Is it too soon to get a jump on this since I didn't fare too well last/this year due to a variety of circumstances and excuses.

How about posting up some concrete exercise regimens, books, guides, web sites, and whatnot that folks are using. No need to enter any competition at this point, just guidelines and goals and workout plans that have worked for you in 2008 or that you plan to work with for 2009.

I'm thinking that if I get a jump on it before the holidays hit I might be able to have some momentum going by the time the new year hits.

This year I did manage to bicycle to work at least once (22 miles each way), and somehow managed to loose maybe 6-12 pounds (being sick helped a bit). My goal for 2009 is to finally shed a full 40 pounds, at least as far as weight loss goals go. Training goals are parallel and slightly differently motivated, one of which is to crank off a double-century on the bicycle next summer sometime (200 miles in one day, but I'll settle for a metric-double). I'd also like to be able to run a 5K non-stop if my knees will handle it, but loosing the tonnage might help in that regard so the running is a secondary goal.

Anybody else starting to think of their 2008-2009 transition plans and 2009 personal fitness and health goals already? Post them if you've got them. And the mods can float or stick this thread where-ever they see fit.

Thanks for the relinkage, that thread hides from me for some reason, and, yeah, I'm one of the pansies that dropped out early per the p90x wakeboard winter project thread. ; )

in this case that isn't a peepwall, that is a chimney I got stuck in. Don't ask what I was doing in a chimney. I'll go reconnect myself to the original and continuing thread. Thanks. I think.....

I'm in.

I've gone from 243# at Homecoming to 225#. I'm at a bit of a holding point now but have come up with some pretty effective methods.

I'd heading to 209# now and when I get there I'm going to take a close look at 190#.

For those of you in your 50's I am amazed at what loosing 20# has done.

I need to lose a couple pounds myself. I'm 220 and I'd like to see 200. My Blood pressure is up and I take meds for it now. I know I could go off of them if I lost this. The big problem I have right now is....planter fascitis. My arch in my foot dropped some and my one foot is killing me. I've been in to a Foot Doc 3 times now. If anyone has ever had this it really sucks and hurts. It keeping me from exercising at the moment. I'm on meds for it also plus a shot of quartazone.

Bads1- You've got it reversed- It's not so much that you could go off the BP meds if you dropped the weight, but, rather, that a good aerobic regimen would allow you to drop the meds immediately.

Remember what folks did befor meds?
stopped eating bad food, and exercised MUCH more.

I am a full chub 275lbs, 5-6, and a BMI that makes the Umpa Lumpas look fit.

5'11.5" x 165 pounds.I eat enuf groceries for two people.........maybe I have worms or somthing...........

It's interesting . . . my BP was not a problem. I've watched it for years since my Dad had problems as he got older and I wanted to protect my pilot's license.

But I started doing 5 miles a day (walk/run . . some combination thereof . . ) and making a few small changes and the BP dropped like a frigging rock.

I use Omron software now and log my mileage and BP daily.

Last time I had my BP checked(till today) was years ago.......always on the low end. Today at the dentist.....surprise, surprise...where did the squeeze bulb go? Some damned machine does all the work now.....and ......123 over 79. They say that's good.

I started at the end of August, eating right, and walking every day. I use America's Running Routes to measure my routes and a simple excel spread sheet to chart my progress. At first I wrote down everything I ate, it's amazing how eating had become habit. Writing it down made the snacking and garbage food so obvious and for me easier to identify and eliminate.

I started at 240 and am down to 225, I'm shooting for 200 and maybe even more!

Court's correct you'd be amazed what a difference 20 pounds makes at 54.

Uhhh.....you weigh yourself nekked in the morning like the rest of us do? That would be understandable.

I gotta get back to that thread to. I am hanging around 225 since the challenge with Oldog for Buelltoberfest(where I smoked his fat ass!)

I want to see 210 by the time I turn 52 in eight months. I quit my caffeine habit to(six to eight Cokes a day). I eat a whole lot more fruit than I ever have.

Tramp,

Really don't have it backwards at all. Mine are related to hypertension. The exercising might help but sure won't hurt. But to drop them that is not a good idea. My wife has been working with me to help me and I am getting my bp down but not without meds as of right now. I have changed my diet. Eating way more white meat and lots less on the red.

I know what your saying. Right now I'm not even take my shoes off to walk around the house. I have my tread mill just waiting to use it. Maybe you and I should get together for workout's.

Damn man I used to be a poster child as to how my blood and everything was. Turned 40 and the rug was pulled out from under me. I quit a 3 pack a day habit 6 years ago. Thats when I went from 165-220 in a blink. When I say a Blink I mean 1 year. Did I eat more??? A bit but not much more then I already did. My Metabolism slowed down after quiting. Anyway's I have to get it under control if I can.

Fish Oil may help with hypertension it doesn't for every one..

I take 4800mg a day...

Walking doesn't help me at all. I'm pretty much on my feet all day none stop and I walk my dogs daily..... that explains part of my foot problem. Right now my wife is the best thing in my corner right now. Going to the Doc tomorrow. Thanks for the advice. I know all the things you guys are telling me work for some and not for others. Hell they may all help me to some extent but right now I need to get my foot to work first so I can do some of the things I need to do.

Dr. Flash Gordon, ref. Medical Motorcycling author of Motorcycle Consumer News articles, has some pretty interesting concepts he used to lose 54 lbs. since last December. His theory is the Candy Diet and controlled hunger which is explained in the December 2008 issue.

Essentially he started eating less and less over time until it got down to eating a good breakfast with multi-vitamins and extra fiber, and fasting the rest of the day, but keeping the pangs of hunger down by sucking on a piece of hard candy every hour or so, followed by a handful of nuts and grapes at bedtime.

A piece of hard candy is about 20 calories and so, if sucking 10 of them equals 200 calories, even though they are mostly sugar, it's enough to keep him hungry and lose weight.

The important thing is he lost weight without increasing exercise. He modified his diet instead (medical fasting), likening the "pain of staying hungry" to athletes who get "pleasure from pain."

His buzzwords, "Hunger multiplied by time equals weight loss". This may not be for everybody, hey, but it's worth considering, eh?

P90X - I was skeptical at first but suddenly i realized its Not for the weak in heart nor someone who cant pass the physical fitness test.

weight watchers the first week you starve and after that you eat tons of vegetables and fruit. I am on the Flex plan and work out everyday. after the first week you notice you can't eat the same amount of food you used too. The thing I miss the most is a big thick grilled steak!
Working out, I do cardio on treadmill running, eliptical. I have a full size gym at work and get to work out for lunch. For 40 minutes everyday in the gym I do 10 minutes cardio, get warmed up then do strength training. Strength training working in muscle groups following Bill Pearl's book. big muscles first, smaller one after. Now I'm at Gold's at night after work. I love going to the gym! K
