Not over the past 8 years.

The funding life span of most participants is about 50 years with another 20 years of retirement after that. I'll take a few "down" years over that 70 year time horizon.

Who cares, as long as iI'm 70 years old I want Bud Light, my Firebolt and a nice Persian or Greek wife. Firebolt first though...

You might want to check your facts Azxb9r. The S&P has done much better than your social security has over the past 8 years.

Which is the reason that long term investments have been safe in the past. I dearly hope that the market rebounds, but nothing is for certain in that arena. Historically, the stock market had never lost money over any 10 yr period. We are now sitting at an 8 yr period. Even if the market makes a huge rebound tomorrow, we will still be looking at the first 10 yr period of losses.
The market is a gamble.

The world is imploding. Live for today for tomorrow we die.

We have not been on a 10 year period of losses.. I'm not sure where you are seeing that. In fact, the Dow Jones was gaining steadily (albiet slowly for the most part) from 2003 until 2007. Prior to that was the results of 9/11.. but it came back stronger than ever after that.
You can't look at the beginning and end points, then make a determination of what happened in the middle.
Take a look at the timelines of the DJIA since 1999, it tells a different story than what you are describing.}
