Well... not just for the ladies, since all of the guys here probably know at least ONE lady.

I want to bring something to your attention... for two reasons.
One. October is National breast cancer awareness month. When was the last time you, or your loved one had a breast exam? If it has been over 1 year, it is time to schedule that TODAY. DOIT... DOIT.

Two. The Tyson family got a backhand from life this week. Yesterday I learned that both my Mom, and my Sister have invasive breast cancer.
My Mom's cancer is somewhat advanced, as she has neglected to get her exams for the last 5 years. She now has cancer in both breasts, tumors the size of golf balls, and is headed straight to chemo starting wednesday of next week. She says the doctors are telling her that she should be fine. But I have to wonder if she is just being a Mom and trying to protect me from some worse prognosis.
She has been aware of lumps in her breasts for the last 4 years.

My Sister, on the other hand, is very adamant about her breast exams, and VERY vocal about breast cancer awareness. She takes part in the 3 day walk in Atlanta every year, and raises a lot of money for the cause.
Her cancer was found early, and her doctor is going to discuss treatment plans with her next week.

So, ladies, get out there and squeeze a BOOB! Or heck, teach your Husband, Boyfriend, or Girlfriend what to feel for, and let THEM squeeze yer Boobies! But for God's sake... get checked.. squeeze them good, and squeeze them often. (this is not a joke... just me trying to put some levity on this situation.)

Thank you.

Russ, sorry to hear about Mom and Sis.
Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they fight the good fight.
We too have been touched by breast cancer, Ann's good friend had to loose one of her breasts during her fight.

Russ, sorry to hear. My step-mother just had a stage 1 tumor removed a few months ago. The cancer itself seemed to be taken care of with not much fuss due to finding it early, but the meds she was on afterwards really wreeked havock on her and she's still dealing those repercussions.

I wish both of these women in your life a quick recovery. Not knowing is the worst thing for this kind of stuff, so it's good that they both do now and are poised to deal with it.

On an upnote, cancer runs pretty strong in both sides of the girlfreind's family, so I'll run this by her and see if we can get a daily exam regimine going...you know...for her health...

Mark,
There is a breast cancer gene that she can be tested for.
Knowing the result of a test like that could be worth tons of prevention.

Christina Applegate, if you remember, tested positive for the gene, and had a double mastectomy before she even had any disease. Some thought she was crazy... but if you test positive for the gene, it is almost a guarantee that you will end up with breast cancer.. so she decided to get rid of the possibility. I can't say that I would do any different (If I were a woman, of course.)

Her family's cancer history is fairly complicated. MANY relatives have developed it and passed away, so at first glance she's high risk for it.

On the other hand, there aren't any (or many) repeats - brains, spinal cord, lung, liver, etc. - not all the same kind, so her current doctor says there's no real pattern and therefore not high risk.

I had no idea there was a breast cancer gene, or that they were able to detect it. As fas as I know, breast cancer has not come up in her family, but this is definetly worth mentioning to her.

I made a plan today.. but could use a little input from others.

I am going to my favorite Barber today (Rooster's), and was planning on talking to the owner about a fund raiser for the Komen foundation.

My idea is to see if she would be willing to donate the price of shaving your head, maybe over a specified weekend, or some timeframe. And making a big event out of it.
Maybe call it "Shave your head for Bewbies", or "Go bald for Bewbies".. or something.
My idea is:
Shave your head: 100% of the price goes to komen.org
Regular hair cut or whatever: ??%

I don't know if any of you guys have ever been to a Rooster's Grooming or not... but the treatment there is AA+. The face massage you get with a shave, and the neck massage you get with a hair cut is second only to a happy ending (which they do NOT offer).
Hot towels, great hair cuts and shaves, and great looking ladies providing all of this service =

What do you guys think?

My friend Cody is only 23 and he is fighting bone cancer. He was my turret gunner all through Iraq, and he could finish a PT run and get done with a smoke before I would even cross the finish line. Now he is sick, bald, and looking at not making it to 30. Anything anybody can do to fight cancer is fine by me. Set up a way to donate online and I am in for the cost of a haircut even though I will just have to do it myself here in Wisconsin.

Rayson, sorry to hear about your troubles. Sounds like you're a good guy and will be there for both of them.
And to do my part I will offer my services and free breast exams! (sorry, had to) And as far as Ms. Applegate, I think she's very brave to come out and tell the world when her looks are so important to her job. She could have taken the easy way out and hidden it. But instead she is out talking and raising awarness. good for her!

Russ - so sorry to hear about your Mom and sister. We will keep them both in our prayers.

Thanks for reminding all of us ladies to do monthly self-exams. I'm sure lots of hubbies are reading this thread to their wives tonight and offering their services!

Kristi, it is the least I could do.

Thanks for your prayers.

In reference to my earlier post about the fund raiser;
The owner of Rooster's said she is in, donating a portion of the cost of a head shave (she still has bills to pay, I completely understand). I also got an email back from the local morning show DJ at our rock station Rocket95.1, and he is in too!
I think I just multiplied my workload by about 1000... I just hope it is successful.

My mom's has had breast and skin cancer previously. She now has stage IV cancer...left lung, left lymph nodes, and a tumor in her neck removed (which the family cat discovered initially). She's been hanging in there for over a year and is still going strong which I hear is quite an accomplishment.

Yeah, they're much too young to be trying for their eagle badge.

My grandmother had breast cancer, it'll be eight years on the 26th. Cancer is a weird disease. You couldn't have asked a person to take better care of themselves and exercise and live right but she still contracted it and passed away. My grandfather on the other side of my family has smoked non-filtered cigarettes since he was 13 and drank enough alcohol to float a fleet of boats and is still kicking (just gave up his spree a couple of years ago).

Ratyson - I'm with ya! My mom just found out. She had a lump tested that was confirmed cancerous. Stage two, about 1 cm. They're hoping it's early enough to only require radiation, not chemo. She goes in soon for an MRI biopsy to confirm a couple of other spots that showed up on an MRI. Surgery shortly thereafter to remove said lump. Doctors are hopeful - 90th percentile for success. I've got my fingers crossed. Luckily my mom is on the ball for getting checked.

Best wishes to you and your fam!!!

I work in a Radiology department with 23 women, every Wed in October is Pink Day. Yes, I wear a pink scrubs or T-shirt or anything that I have that has a ink ribbon on it to support the people that have been through this awful dz. We have a local organization call "Pink Ribbon Angels" that offer all kinds of support, from financial to transportation to wigs to scarves to head wear, anything that is needed they will try to help out. Their big fund raiser every is called "Curl for a Cure" Which is the sport of curling at the local club. So if you have a local organization like this support them the best you can.

It's not JUST breast cancer!!!

Colo-rectal cancers kill MORE women than breast cancer. It just doesn't make as pretty a stamp for the Postal service.

I'm not being funny here - I don't understand the socializing of one particular disease over another - especially one that doesn't kill as many as another.

YES - by all means, get yourself tested for ALL forms of cancer - and NEVER IGNORE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS. Regular physicals are your friend... and in the case of breast exams, self-examination CAN make a big difference.

Gentlemen, you must see "Doctor Finger" annually when you get on in years...

(don't ask me how I know)

Update... and not such a good one.

Mom went through her chemo like a champ.. then her double mastectomy back in March, followed up by about 6 weeks of radiation.
She came out of that with flying colors.
She has been doing really well and gaining strength. Heck, 6 weeks ago my Wife, 2 year old Daughter, and myself all came up and we went to Dolly Wood and had a blast.

Mom suprised all of us by keeping up with Shelby (my daughter) all weekend.

Two weeks ago she started feeling dizzy, and her speech starting slurring.

It seems that the cancer has come back with a vengance. She has more tumors in her brain that you can count, along with a load of them in her lungs and liver.

She started today on the first of 16 rounds of radiation on her brain to hopefully get rid of the tumors.. then after that she is going to go through more chemo.. depending.

We definitely need some prayers for this one. It seems insurmountable to me right now... but only the Lord can determine what happens next.
If he wants her home... she will come home.
