My 02 Lightning is making castanet-like noises at under 5k miles which is not so good. Any input on roller rockers, aftermarket rocker shafts, tappets and pushrods would be greatly appreciated so I can have the parts in hand before taking the motor apart. Thanks in advance, Steve Ford |

Just a simple question here..did the 2000 & later Buells get the different type cam cover gasket due the engine case oiling ports being configured different as the Sportsters did? The Sportsters came out with a different type cam cover gasket in 2000-2003 models. If one installed a pre 2000 gasket on a 2000 & later type Sportster, the top end would start starving for oil causing a great ruckus in the valvetrain after about 10 miles & the engine warmed good. I'm certain the original question above isn't due to this..happens mostly when folks change cams..most HD dealers are not even aware of it, much less indy's. Food for thought...have pics of the difference if anyone needs em...just not sure it applies to Buell,s though I think it would. Dale A. |

Dale, I'm pretty sure that change affected Buell also. Some one posted the pictures a while back but I don't remember where or who. It may have been Aaron. If you have pictures, it maybe wouldn't be a bad idea to repost them over in the KV Primary area. Brad |

Steveford, Quite often the noise you are hearing is the cams. Roller rockers will not help. Jeff |

Here's a stupid question after a long day at work regarding an 02 Lightning: with the cam cover off and looking at the crankcase, to the left above the oil pump there's a hole or galley which is covered up by the cam cover gasket and has no corresponding mate in the cam cover. Does anyone know what the purpose of this passageway is and why it's sealed off by the gasket? Perplexed in PA, Steve Ford |
