FB&D - so glad you are home. I know Ferris will get the best of care back on the mountain.

As Carlos said, we can be there in no time if you need us.

Hang in there Denise. Glad you've got him home. Hope he behaves himself and is a good patient. Looking forward to chasing the two of you on the RK soon, but not TOO soon. I'll probably give Jerry a call next weekend. Take care...

Denise - thanks for the updates... of course it's midnight your time so here's hoping that he's getting clonked on Vicodin or something to let him sleep.

I HOPE THAT YOU can get some sleep! Take care of yourself too!!

Sunny says that helping him in and out of his pants can be interesting (don't ask her how she knows!)

Hugs to the both of you from the both of us!

Jerry, we know you'll do just fine. Do what you're TOLD for a couple months now.

thx all.

big surgery it turned out, lots to fix that didn't show on MRI.

was doing fine until the nerve block wore off at 2:15 am, went away like flipping a switch.

took hours and hours to get it under control. morphine had as much effect as water.

reaaly tough, this part, and so disappointed they didn't have a med protocol in place in advance for this.

at one point the charge nurse argued with Denise whether i really needed more pain meds (they had thrown the book at me), this while i was contemplating asking for a leather belt to bite down on.

i spent Thursday on a weird, wild journey. not sure where i went, not sure how i got back, but i know for sure i don't wanna go again.

and Foley catheters? sucks hard, folks.

i'm pretty well drugged up, and as long as we stay on top of it i'm doing ok. sleeping sitting up is a little hard to get used to.

Denise needs your karma now. she's been with me every second, and it's taken it's toll. please keep her in your thoughts. she's a good woman and sure has helped with me getting to this point.

thx again to everyone for your kind words and humor - you have no idea how much it helps.

There are constant thoughts of comfort, healing and patience pointed your way from Boulder . . .both for the patient and lovely Nurse D.

Did you get the "adductor pillow" . . .? If I never get another Foley, it will be at least a lifetime too soon . . .'specially when they have to "re-Foley". But ahhh, the relief . . .

Get well soon, Wordsmith.

Ahhh, so under meds, the truth comes out.

Ferris was pushed!

Just kidding. : )

I had lasik and they gave me Valium first. Either the cute little receptionist behind the counter that handed out the Valium had a really good little side business going on where she was selling my Valium and gave me a tic-tac, or valium does *nothing* for me.

And after an appendix removal, I was amazed at how bad a 1" hole can hurt.

Hang tough Ferris! Stay encouraged Denise!

I totally understand your situation, although mine was no accident, but just as difficult.
I never would have made it without Ann, so I know how grateful you are to have such a wonderful girl at your side.
Ann and I both have both of y'all in our thoughts and prayers.
At the very least it, sounds as though the worst might be over.
Denise, hang in there girl!
Jerry, heal well and soon!

D has come down with the flu or something. she's totally wiped by whatever it is, on top of tending to me. please keep her in your thoughts.

Reep, do you have a little prayer you could send her way?

i'm ok, the meds are doing their job, but Denise is simply vaporized at this point.

this sucks.

There is some NASTY bug floating around on both ends of the country! Shel has had a bug for 48 hours so far that put her down for the count! Keeping my fingers crossed for her that it passes on soon...

I hope you get to feeling better D, cause if you don't, I'm going to have to fly over and play naughty nurse for the both of you and I'm pretty sure neither you or Jerry want to see that!

Hell, that just might be a good incentive to get better quicker. I'm packing my bags as I write!

You two get well soon! : )

Good grief!!
It's just not fair at all when the head nurse gets sick, especially when she can't just quit and be sick.
Jerry I hope you can dodge the sick stuff on top of what you have already. Coughing fits would be extreme.
But on the bright side, if Jerry gets to the point of being just more trouble than he's worth, there's that soft fresh dirt under the back porch. Should be easy digging.

You folks are on my list. Hang in there!

You are right Ed, my biggest fear is Jerry will get whatever I had - I'm much better today but sure felt like a truck hit me yesterday.

Home PT was out yesterday for the first session, she was pretty grim with telling Jerry he could not move the arm (shoulder) for 16 weeks. I'm betting he'll do much better than that though - if he could get a fully loaded Penske across the country, hauling my truck on a trailer behind, through the first/worst storm of the season (just about 2700 miles) in 2 days, 21 hours, I think he'll show these PT people what he is made of. : )
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone, we sure appreciate it.

16 weeks?!?!? Damn...I've learned to *walk* again in that length of time. He'll be fine.

I didn't have surgery, but tore my R cuff (with nerve damage) in my wreck. Even with using crutches and a walker early on, that arm is back to within 10 degrees of my good arm, and I'm swinging axes in the backyard, working with hand tools, working overhead / reaching for stuff in cabinets and on high shelves, and riding/driving. Haven't tried to draw the compound bow just yet...but that's more a strength issue at this point. That, and...I'm just skeered ; )

And - to help Kim's sanity - I can feed and clean up after myself again! : ) She's no longer married to an infant, lol.

Don't make him do the work or listen to the PT's...make him WANT to do it. There is a (very important) difference. It doesn't sound like it'll be an issue in your case, but I credit my drive (stubbornness, bullheadedness, whatever) with most of my recovery. I could have gotten angry or lazy or full of self-pity...but why bother. Use that energy instead, to heal.

He'll be back to normal (that term is totally subjective, of course lol) before you (we) know it : )

Hello all –

This is a form e-mail I'm sending to multiple recipients. Sorry about that, but I'm typing just with my left hand, and it's easier this way.

We're doing better today. Yesterday was really, really tough. On top of my situation, Denise was struck down by something – flu, perhaps - which hit her suddenly and hard. She's been with me every second of the way, getting very little sleep, and under a lot of stress, and yesterday she was truly the walking dead. Amazingly, several times I was taking care of her instead of vice-versa.

She's much better today, although not anywhere close to 100%. She's got a lot of energy back, more bounce to her step and light in her eyes, and we're both hoping that trend continues.

We're finally getting a handle on my medication regime - which is different than any that came before - so that my pain isn't a roller-coaster ride like it was for about the first 36 hours or so. The trick is to take as little as necessary, of course, to reduce the chance of constipation for one thing, but to stay on top of the timing to keep the pain spikes reasonable. I feel SO much better today. I fatigue real easy, but I bet even that diminishes very quickly in the coming days.

Sorry to be so gross, but...speaking of constipation, I had my first BM this morning since last Tuesday. Can't even begin to describe how much better I felt afterwards; simply amazing, and quite a stunning accomplishment and victory. Hope you don't mind me sharing in my joy.

And while we're on THAT subject, I had not one but two Foley catheters during my admission; one during the surgery, of course, and a second during my initial recovery period since I absolutely couldn't void, not even a drop, as desperately as I tried.

I wasn't around for the first Foley, but for the second one I had a ringside seat. Can't say I enjoyed the show.

Later, I was in real danger of having to have a THIRD Foley, but finally I was able to void on my own ("Please, I beg of you! I'll do ANYTHING you say! Oh, PUH-LEEZE!!"), and that was a nothing short of a miracle, too.

It's been a little touch-and-go since I got home, but mostly go and getting easier every time, and I hope to go the rest of my life without ever having to have a tube the size of the Space Needle threaded up my wazzoo!!

One of the medications I'm on is Lovenox, which I have to self-inject for ten days to thin my blood and reduce the chance of blood clots. Not sure which stings worse: the actual shot, or the %$#@!*& $300 co-pay! :-(

Life has been reduced to the basics for now, and time – as in "What time is it?" – just barely matters. Denise and I have relocated into the guest room. We've built a fort for me in the corner of the futon. I sleep sitting up, but the sitting position on the futon is more like a recliner than a regular chair. I've got my legs elevated, a bunch of pillows stacked just so between me and the wall, and a custom-made towel "nest" for my arm right up next to the armrest so my arm and shoulder are locked into a neutral position, enough so that I can disconnect the straps on my sling and give my neck and back a blessed reprieve from bearing the weight of my arm, without danger of my arm or shoulder moving while I sleep.

It's great working at home. No, I'm presently not doing any transcription, but Denise is; yet if I need anything she's right here to help. Today between the two of us I was able to wash my hair, take a sponge bath, shave, and even put on some deodorant (which brought about a resounding "Hooray!!!" from Denise, our cats, and our neighbors).

Denise also helped me with my PT this morning (I'm under doctor's orders to not move my arm or shoulder under my own power for the next four months – heavy sigh...), plus I took a short walk around the house this morning, fresh-brewed coffee in hand, and all and all it's been a Very Big Day here on the Blue Ridge.

Thanks for all your love and support; it means the world to us, and it really helps to know that y'all care.

Please, please, PLEASE keep Denise held tightly in your thoughts and prayers. She's not out of the woods yet, and needs your help as well as mine to guide her back safely.

Thank you.

Ride to lean,

while i've got my wits and manners in place (at least temporarily), congrats on your ongoing recovery. what i'm going thru/have gone thru is nothing compared to you (and our brother Seth/Raven), and i'm glad to hear you're both getting closer and closer to baseline.

best regards to you and your missus, thx for the advice and well-wishes, and our continued thoughts and prayers for your continued speedy recovery.

Best wishes for quick healing bro.

I almost fell on the deck one day, but then I remembered that I ride a Buell and could never tolerate the indignity. So I crashed instead and did Erik proud.

See, the moral to this story is "don't fall for anything, crash a Buell instead."

May God bless both of you. Hope to see you again soon.

Jerry and Denise,
Get well soon, and often ; )
Everyone here at the Hare household have you both in our thoughts and prayers.
We hope Denise continues to fight the sickness that hopefully is a bad cold and not the flu.
We also hope for your continued mending.
I know how important a healthy helper is when there's little you can do for yourself.
Also we pray for your continued success with your BMs.
Sometimes there's little better that a good shit!

The trick is to take as little as necessary

WRONG!!! Didn't you learn anything in the '60's? The trick is to take enough to render you blissfully unconscious without actually killing you!

Seriously, I hope both of you heal fast!
