that's just what we need to make bikes more expensive. look what they made car manufacturers do, I'd rather drive a death box that gets 100 mpg.

Pass. And they can also keep traction control, A/B/C throttle control settings and black box activated drive by wire.

IIHS has shown a pretty robust result for ABS,but I'd like to see the full stats- the sample size isn't that huge, given that the negative consequence they're measuring (fatal accidents) are pretty rare. The reduction in collision damage costs is probably a more reliable result, and is probably a more viable number because it would reflect a larger subsample of results.

This reminds me of a study the company I used to work for was involved in to test the effectiveness of ABS brakes back in rthe late 80s. The accident experience of about 10 semitractors with ABS brakes was compared with the same number without ABS brakes. But our safe drivers didn't get into a single accident where ABS would have made a difference, so the scientists had no stats to work with. They did report thought that the drivers unanamously liked the ABS.

I drove a '73 Freightliner with an experimental Kelsey Hayes ABS system for a while, and even when it was ten years old and had a million miles on it that early ABS system saved the butt of a clown in a Honda Civic that pulled out in front of me in the rain. Every new tractor and trailer sold in the U.S. and much of the world for the last decade has ABS, and as a result we don't see near as many jacknife accidents as we used to in the bad old days.

I would love to have ABS be an option on my bikes, as long as it can be turned off with a button.

Of course they do, since they're in the back pocket of the insurance agencies. This is just like them proclaiming that any cage that didn't have electronic skid protection couldn't get their highest rating. The result? Those of us without it get to pay higher insurance premiums because our vehicles "aren't as safe". What a big, steamy load. I fear drivers who rely on ESP more than I do a driver who doesn't need it. The same rings true with this ABS nonsense.

Buy, hold and keep older bikes. I have yet to see them try and force retro fit equip on cars (ie nobody is compelling the 78 Pinto to have airbags, ABS, or even a relocated gas tank!)

I've done many 60 mph hard stops with switchable ABS and without on late model BMW's. Modern ABS wins, hands down. It's amazing. Stomp and grab as hard as you can .... just remember to keeping looking up. It's a life saver. I'm an fairly experienced on/offroad rider and racer and I'll take ABS for the street.
