Hello,

I just found the website for the graduate school program I want to do... University of Michigan Ann Arbor Environmental Science MS. Thing is, either I work here for three more years (to pay off the Buell and the Saturn) OR I go to graduate school. I think it will be financially impossible to do all three.

Trying to get my application in to U Michigan by January 5th to be able to be eligible for financial aide, teaching assistantships, etc.

Can anyone send me a donation to pay off my Buell? Anywhere from 0.01$ to 10K would be accepted... OR if you are a rich, single man in the Midwest (I just ended it with what's his face) please e-mail me your resume!!! Bwahahahahaha (that does not include you Spidey...).

Char,

Education is way over-rated! You can't ride a diploma!

Besides, (and I'm being kinda serious, now) if you're already working in your chosen field, will an MS degree really advance you professionally? Will it make a financial difference? More than the same amount of "OJT" than your current position would provide? (I don't claim to know the answer for your line of work, I'm just posing the question because in MY line, once you've got a job, another degree doesn't really get you anything you can put in your pocket, if you catch my drift...)

But, if you've got your heart set on going back to school, go for it--but sell the bike?? Nah...

Wow, I really must be getting old cause I TOTALLY agree with Bomber and RT !!

I do think a degree and education will get you in the door and would never discount it, but I believe after a certain amount of education it's what you do on the job and the opportunities the job has to offer that will be your best bet !!

There are many people in jobs who are not working to the potential of their education because the opportunity is not there and so they are over educated for what they are actually doing !!

Just my 2 cents worth !!

KEEP THE BIKE !!!!!!

I've been sitting on a Masters in Environmental Engineering for the last year and a half. I'm like a friggin' pedigree show dog. My problem is I have very little real world experience in the field in which I have a Masters degree. Add a tough job market(which is turning around, yeah) and I've got a pretty piece of paper. But I have more experience and a broader knowledge of things going on around me. Plus the ability to change into different things more readily.

Don't get me wrong, I will NEVER tell somebody that more education is a bad thing. Just remember that you do it for yourself and not for a bigger paycheck.(If you want that get a damn MBA. Having met you a few times Char, I think I can be safe in saying that you have a passion for things environmental. Do what you heart says and TRY not to look back. Just keep on going down the road.

It really boils down to the career path, some options are only open to advanced degree holders, no proper degree = no entry. Work experience and capability and knowledge of the subject is secondary to fitting the parameters defined by the powers that be. The school of hard knocks does not grant degrees, just callouses.

Whatever you decide Charlotte will be your best choice. There's always a new bike on the market to buy, who knows you might end up on the new XB1340RS. Wishes for good success whatever your decision.

Thats a hard decision to make Charlotte!!!

I always regret not getting more education (I am just getting older and more stupider by the day) and my wife (We had our first when we were 20yrs old) also put off her education so she could be with the kids but now we are better financially settled I am after her to go back and finsh her degree.

If you have to sell the bike and car to further your career, and if you think it will make you more marketable, then you have the answer. Bike and car will be replaceable with new and improved models in the long term.

One other thing "Never Regret any Decisions and Treat the Bad Ones as Learning Experiences"

I have also regretted not finishing college, but it's not really affected my career . . . . (although, these days, an undergrad degree is a minimum for darned near anything) . . .. .

at this point, finishing or extending my education would have no effect on my job, earning power, or timing of my receipt of a key to the executive washroom (they don't have any "Goop" in there anyways) . . .. . .

now, more education on the things that occupy my personal life, that's another story . . .. . I need some metalurgy, welding, stress analysis, and like that

education is a wonderful thing -- there is more to education, however, that degree programs from an institution leading to a degree, though . .. .

mirroring what others have said, follow your desires, figure out your priorities, and step out smartly

Oooohhhhh Bubba!!! Maybe you should ride on up here sometime again ??? As far as the degree or no degree... I have a great job at good pay, and I like being 'on the bottom of the totem pole'... I also really enjoy working for a Native American Tribe.

Jerry, If you want to re-locate, send me your resume, I am sure there is a Tribe somewhere up here that would just love to get their hands on you, you just have to know the right people or completely luck out, like I did.

I am considering either becoming a lawyer or working on policy issues for the USEPA, maybe both. The thing is both those things require more school... just the way it is... and it is a stupid system, but if you want to get ahead you gotta play the game.

Sometimes I still have no clue what I want to be when I grow up. Newfie, no regrets just relief.

Charlotte,
UW-Madison Law School.
Benefits:
In state tuition rate.
No Bar Exam if you graduate from a Wisconsin school and plan to practice within Wisconsin.
Almost commutable allowing you to almost keep your current job or work out a time-flex schedule.
You're already in the door there, leverage this to your advantage by showing them the advantage of working with you on this.
Your current credentials and background coupled with being a female (fact of life here folks so don't throw a snizzy fit) coupled with working for an Indian Nation will give you major exposure. (You could probably get into Northwestern with that profile if you work it right. Yes, I've also looked into it some.)

Negatives:
Law school is a competitive entry program.
Going part-time adds length to completion time.
Working while attending adds stress and lack of focus and lack of study time.

But you know all this already so I'll just shut up now. ;)

Actually, my grades suck from my undergraduate career (I was drunk for most of it)... only thing that saved me is my propensity to bullshit effusively... which is the main criteria for becoming a lawyer....

They would never accept me at UW Madison law school, although I did get accepted for an MS in Geology (way back when I was young).

I have drawn a conclusion though that I think will serve its purpose...

No one 'out there' is going to make me happy, so I might as well make myself happy... more toys, more money, staying single and traveling would make me happy... and then I could always adopt a child too... which would be the ultimate.

Going back to school is tough - not having the degrees necessary for the job you want, even tougher. Only you can answer that Char. It *does* sound like a good idea - except for the lawyer thing ;)

Life, like an ocean tide, ebbs and flows.
Sometimes you find good stuff washed up on the beach,
Sometimes not.
Sometimes the outgoing tide removes the bad stuff from the beach,
Sometimes not.
But with each tide a new opportunity arrives, then retreats,
and each outgoing tide is an opportunity in itself.
Don't give up on finding someone special,
just give up the worrying about it.
Life goes on, it ebbs and flows,
weigh anchor on an outgoing tide
and head to distant shores.
Or set anchor on a chosen beach head,
and see what the next tide brings in.
Either way, set your own course
and follow your own horizon,
because when the sun finally sets
and your eyelids close at the end of your life
the best thing to say is that you have no regrets.

Keep us posted, for here you have friends.

Sorry for the ramble, just a meandering mind.
Spent Thanksgiving on the Pacific coast,
watching the tides ebb and flow.

Go ahead & sell it. Go to school, graduate, get a kickass job paying big $$$$$ & then buy a whole damn fleet of bikes.

If its the bike holding you back from possibly realizing your dream & making a better life for yourself, then dump it. You can always buy another one later. I regret not continuing my schooling even further, & although I make some damn good money, I know that with the proper degree I could be making double what I presently do. Right now I am on the fence on a decision that has to be made by next month about returning to school. If its what you want Char, go for it. You have nothing to lose & everything to gain.
