think. Even most cashiers get more than minimum wage. Not a tough job.
I used to bust my ar$e for minimum wage working construction and would have loved to get paid more to stand behind a counter.

I guess it's based on one's perception. I have never seen or heard of anyone that made minimum wage doing construction. Perhaps, the temp workers that pick up the trash and sweep the floors do but even the trade apprentices start at more than minimum wage.
As far as WalMart employees getting paid "better than some", we did a job inside of a working WalMart and the roaming maintenance/loss prevention officer was only making 7/hour with four kids to support. I can't even get myself out of bed and crawl to the toilet for that wage. |

Maybe I was working for the wrong folks but, it ticks me off when someone does next to nothing and expects better money.
You don't see Wal-mart asking for any of the $700 Billion either. Got to say I like them better just thinking about that fact.
Everyone wants something for nothing.
It wasn't that long ago 7 bucks an hour was good money at least it was were I'm from anyway. |

I have heard all the crying and whining I can stand about big corporations hurting the little man. WHAAA someones business does better than mine WHaaaaa. How dare they be successful... poor poor pitiful me. |

Kids are expensive, thats why I dont have them.
We all build our own hell. Personal responsibility is never popular, but damnit we need more of it. Its the fault of every jack@ss through the doors that morning in the rush looking for that 'bargain' on whateverthehell they bought. Hell we had a shooting at the Toys R Us here cuz they were arguing over a toy. wtf |

Unrelated, I can't wait to move somewhere not near a big city and see what that's like. I may even be able to donate all my winter riding gear to those in need (Arizona?). |
