My freakn desk top has gotten a pretty wicked virus. I have tried a bunch of different freeware cleaners and am done screwing around and am going to format it and reinstall windows. But before I do so I am trying to get whats important to me off my c drive ( pictures and itunes music) and onto a second internal hard drive I previously installed.

The problem is when I fire this turd up (normal or in safe mode) my start bar wont load and It wont let me drag in drop into the new folder or copy paste with either right click or ctrl c/v

What do I do? I have had it.
If there is anyone close by that can help me out I'll buy you a few beers or change the oil in your bike, what ever you choose.

If it's a virus, transfering files to another hard drive could spread it to the other hard drive and complicate your problem. If you can get the desktop to get online, try the free virus removal offered by McCafee and Norton/Symantek. There are others that offer a one time only freeby also. There are a couple of bad viruses going around currently.

this thing has totally hosed my internet connection so I had to down load the 4 free cleaners onto my laptop (cleaned that while I was at it) and then transfer to my desktop via a pen drive and its still messed up
It is saying that there are missing DLL files so I'm guessing that I got the virus off but it took important stuff with it to run windows properly.

I realize I could transfer the virus to my back up drive with some of the files but I planed on heavily cleaning it before I transfer them back, and then If I do still get a bug then I'll just have to take it on the chin that I'm screwed.

Of course there are no Virus' on Macs.

No one uses them so why would they waste their time written a virus.

You could get a USB hard drive enclosure, put your hosed drive in there, connect it to your laptop and get the files you want to save. Enclosures are cheap and can be found at most electronic/office supply stores.

Your best bet would be to pull the hard drive out and put it in another computer. From there the good computer can copy the files off the drive to cd/dvd/another drive/etc.

Question, do you know what the virus is?

If not, do you know if you really have a virus?

If you need to remove any of your files, do you have a CD/DVD burner?

If you are missing any DLL's, put in your original windows CD (vista/xp) and use the "repair" feature. It will not fix everything, but it will get you to a point where your basic system should function.

Then you can go about removing your personal files.

Back up - back up - back up ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Can't be said enough.
Y'all have no idea how much easier things would be if you back up important files!
If pictures are your thing, when saving them to your hard drive, go ahead add a step and burn them to CD or DVD.
If any kind of data is important to you take an extra step and do the same.
It makes a lot of computer issues a non-issue.
Weather you use Windows, Apple, Linux or whatever, computers can die ugly deaths.
Be it operating system, hardware, or what have you.
If you have a back up, it makes things like this much easier to deal with.
I know adding steps ain't easy or fun and it takes a little time, but it is well worth the effort when things get ugly.
I've leaned the hard way.

Well, the way I do it, I'd only have to back up 3TB once, after that it only backs up any changes I've made, No need to back up the same data every time.
To each his own.
That 3TB must not be very important.

I get accused of that all the time, there is next to none, possibly only 20mb tops, and odds are its some file that was intensionally mis labeled when i downloaded it. The Incognito feature of Google Chrome rocks .: )

rsync to a NAS FTW!

and in the case of work. 1 8TB array here, syncing to another 8TB array 50 miles west of here (Got to love Long Haul RPR based GIG-E). Couple that with Snap Volumes and it all good.
