He's a new rider, and has taken a real liking to the 81 KZ440 we've been training him on, so he wanted something similar. He plans on commuting the 8 miles to work when the weather is nice. Against my advice he sought out an old vintage UJM, and found a really nice one. I still think he could've saved up a few ducats and bought a more modern bike, but I think he scored a real clean classic.

1976 XS500 only 6000 miles, looks like it came off the showroom floor. This could be a killer cafe racer.

This is not his, but his looks even newer.

I runs great, handles, accelerates, and stops like a 1976 UJM should. It is surprisingly smooth (counterbalanced I think). I wish him the best. He is not without mechanical talent so maintenance and upkeep should be a breeze. I already got him thinking about a 12S when he decides to upgrade in a few years.

This one was surprisingly smooth. Perhaps your counterbalancers needed to be adjusted.

I've an archived foto of myself [I'm my favorite foto subject, dontcha know....] racing an XS500, the earlier root beer brown-with-white stripe version, at a mid-70s AFM Sears Point endurance event

It was a good moto & WAY better than that time's ill-conceived Yamaha 750 parallel twin
