O.K. - has anyone had GOOD luck adding a K&N, plus an aftermarket slip-on? I've heard of several slip-on's that have broken mounting brackets - due to vibration????

What about the re-map? How knowledgeable have dealers been, when, say, someone is looking for this type of help? I guess there exists a "race kit" or something like that?

I don't mind the breadbox, but I'd really like to get rid of the car muffler - I know the intake, fuel delivery, and exhaust are tuned to be a system. Runs real nice as is, I admit. Must be someone out there who really knows the scoop.

Thanks for any help.
Dennis

Dennis- I have a '99 S3T I bought last April. It had a Forcewinder, race ecm and V&H slip-on. The front muffler mount had not been upgraded. I had the front tab on the muffler break twice and the rear once. I finally upgraded the front mount (too late for the recall$$$) and put on a SuperTrapp slip-on. This also cured my low speed stumble that had been bugging me, (bugging me even after having the TPS reset, new plugs, new rings and a valve job). Now the bike runs much smoother and stronger and of course it is snowing and raining..... Anyway, there is a ton of info in the knowledge vault under the exhaust topic, go mining and dig up some gems.

I've got 42,000 kms on my V&H slip on. No cracks, but I do have the upgraded exhaust hanger. Runs fine, only hassle is repacking it every so often.

Hi Dennis, I have a '99 S3T and have tried a number of slip-ons(3 or 4). They all break depending on how hard you ride(I ride very hard and have 30,000 miles on my bike). You can reduce breakage by "babysitting" the system i.e. constantly watch the tightness and security of the system(after every other ride make sure everything is "snug". DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.) The best person to talk to about properly securing the slip-ons is Aaron Wilson at Nallin Performance. They(Nallin) are sponsers on this website or you can find them on the links page. Aaron can put together a small parts package that will help secure the slip-on and you will get a lot reliability out of the setup. I am now running a D&D full system and it is by far the toughest most reliable exhaust for the tube frame Buells. It is very expensive and very loud(but sounds killer!). D&D also makes a slip-on but its installation in not like the full system. Call Aaron at 303-833-4500. Ride safe. Frank.

Dennis,

I have a similar bike ('02 X1). Right after I bought it I put on a Forcewinder breather, race ECM and a Wileyco slip on pipe. 1 1/2 years later I am still happy with all three. No problems with breakage and bike runs fine. FWIW pipe sounds good but not LOUD.

Dennis,
I have a 99 S3. When I bought it,the bike had the Forcewinder and the V&H slip on. Cracked the front mount twice, until I got the upgraded mount, since then, no problems. I also purchased the race ecm, what a difference. Both the mount and race ecm were recommended by people on this board, and they were right on the money, which saved me some.

Dennis,
I run a SuperTrapp on my '99 S3. I didn't have any problems with the original for 10,000mi. until the shop didn't tighten the front bolt after a shock replacement. Needless to say it slowly came apart after that.
SuperTrapp gave me a free replacment, which was very considerate of them.
The thing I like best about the ST is that it is easily tuneable. You can make it quiet or loud in just a few minutes depending on what type of riding you are doing. I leave for work early in the morning so I keep mine quieter for regular riding. I like to put the open endcap on for weekend rides.
