Can anyone recommend a bluetooth earpiece that is comfortable for use inside a helmet? I have a Plantronics Voyager 520 that works great with my Zumo and cell phone but it just barely fits inside my Shoei and is very uncomfortable. |

Hey Steve, How's everything? Here's what I do. I put the damn cel phone in my pocket, and concentrate on riding. More fun that way, and safer too. Of course being retired, and not a high powered exec. like yourself, I can stay out of touch for an hour or two, ( my max seat time:-). Much longer than that, I got the bike on the trailer, and the iPhone Bluetoothing to the Garmin GPS Navigator hands free speakerphone. I may be old, but I ain't old fashioned.

Jon, LOL. You are still my inspiration! BTW - you must try the new New Jersey Motorsports track before you give up track days. |

The Scala Rider works well but it's older tech now. I have the FM version so I can listen to my favorite stations as I ride. I wish it would play my GPS voice prompts but the blue tooth isn't advanced enough for that. |

Jersey, I know it's been covered before, but I highly recommend something made for motorcycling. I use the Scala Rider headset from CARDO. Removeable base station, mount that latches to the helmet but is removable, mic boom that goes to my mouth, and an earpiece that fits in the helmet great. Up to 50mph people can hear me fine. Higher than that starts getting too much noise cancellation. Your mileage may vary due to the helmet you wear. I don't live by it, but there have been times that having that headset has saved me time and effort. |

Blueant makes one as well that's supposed to work well - also works bike to bike for something like 500 meters? I have a BlueAnt speakerphone in my car. They do make nice stuff. |

I have the Scala as well. I don't use it to talk on the phone much. Bike to bike it works for about .25 mile. Phone calls I have recieved have been very clear. They are coming out with a stereo version in January. The FM is too squeaky for me in mono(though 2 speakers). I will get the new version when it is out. The range is supposed to be extended to about 2 miles as well(depending on terrain). Anyway, the Scala works great! And if you guys want to do a group purchase, I can see what kind of deal could be had. |

The current units can be linked to 2 others at a time. The new units will be able to link to 5 others at a time. I think 6 talkers may be a bit much though... |

Mark, my cardo scala fm plays gps voice prompts just fine. Only problem is the volume doesn't control gps prompts so I get to my destination but nearly deaf |

http://us.jawbone.com/ Jawbone by far the best. Noise cancelation...plus the more noise there is the louder it gets to make up for it. Works really well in my jeep with the top and doors off. |

Pammy and others, Thanks for the info. The Scala rider looks very promising. I mainly want it for Garmin Zumo voice prompts and a rare emergency type phone call. I definitely do not want it for music as I find it way too distracting on my typical spirited ride. My boys and I just like to take off and get lost. The Zumo will get us back. Marksm, please explain why the bluetooth didn't work for your GPS. |

It's possibly because I am running TomTom 6 on my AT&T Tilt phone. Once it's paired to the phone it doesn't do anything else. It's also possible that I gave up on it too fast when it didn't immediately work and there's some other step I need to go through. Does yours work just by pairing it up? |

Marksm, I have an app that you need to make it all work. It is a little late to go into the full detail right now, but read my thread, it should explain it. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/260528.html FYI I am working on a new version of my system. Details late in the year. |

Marksm, Yes, my Plantronics bluetooth works perfectly by just pairing up with the Garmin. The only issue I had was when the Plantronics inadvertently paired up directly with the phone and not through the Garmin. When that happened, I couldn't answer a call because the earpiece acknowledge button was inside the helmet and the call was not indicated on the Garmin. I've decided that I'm getting this one: http://www.cardowireless.com/node/466/features |

Corporatemonkey, I have a piece of software that is also called bluetooth audio that came from a defunct company called Triangle software. It works to stream mp3's to my plantronics headset but it doesn't seem to work with the scala. I left Mays a note asking if it was the same software. Thanks, (Message edited by marksm on September 18, 2008) |

I have done my research on this. May's app is quite unique on how it accomplishes its goal. If May's does not support the app any longer (ie if it is abandonware), let me know. |

Mays app works for transmitting the TomTom voice prompts to the scala Rider FM. But it completely shuts out the FM tuner on the headset while it's active. |

That is the way it is supposed to work. It holds the BT channel open, preventing WinMobile to enter a standby mode. To have FM, and gps prompts on a WM device will be nearly impossible. The navigation app would have to be written for each different model, as BT stacks vary from manufacture (there is no standard BT stack in WM, each manufacture uses their own) If your device has the ram and processing power you can always run an mp3 in the background. |
