Nah, but less than 2 hours north. Ship the tires to the house and ride the bike up

Two questions...

Mileage per tank... I've read 110-140 miles and it's dry?!?! That's a bummer! I'm used to 180! I know for a fact I'd need to carry a gas can out west, even down south (smokey mountains) has me a bit worried. Any thoughts on this? Someone want to ease my worries?

Also, Charging system... How strong is this system? I know high beams and fog lights at the same time was about the limit on the Tuber. Running the heated vest at the same time pushed my voltage below 12 even cruising. Anyone know how much stronger the XB's systems are?

I'm usually at 110 when the light comes on with moderate to aggressive acceleration and cruising on the interstate/commuting. I get more when it's straight interstate miles like to March Badness. I've had it come on as early at 80 miles with spirited riding on some backroads in W.Va. Unsure of how far reserve will get ya.

I've got some DOM tubing that I'm working on making a rack similar to the Ventura system that will allow me to mount a Tourtank on the side facing me and a trunk above the rear tire for added fuel capacity/a backrest.

Should have bought a Uly..

The Search function has taught me no more than 30 miles on reserve. (eep!)

Make two, I'll pay!

Mike -

Keep in mind that mine is a 2007 so it holds a little more gas, but my reserve doesn't typically come on until about 150 miles.

As far as reserve goes, I was able to ride from T.W.O. to the Hudson Valley Crew cabin and back with the reserve light on during MBV. I was going VERY easy, but that's the most I've pushed it.

How much does the '05 hold? (and how much does your '07 hold? What'd they change?)

The '05 has the pass-through in the frame from teh left-side scoop into the air box. In '06 they did away with this, so the space that was once for used as an intake tract became extra tank space. I think it amounts to .8 gallons, but my memory could be off.

I'll put it together, just pay for materials. I will be tacking it and having a professional weld it as my welds look like boogers. It won't be for a couple months. I have the mounting plates done where they will be sandwiched between the passenger pegs and the subframe. I plan on using the turn signal holes in the rear a a support too, but you'd probably need to get a non-chopped cheesegrater to make it work. Mine's gonna have side mounts for Givi bags and turn signal relocation too...

Hrm, maybe mine'll have to be different from yours. I definately don't want a cheesegrater.
I basically want exactly the Ventura rack, with a grab handle most of the time, and swap in the tall rack for the touring.

I just cannot and will not spend $400 for the thing.

That's basically it, but with more support, studier construction and the mounting for hard bags.

I plan on keeping the Ventura rack off my Cyclone and seeing what it would take to mount it to the XB. Even if I have someone make completely new mounting brackets, if the Ventura rack grab handle and tall rack I have now bolt into it, it would be perfect for me. Maybe I could take it up to your place sometime this winter and you could help me fab it up since I have ZERO metal working experience, and no way to get my hands on welders 'n' such.

This is like a puzzle... Must get a large (full) tank bag, leather race pants and gloves, and a large spine protector into a carry-on. That carry-on has to fold up small enough to fit into the tank bag for a ride back. All this is on top of my Helmet as a 'personal item' carry-on, and I'll be wearing the race boots, jeans, long sleeve T-shirt, short sleeve T-shirt, heated vest, and the Leather Jacket.

It would be so much easier to just wear the full riding suit! But... the hours of flying and sitting in an airport would be.... awkward. Plus getting through security could be a trick in itself.

Any idea's that could help me out here?

Just tell me to wear the riding gear on the plane.

Thought about that, but I'd be cutting it VERY close, shipping it tomorrow, to arrive in GA by Friday. Hmmmm, That would've been the 'smart' thing to do a week ago. I've got it setup now so it'll work... but if they're very strict about the carry on size I'm screwed.

Hmmm

I agree... You already bought a bike from the guy, why not? Or, ship it to a known Bueller in the area... another option would be a Tourtech trunk bag, should fit everything but the helmet. It's like $60 at ironpony

I have the trunk bag, but I didn't want to deal with it. It's the riding gear that's big and bulky. So once I'm actually riding, the tank bag is plenty of storage... no need for the tail bag. It's the flight down that I have a lot of gear to pack.

Sounds like it is time for new gear. Just leave the old stuff at home, get on the bike, ride to bike store nearby, buy new gear! Problem solved. Anything else I can help you with?

Is there a 'legal' way to transport (ride) the bike home? I am planning on just pulling the plate off my cyclone and throwing it on the XB, but I know that's not 'legal'.

I bought insurance on the thing today (got a great rate through Progressive! 22 year old male with 2 speeding tickets, and it was still under $200 per year for good coverage, although no collision or comprehensive)
So I have the insurance card, and I'll have the title on hand. I just don't know if there's anything I should do about the license plate.

I plan on speeding a bit in the hills, so I want to be as prepared as possible if I do run into the law.

Most ,if not all states give you at least 30 days to register a new or new to you vehicle.

If you have the receipt, title, insurance card, drivers license, proving you are on a point between address of sale and your home, within a reasonable time period(like less than 10 days), there should be no problem at all. I have done it several times over the years.

Having the new insurance card goes a long way to showing intent to register when you get home.

I've been driving daily for the past week with cardboard squares in place of license plates. I just wrote "In Transit - xx-xx-xx" (xx's being the date the bill of sale was signed)

I've had zero attention so far from LEO and I pass one daily coming home from work through a school zone. Just keep proof of the date you purchased the vehicle, like the bill of sale and/or title.. and you have 30 days to get everything legal.

Copied from the Bueltoberfest thread:

I MADE IT HOME!!!

I honestly can't believe the tire made it. I spent all day yesterday convincing myself that it would get me home... then about exactly halfway home I started having a mini panic attack thinking the thing probably wouldn't make it. Well, to my absolute surprise, every gas stop the thing STILL had rubber around the center!

Now in my driveway is the first time it's beginning to show cords, there's still rubber, but you can see the pattern. That's well over 1000 miles AFTER it past the wear bars!

Pictures later.

(Oh, and I realized why I wasn't really 'feelin' the bike in the twisties... Not only was it a brand new bike to me... but it's got a terrible Dunflop D208 on the front that squared off and dryrotted... and the EXTREMELY squared off 190 wide michalin on the rear)

I can't wait to get some decent rubber on there!

The front brake pulses BAD, but it's still got OEM pads, so some Lyndall Golds will be on order this afternoon, and hopefully that'll take care of it.

Some quick notes from my first lengthy ride on an XB:

The accelleration from a stop on this thing is ferocious!

The ergo's with the 1" bar risers is awesome. I'm torn between selling them or keeping them.

The select seat kept my rear quite comfy on my 500 mile ride yesterday. Like all seats, I had to stand up and shake it up a bit every once in a while... but after the 500 miles, I wouldn't have been bothered by hopping back on it and going more. That means it's a good seat!

The gas mileage blows my mind!
First gas stop, after cruising exactly 100 miles right around 95 MPH - exactly 50 MPG! At that speed I was very impressed. Then cruising at 70 MPH I got exactly 60 MPG. Then my ride home was SLOW to save my rear tire, cruising at 65 MPH, I went 160 miles before the reserve light came on! Awesome! I was stuck once and forced to get regular octane. I forgot how small the tank is (I'm used to 5 gal.) so I thought I just needed enough to get a hundred miles north and they should have premium, so I just put 2 gallons in. Well, I realized that almost brought it all the way up, so I just put the last half gallon in and went on my way. I accellerated slow, and just cruised, and didn't notice any problems.

It fit my Wolfman Explorer tank bag EXTREMELY well! I was worried, because the bag is huge! But it fit perfect, and I didn't need to move it at all to fill up the tank.

I'm super pleased with the exhaust. It sounds great! And isn't too loud in my helmet! (Not NEARLY as loud in my head as the cyclone.)

The bar end mirrors are alright. I'm torn between them or the Aprilia tuono mirrors. I think I like the aprilia mirrors more, but the Bar ends look pretty cool.

The OEM grips are way to thin. I can't wait to add some Traction grips to it.

The tail bag looks good, but man is it tiny! It fits a pair of jeans and T-shirt, which is good, but I just wish it could fit a text book. It'd work GREAT for school if it was 2" larger.

This thing is SMOOTH! (compared to the cyclone!) BUT, it doesn't like to cruise as much. The cyclone (which is carbed) settles into any speed and putts along. this one seems to vary a bit. It likes to cruise around 80, but less than that it stutters just a bit, and it's just not perfectly smooth. No biggy. It's also not happy below 20 MPH (but neither am I).

A couple people I have to thank for the great weekend!

Packrat! I don't know if you surf this board still, but I thank you very much for the bike in general! And also for picking me up from the airport, and shipping the spare stuff!

And Twig! I can't thank you enough for setting me up at Buelltoberfest! It all worked out perfect. THANKS!

Mike, no problem! It was kind of funny to realize I had met you in March, but did not know you by your screen name. I also hope the gas we poured in did not leave any kind of stains on the bike. Later, and take care.

I haven't washed the bike yet, but there are no visible stains from the gas.

I've been busy busy, so I haven't uploaded pics yet. I only took a few anyway.

Got all the licensing and title stuff taken care of this afternoon. No problems there thank goodness.

I already tore into it a bit. I played with the headlights to see what Bi-Xenon's would look like. (again, pictures will be up later) Not sure if I like it or not. And they will require minor modification to fit.

I also found the problem with the left turn signals, a wire pulled out of the resistor. Some soldering should fix it up.

And I pulled off the windshield (quick release, super easy) and installed my ram mount to the handlebar.

Now I just need to order the axle sliders, tires, and brake pads.
