You may or may not know that Erik Buell is on the AMA Board of Directors. There is a short profile of Erik on page 40 of the November issue of American Motorcyclist Magazine.

His final thought in this article is "Get your friends to join and support the AMA. United, we can make motorcycling become what it should be in the United States."

My thought is supporting the AMA is the best way that we can make sure that we continue to enjoy the freedom of riding our Buells or any other motorcycle!

So if you are a member, as I have been for over 20 years, then great! If you aren't, here is the site you need to visit: http://www.amadirectlink.com/join/index.asp.

Joined in '70 because it was required to race "sanctioned" district flat track races.

IMO since about '72 all it benefits is the Wing riders on the east coast.

Go ahead bash me.

Don't even get me started on the mOTORCYCLE iNDUSTRY cOUNCIL.

Mickey Mouse Club is what "off the road racers" called it back then.

Same here, joined for a dual sport ride up in Zanesville. I am very impressed with how well the organization is run now. I even volunteered to help at Mid Ohio vintage days for their museum fund raiser.

They are running a good show these days.

Have been a member for 13 yrs. now. We need someone to stand up for us. It really annoys me how the libs have been taking away the off-road riding areas like they have.

Here's what my wife came up with to display the pins.

I am relieved that AMA is now in the business of protecting rights, lobbying/educating and doing that which they are GOOD at doing.

They were decades overdue at getting out of the racing promotion business - especially as a non-profit!

Kinda like AAA getting out of Indy and oval tracks when USAC took over the racing of Champ cars, sprints and midgets.

Life Member here -- number 219617 -- while I've got a a number of bones to pick with teh AMA, they're the only game in town - -the DO seem to be serious about re-tooling to do a better job for riders, which is hopeful --

it's a shame so many riders are NOT members, and seem to be doing their level best to make things tough for us, but we need a voice -- imagine if every rier was a member -- NRA and AARP (two very effective lobbying organizations) would pale to insignificance

Yeah, kind of like the squid my wife saw yesterday. Rode a wheelie all the way up a ramp behind her, passed her real quick and then rode a wheelie all the way back down the next one.

I'm sure when mom and pop driver sees that they equate all motorcyclist as the same. Pretty much destroys all the hard work we do trying to get respected.

What does the AMA do to benefit motorcyclists? Why do I want to join?

Not a smart ass question, just curious.

Andrejs2112: Along with having sanctioned and orderly races, hillclimbs, and basically all types of two wheeled competition, the AMA fights for justice when the laws are either too forgiving in auto vs motorcycle crashes, wrongful persocution and prosecution from stupid or otherwise inane laws against bikers. Legislature that is mandated against us (bikers) such as the helmet laws. ( I would never ride without one but dont think it should be a law when its a choice to not wear it) They fight the health insurance companies when they tell you they will not cover you because you ride. Basically keep them accountable and make them know there are all types that ride. The AMA has lobbyists that are constantly watching congress and the senate to insure we are not persocuted for being a biker. They have in the state of Ohio, gotten with the BMV to make sure the up and coming drivers are aware of us and how to watch for bikers in general. Left turns, blind spots etc. The AMA has an absolutely wonderful museum in Ohio that has some of the most incredible motorcycles in the world. I could go on but would direct you to just visit their website and read for yourself why you should join and be a member. Anybody have any other reasons he should join?

That's funny as my motorcycle insurance didn't cover my hospital bills when I got into my accident. I had FULL coverage with the highest medical coverage as well.

I had to go through my work insurance to have most of them paid.

Needless to say I now have the very basic insurance on my bike.

Been a member for 20 years, not 100% behind all their positions but I figure it's better than having no representation at all.

I had a cruddy time with medical bills being covered I had to prove who was responsible in a no fault I had to provide dec pages for every ins I had then they pulled the doctor was not in the network but the hospital was crap then there was the we didn't get any papers on this claim I had to prove they already paid some of the claim this all took 5 months to get them to pay and I still have to lay out about 375 to clear the bills so the medical coverage thing aint going so well thats for sure
