I was wandering thru Home Depot looking for some stuff for assorted projects, and found in the paint section a Rust-Oleum reflective paint. Figured what the hey, I'll give it a shot.

Spritzed some on my floor jack in the garage (don't care a whit about how that looks) and the stuff WORKS. If I line my shadow up with the edge of where I painted, so the sun is lined up with me, this stuff really sparkles. It's a white/silver sparkle..but it's definitely noticable. Looks like a normal clearcoat in regular light.

I'm gonna try shooting the backside of some lenses to see if it shows through - main idea being the red "reflector" on my Uly top case. Also considering misting a coat on my helmet....

Pretty cool stuff, definitely good for this time of year (more dark, less light). In my book, visibility = friend : )

Wait, so it looks completely clear under normal circumstances correct? Basically, not noticeable at all, right?

Alright, alright...I'll dig out the camera : )

They advertise it as "mostly clear" - on a dark color, like my red floorjack, it looks like a kinda milky clearcoat. Very slight though, like a hamfisted painter (like me) put too heavy a coat of clear on. Light color, like a silver helmet or a white..uh...something I found in the corner of the garage? Invisible.

Hell, if I had my S1W down to its bare frame for some reason, I'd definitely give that frame a coat or 2 (white bike, white frame).

Here is a little experiment that I did with the stuff a couple of years ago when I was toying with the green color on my Uly. It's a reflective clear coat that I picked up at Michael's craft store. It has a matte textured feel to it since there are tiny pieces of reflective plastic in in. One picture is with flash and the other without:

No Flash:

Flash:

By the way, don't try to clear coat over it to get a smooth surface, it looses it's reflective capabilities. (Don't ask me how I know.

As requested:

Floor jack, no flash. Dusty...but it's a *jack*.

Floor jack, no flash. Dusty as hell...but it's just a jack.

Jack with flash. Yes, I sprayed some on the floor, too....

Jack with flash. Yes, got some on the floor, too...

Uly top box "light". Sprayed the reflective stuff on the INSIDE of the lens - took it off the box to paint. That way, it reflects red. Shot with a flash.

Uly top box "light" - reflective paint sprayed on the INSIDE of the lens (had to remove it from the box first).

Looks like one really has to be thorough with coats to get a full coverage so it doesn't look like reflective dirt. A painter used to shooting pearl or metal flake paints could probably lay down good coats.

Joe

Nice job on the hardbags. When I painted mine I kind of forgot to do the tailbag. I noticed that Rustoleum and Krylon also sell a rattle-can clear coat so I think I may repaint mine and try a couple coats of clear over the finished product.

Don - the color match is Testors Ford hugger orange for plastic models, covered with duplicolor engine heat high heat engine coating (I had a can sitting here, lol). It looks ok from a few feet...but then again, the bike's always dirty so who cares? : )
