from NHSTA

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallsearch.cfm -- just do the default search since 10/25/03

1 of 5 models listed for '99 & '00:

Make : BUELL Model : S3 THUNDERBOLT Year : 1999
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V427000 Recall Date : OCT 30, 2003
Component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 2830
Summary:
ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES EQUIPPED EXCLUSIVELY WITH A FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM, THE IDLE CONTROL CABLE CAN BECOME DISLODGED FROM THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM CABLE GUIDE DUE TO IMPROPER ADJUSTMENT OF THE THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM.
Consequence:
SHOULD THIS OCCUR, THE THROTTLE MAY NOT RETURN TO THE IDLE POSITION WHEN THE OPERATOR’S HAND IS REMOVED FROM THE TWIST GRIP, INCREASING THE RISK OF LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A THROTTLE CABLE CLAMP, WHICH SERVES TO ENSURE RETENTION OF THE THROTTLE CONTROL CABLES IN THE CABLE GUIDE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUELL AT 1-414-343-8400.
Notes:
BUELL RECALL NO. 0827. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

'99s didn't have the clamp. Some put it on though after hearing reports of the throttle sticking.

People shouldn't think it's simply taking all the slack out of both cables...this can lead to problems. The adjustment needs to be accomplished per the maintenance manual.

Can somebody post a pic or illustration of the throttle clamp and where it is to be installed.

Thanks

I put it on after it happened to me on the George Washington Parkway. Pretty scary but I had heard about this happening to others here and was able to get the bike slowed down, stopped and repaired.

And most of us did something like this years ago in case the cables came OUT OF ADJUSTMENT which causes the condition described.

...."most of us...."?

I think that's being extremely optimistic and I guess the recall numbers won't really prove who did/did not have the inclination to safety wire or install the clamp. If it wasn't for BadWeb or ATC relaying stories of stuck throttles, I would have never have done it. Come to think of it, I only did it on my '99 S3. I haven't done it on my carbed Buells nor my cars.

You may be right.....perhaps that is too general, maybe "most the badweb readers". All the more reason for a corporate website with a well managed fresh tech section, eh?

Legally tough perhaps but I can dream!

Dave, Court....Thanks for the pics and commentary. Now, I know what to look for prior to receiving a recall notice or someone posting a service bulletin/advisory.

My Y2K carbed bike has the clamp . . . . I'd be surprised if your X1 didn't . . .. . worth checking, though, as this is NOT the same thing as the Audis that accelerated when the brake was activated some years ago

>>>>this is NOT the same thing as the Audis that accelerated when the brake was activated some years ago

There is yet to be made a vehicle on which the throttle will overpower the brakes.

CAVEAT: I do not recall where I had heard that or if it is still true. But, I'd be willing to be that any vehicle commercially sold, at full throttle, can be quickly stopped with it's brakes.

The Buell should, given it's noted brakes and the constant lack of power chants, excel here. A "stuck throttle", skills in tune, should startle you first and piss you off next...not take you on a wild ride.

I thought the whole Audi deal along with the other alledged "sudden acceleration" incidents boiled down to 1 simple fact. You had folks hitting the gas instead of the brake? Some of the cars had such small pedals & almost no room between them that folks thought they were hitting the brake but where instead stomping on the gas.

I dont recall reading that any cars were actually found defective. Although just to rule it out thats when the manufacturers developed that interlocking transmission deal. Cant shift out of park without hitting the brakes.

You're right . . .there was no mysterious, non-existant failure mode, which is why I suggested that Nev do check his throttle cables . . . since it's not the same, get it?

damn, I have, once again, wandered so far off the page that, not only is no one with me, they're not even wondering where I am anymore (grin)

I only did mine after it happened to me.

Whatever happened with the family of the guy who died at Daytona on the demo ride? I thought his brother was on here for a little while afterwards.

Court...Just remember since your last birthday, you are now a member of the Old Timer's Club and most likely suffer from the disease bearing the same name.

Bomber...Tis the reason I asked for a pic. Would like to go see for myself.

If you look up the recall on the NHTSA sight, it is no big deal. All it says is that the cables could become dislodged due to improper adjustment and that if it occurs the throttle may not spring to the closed position by itself when releasing the grip.

Think about it. The only time I can remember not closing the throttle manually is when I already fell off the bike and I did that a lot learning to ride offroad in So Cal's mountains and deserts. In fact, with my aftermarket throttle lock, compliments of Old Timer's Disease, I often forget to turn it off and don't even notice it for the same reason. LMAO.

Incidentally, concerning the Audi issue, the problem was only experienced on the vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions.

I forgot exactly what the problem was but at the time I knew a lot of folks that scored some fantastic deals on new Audi's with manual transmissions compliments of the press and resulting consumer reaction. In fact, once the fear factor was put to rest, they made a decent profit when selling them.

That happened to my mom in her Audi 100 back about '92 or so. It had an automatic too. She was stopped at a red light and the engine started racing. Luckily she had her foot tight on the brakes and threw it into neutral.

My wife had an Audi 80 when we got married. I wish the throttle had stuck and totalled it off the bat, could have saved us a boatload of money...

$750 for one of the two exhaust cans. Not full exhaust, just muffler. One of two. Not installed, that was just the price for the part.

Took it to midas and told them to weld on anything they could fit in there...

I should get an Audi for my soon-to-be-ex! Then I can wish for the throttle to stick and total the old bat. I'd save a boatload of money.
Hey. Was that an echo? Strange distortion. Must be the drugs.

I know for a fact that both Audi 5000's and 100's do burn too. One was a fuel line and the other was my dad thinking it was safer to leave it running stuck in dirt topped with hay. Don't ask, but the insurance company did pay. They just told us to not buy another Audi.

At the time of the Audi recall my mother owned one. The problem was the drivers "thinking" they were mashing the brake when they were in fact mashing the gas. After the recall you had to put a significant force on the brake to shift out of park.

ANyone have the Service Bulletin (pdf) for this recall? I was curious if Buell updated/changed the throttle adjustment procedures from what's in the '99 service manual.
