Well as some of you already know, hunting is my "other" passion in life. This last week has been both great and bad. Let's go back to a week ago Friday.

My hunting partner and me are all pumped about blackpowder season opening the next day. Saturday morning about 7:15 I shoot a nice little doe and the season is looking good. We have 4 tags between the two of us and the first one is filled! We hunt the rest of the day and no more deer fall to us. Sunday we hunt the morning with no luck but that was about to change. I got on stand about 4pm Sunday afternoon and after watching a small deer in the hayfield we are by for about an hour a very nice and fat doe steps along the fence row that is 25 yards from my stand! I take aim and fire. The deer falls in the middle of the hayfield, cool, no having to drag this one out of the woods. I reload and about 20 minutes late, a nice 8 point buck walks to almost the same spot. I aim,I shoot, the buck goes about 30 feet and piles into a fence! Now we have 3 tags filled by the second day of season.

Monday morning I get a call at home while I'm getting ready for work, Larry my 67 year old hunting partner has shot another nice doe!

Tuesday night we cut up the deer and we think the pressure is off of us!

Thursday night I blow it on a nice 9 point with my bow(we have 4 bow tags), not one shot but 3! I can't believe I missed.

Friday morning we take the trimming to the meat plant to have sausage and ground deer made up. All is good!

Friday night I miss again, this time on a nice doe.

I get home Sat night after not seeing any deer, except for the 4 that some other hunters without permission to hunt there scare away(bastards).
I'm downstairs getting out of my hunting clothes and my wife Penny comes down and tells me we have no deer meat? I think she means that she has cooked up the last 2 packages in the freezer from last year. She says "no, we don't have any deer meat, the meat plant blew up and burnt to the ground today! I ask if anyone got hurt and goods news, everyone made it out unharmed.4 deer worth of trimmings and a lot of hard work, out the window.

On the bright side, we still had the enjoyment of the hunt, which is why I hunt anyway.
Now the pressure is on again. I will have to use my bow to fill the freezer this year.

Ride to the edge!

Dang!

Clear a space, get a stainless steel table surface, some good honing stones or a wheel, wrapping paper, grease pencils and do it all yourself!!

Hardest part is disposing of the bones and waste...

Similar deal happened here last year - processing plant burned. It was in the middle of the night and nobody was hurt, but there were a lot of people who lost all of the deer meat. A friend of mine who is a fire fighter was there and said it smelled pretty good though. Actually there were quite a few guys working that blaze who had deer in there. Everything was a total loss. Makes you wonder how many guys lost animals that they wanted to make mounts out of (trophies, kids first deer, etc).

Kevyn,
I grew up as a meat cutter and did it as a living til I was 21 and hurt my back.
To make ground venison and sausage you would also need a grinder and a smokehouse. That's the only reason I had to take the trimmings in.

Dave,
Let me know when you guys have that chili cook off again. Guess there probably won't be any venison chili there, but the rest was good!

Dave,

Plan a trip up here in the fall.

Its a big business here - guided hunting tours of the Interior of Newfoundland.

Last week a friend of mine got a moose that when dressed still weighed just under 600lbs.

Would that be "pre-cooked venison."

Heard about the fire this morning. That's too bad about the deer meat But like you said, it's the hunt that you enjoy and you had some wonderful weather.

So, are we going deer hunting for tomorrow night's BRAG meeting?

No, I didn't but would have loved to have either of those two walk past my treestand!
We did manage to harvest an 8 point buck last Sunday. I cut it up yesterday.
We also went out pheasant hunting for the first time this season yesterday, took it easy, first time out for my new dog. We ended up with 3 birds in about an hour so not too bad. I missed a couple others, lots of birds this year in Iowa! Going back out deer hunting on Sunday!

Dave...

I am getting old... and not up with what is the fad now-a-days... and I guess I shouldn't read these posts without my glasses and before coffee.

I was worried sick about what was going on when I read your post this morning... I thought you wrote you went peasant hunting!!

A very interesting concept... but what a waste of meat... unless it is a Donner's Pass kind of cuisine. Taking paint ball to the next step????

Wait... are you British? Don't the Brits call women "birds". The feminist groups are gonna hate this!!! Didn't some place like the "Ranches" in Las Vegas do that kind of paint ball hunting and raised a stink that went national involving feminists groups??

Maybe I have done too much man hunting in my career? Now that I am old... life is sooooo confusing!!!

I am at work... so I will go back to sleep now!!

Keith,
I would but I don't hunt ducks, don't like to eat them so I don't hunt them.
I'd still take you out pheasant hunting if you want to come up. Let me know.

Dave,
I am the same way. Only hunt what I will eat. I'd love to come up and try my hand at pheasants. Sam is headed this direction for a Duck hunt the 8th of Nov. I believe. maybe we can line something up around or near that? How long does your season run? Do they have like a one day out of state license or a 3 day? I'll drop you a line early next week. Sure you don;t want to come down? I'll eat the ducks so you don't have to feel guilty about it! ;)

Dave...

OK... I am fired up... and on a rant. First of all... everyone I asked about what they were handing out tonight for Halloween said they would not be home... or they were handing out little dinky pieces of candy. FIRST OF ALL... I AM NOT driving all the way across town for a dinky little piece of candy... but I am telling you all... I WILL DRIVE that distance with a bunch of eggs!!! So get some big candy bars and for once think about me!!!

Secondly... we hire a few off duty cops to help when we are short handed. I asked the one I was working with today, what he was handing out... or would I need to buy another ½ dozen eggs for his house! His response... "I have to work tonight." Once again yet another person who is not thinking about me! Then he adds he will not be working patrol... he will be working a sobriety check point. NOW THAT REALLY SET ME OFF!!!

God... can you believe it... a sobriety check point on Halloween.... what a frigging waste of tax payer dollars! Who thinks of this sh*t!!! Just how many arrests do they think they can make on Halloween!!!

I can see it now...

Officer, "I need you to stop for a minute... we are conducting a sobriety check point and by law you must cooperate."

Citizen, "Sure mister... er... I mean officer, what do you need me to do?"

Officer, "What is your name?"

Citizen, "It is Timmy"

Officer, "OK Timmy... take off your mask... put down your sack of candy... and when I bend down... I want you to breath into my face so I can check your breath for the odor of alcohol."

Timmy, "Shouldn't my mom or dad be called... don't I have rights?"

Officer, "Now listen Timmy... and listen good. We have ways of dealing with people like you. Step over to the other officer. I have reason to believe that peppermint smell on and about your person is Schnapps!

THIS JUST ENRAGES ME... how many drunk kids are they going to find... and if they do find one.... like there is going to be some 7 year old in a Power Rangers costume driving a car!!!

What the hell is wrong with the cops!!!!!

And beyond that...

Does anyone know where I can get about 30 dozen eggs that will fit in my paintball gun???

By the way... what are you handing out tonight? I think I have enough gas money to XB up to Iowa if it is something good! If it is something dinky... is there a telephone number for a co-worker of yours that I can contract with to egg your house??? I ain't riding that far to just egg one house!!!

Jeez Dennis!

You can come over to my house for candy! Always buy all kinds of candy for the kids but for some reason only a couple brave souls have the guts to come up and knock on the door!
