I recently joined the Patriot Guard and was thinking about riding in a procession this weekend. The details in the itinerary for riders said: "Iron horses preferred, but all are welcome."

Does that mean Harleys only? American bikes only? I've got a H-D, but my Uly is far better suited to a long trip and cold weather.

Anyone ridden a Buell in a Patriot Guard escort? Any feedback from that experience? Is the fan noise after shutdown a nuisance or disruptive to the ceremony?

I've never heard of any problems with regards to Buell, or any other brand.
I know when the PG first started they used their pipes to drown out the protesters.
That's not so much a problem any longer, at least around here.
It's more a show of support.

Your fine.

I can't remember who it was, but last year at Homecoming a fellow Bueller on his Uly who is a Patriot Guard member.

If they don't like what you roll on then tell them to pound salt and go on your own ride.

"Iron horses preferred, but all are welcome."

I think they just prefer loud bikes. I've always thought that the idea of Patriot Guard is to make damn sure that the family does not hear any verbal protests that could make the grieving process any harder to bear.

I have not participated lately but I was more active a couple years ago. I'm confident by "Iron Horses" they mean any bike. To them it's either an "Iron Horse" or a "cage". There are a lot of PGR members with H-Ds. Also Gold Wing's. Some of the younger members ( usually ) ride metrics.

The PGR folks are generally fairly well-grounded. They come to pay tribute and to honor. They don't care what kind of bike you ride.

I always rode my Uly. I rode it into Arlington National Cemetery many times for graveside services. I also rode in several multi-county escorts. The Uly fan was never a problem. But one tip - if you think it will be a problem at your particular place, get yourself up near the front. That way, when you park and shut down, the fan won't be noticeable over the noise of the bikes that arrive there after you do.
Also, since many sttes have passed laws prohibiting protests at funerals, loud pipes are usually not needed and parking is often ( although not always)

Here's your answer:
The Angels (like most large Domestic V-Twin oriented MCs) allow Buells, so I'm certain the PG will have NO prob with same.
The PG appear a very sqaured away outfit...if they doubt your commitement, simply kick the siht out of the biggest one of these religious nutjob protesters at the next memorial and pull his bloody jacket to make yourself some fresh cutoffs out of.
I'm sure they'll accept you.

You are good 2 go.

My bolt and uly are never looked down on @ any pgr events. They usually start up good conversation.

No offense, but it is not about you our the type of bike you are on.

...still, though, stomping a religious nutjob who's protesting against honoring a fallen soldier is really the only way to go.
Just try it and share how it felt.

Yeah, I re-read the itinerary, and I rethought my question - duh...

"Iron horse" = bike. I think I read too much into the mythos. Funny, I own 2 Japanese bikes and 2 American bikes (guess which ones I ride and which ones sit on the curb) - a true multicultural bike owner - yet I read into things too much. The H-D culture is strong.

Frankly, I'm just quietly honored to do this kind of tribute.
