Guess the old saying is still true.

If it looks too good to be true, then it probably is.

I'll say it again.

If you buy for less than Adorama sells if for you are knowingly, willing and foolishly BEGGING for trouble.

These guys in Brooklyn are good . . . very good and I encourage you to get on the well respected photo sites and read some of the horror stories.

I buy, as does Mike, LOTS of stuff and there is no item worse than cameras for playing shady games.

Court.. I definitely will not be buying from anyone but a known retailer that has been recommended by someone or that I have dealt with in the past.

Some of the best prices I have seen have been from BuyDig.com. I have made purchases from them before and have been very happy. If I don't find anyone that beats their prices, more than likely, I will be buying from them again.

Now it's just deciding which model to get.

Another piece of advice.

Once you get it, only shoot RAW files.

You can save so many pics that way, and do many more things to them. Period. =)

It's unfortunate you went with Noink, but either way, you shall enjoy the hobby. Just be preparred to have your wallet open. A lot.

OK, I am way late to the party on this thread... but I will state the obvious. Buy what you are comfortable with. Make sure it is within your budget and shoot, shoot, shoot....

I am still shooting on a 6.1mb, Nikon D50 with 17-70mm 2.8 as my all day carry.
This setup will not cost you more than $500.

And the results...

These were all taken at night, either through extended shutter or on the ground like Court mentioned.

hey damnut , been thinking bout buying another body and when you said "trying to decide between a d90 and a d300 " thought that was a big jump so just googled d300 and came up with that link .

glad you did your homework as i would have .

went to places i've actually bought from and seems the d300 body pretty much breaks your bank before you even look at lenses.

hope your kids aren't expecting much from santa this year ; )

In my best "Borat Voice"... "Very Niiiceee"

I think this thread should be the new Photo Associations game.....

Inmates submit photos and the Chop experts in the house "Get Busy wit it"

Hmmm... I will have to think about my next move.

Court:

Wanna thank you for dropping the name of the Adorama site.....being a displaced new yawka is a bit trying at times.

Wanting to find find fodder for my medium format relics in a place that never heard of street addresses takes some gettin' used to.

Thanks much,
Steve

Well I first want to say thanks to all that lent their advise, it was greatly appreciated!!

I finally made up my mind and bought a camera today. I ended up getting the Nikon D90 with the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX & 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens Kit.

I figure that this should be enough to keep me busy for a little while. I didn't know if I was going to get 1 decent lens or 2 OK lenses, as you can see I went with option B. I bought a few extras and still ended up staying under my budget for once.

I'll post up some pics once it comes in.

Thanks again all..........

Jim

Well done with the D90. It will be a perfect tool to start honing your skills with.

I just bought a "reconditioned" 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 VR on e-Bay and used if for the first time yesterday. It's likely one of the most recommended lenses for a darn good reason.

The VR works wonders and I capre'd the diem to shoot a couple night shots last night. Impressive stuff.

I'm liking the 200mm part of it too and if you guys are nice to me I'll head to Bryant Park, where all the models hang out to smoke during photo shoots (note: ALL models smoke, don't ask me why) in the spring during fashion week. Bryant Park is to high heels and stockings what Wall Street is to finance.

Court,
You can get than lens new from Amazon or Adorama (or a couple others) for less than 200.00 I was floored when I saw the price. mine came with the US 5 yr warranty. It's when you get into the 2.8 bracket that the wallet starts imploding.....

The VR works wonders when shooting my kids hockey games.

It's an amazing lens. Friend found a couple for real cheap on e-Bay and bought two just to see what they were. Turned out they were reconditioned but came with complete Nikon paperwork and they seem to work fine.

This was probably too much zoom but you get the idea. . . . . kids are so cute when they are playing.

Ok Mr Noob here has some more questions.

What are you guys using for a flash?

I was looking at the Nikon SB-600. Wondering what others use.

SB-800 and you'll discover a whole new world with a real flash. . . either the SB-600 or the SB-800 will work. I decided rather than do the "buy a 600 and then swap for the 800æ to just make the leap.

I've seen the new Nikon SB-900 and wouldn't suggest it yet. It's big, heavy and something like $500.

I made a bracket that mounts my video camera into the hot shoe of the SLR. Now can shoot two at once.

I had my Nikon D70 for almost 5 years, and I'm just now getting to where I know what all the buttons are for.
Unless you are a SERIOUS (i.e. pro or semi-pro) I would suggest the Nikon D40. I just bought one for my sister, and recently got to try it myself. For the money, IMHO, no-brainer.
