I remember sitting on break at the Cycle Shop reading the latest edition of Battle2Win and an article about Blue Groove NW and a cat named Ferris and a club called PACBOG. I picked up the phone and called the contact info for the club and an hour later I was still on the phone with Ferris. When the call ended all I could think was I had to get his guy east to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. Who knew that it would all turn into this? We've traveled thousands of mile together since then and taken in some of the grandest views our nation has to offer including several trips up the Parkway. The show at the Blue Ridge Music Center pretty much sealed the deal for him. I have to add that if you fall in love with Blue Grass music there isn't too many places better to live than Floyd or near Floyd. Wayne Henderson is pretty close to the top of my "People I Gotta Meet" list. Ferris... JB2 |

that's high praise, Brad - thanks a million. i hope Carl is doing well, and that he gets a chance to read the piece above. :-) thx also, in advance, for the mystery music package - i'm sure it'll be worth the wait. JB2 mentioned Deborah Coleman earlier - are you familiar with her work? i was staying at his place in Indiana one time - maybe on the way home during the Out of Words ride? - and we were gonna run to the local hootch emporium and pick up some juice for the evening's festivities. before we jumped in his truck he grabbed a CD so we'd have some proper musical motivation for our journey. the artist he chose - with all due deliberation - was Deborah Coleman, and i was smitten the instant i heard her velvety voice, amazing guitar licks, and her soulful, driving rhythm, so much so that when we got home from the liquor store i really didn't want to climb out of his truck. which didn't turn out to be a problem, as JB2 simply plugged her disc into his home Bose player, jacked up the volume a couple of notches (BAM!!!), and our party continued unabated. over the years JB2 and i have had a very informal "music exchange" deal, wherein one or the other of us will mail the other a CD of music we think it outside of the other's normal "go-to" list musically, but one which we think will be well appreciated and received. in terms of my tastes in go-to music, it has almost seemed on several occasions that JB2 has set out to "save me from myself" musically, so far outside my tiny, simplistic norm have the selections been. this isn't exactly how Deborah Coleman came into my world. on the other hand, never in a zillion years would i have grabbed one of her CDs had i been crusing thru a music store with a $20 bill burning a hole in my pocket. that evening in Indy i was simply possessed by Ms. Coleman, and at my request we played her CD over and over, into the night. well, i still had several thousand miles of riding ahead of me to get home, and by the time i did there was my very own copy of her CD waiting in my mailbox, just in time for that year's Oktoberfast as it turned out. the folks who partied at the 'Dome with us that night couldn't quite grasp why her music grabbed me so (the beer on hand, in fact - several hundred dollars of the chewiest, dirtiest, eclecticest collection of microbrews Denise and i could lay our grubby little mitts on - might have been clouding my admittedly feeble descriptive abilities somewhat at this point...), but by gawd they got a full-throttle intro to Deborah Coleman that night, and the ThunderDome surely lived up to its name. anyway.......since the missive above was just now pecked out in real time (pretty much two-handed, no less), anyone playing along and wondering how my recovery is doing should have a smile on their face. as do i. :-) JB2, thx for the Parkway, for Deborah Coleman, and for the many other gifts you've given me over the years. "brotherhood" is not too strong of a word. :-) and Brad, thx for my guitar, your friendship, and whatever it is you're putting together for me. Can't. Hardly. Wait. :-) FB&D |
