I picked up this link from the Yahoo Buell group.

http://www.chickshd.com/buellpage.htm

It's Jim Hickerson's account of his 2003 Iron Butt ride on his S3T. Scroll down the page and click on his photo or the link to download a Word document of his account.

Like most Iron Butt accounts, it's a great read. His only mechanical problem was a bad battery, which he admits he should have replaced before starting the ride. Interestingly, he gives very high marks to all of the Harley dealerships he dealt with on his ride.

I'm not an Iron Butt kind of guy so I don't really understand what's going on, but...

Why, if he's only riding 1,000 miles, did he have to deal with any HD dealer? Did the Goldwing people have to deal with a Honda Dealer, the BMW guys have to deal with a BMW dealer, the ....? you get the idea.

Ray - over half the BMW's didn't even finish - so I'd say yea - they also probably saw their dealers - or called it quits.

Ray--Check out the story. It was the big one, 10,000 miles. He needed a new rear tire.

Iron butt competitors are quite a bunch.

Most put extra gas tanks on the bikes, carry their food and water on board, and have really bright lights for the night driving......so that they can do as few of stops as possible....Great to see buell there.......Fran Cran, an iron butt competitor tried a buell a couple of years ago. rex

I'd try it,

Had I kept riding like I was for the 20th Anniversary Trip and never stopped for the 20th Events I would have easily completed 10000miles in 14 days instead of the 6000miles I did. Two days I did a little over 1000miles with no major problems other than fatigue near the end of the day.

The only problem I had was the isolator and did not require any retailer to fix - myself and Don (Oz666 in Buffalo) got it back on the road in about 4 hrs.

I'd love to compete in an Iron Butt Rally - Any One Out There wanna Sponsor ME. I could see me doing it on NEW XB12S - hint, hint, hint.

Better Yet an East Coast to West Coast Adventure!!!!!

Newfie, I will spot you a set of gel grips.

I am dying for the opportunity to do more than a 500 mile weekend. Only 17 more years until the littlest one goes off to college and I am on my way.

Why are you letting that stop you!!!!

Here was my welcoming committee when I got back!!

Elsa, Riley and Connor - the fourth (Morgan) was fast asleep.

The End

You should plan a trip next year when I decide to make my way across Canada and the US again OR come over this way with Spidey and da boys.

I respect anyone that rides the real Iron Butt. A close friend did it a few years back and observing his training program and logistical support mechanism was absolutely overwhelming. It took him 18 months to prep and almost as long to come down afterwards. It truly was a major event in his life that none of us will ever understand until we do it. Incidentally, I share in his enthusiasm for the endeavor but would never consider it. I just can't rationalize taking a recreational activity to that level as it consumed his entire life for roughly three years. Kudos to anyone that participates in the Iron Butt. It is a level of dedication that very few will ever attain in their lives.

Newfie...Prep time was mechanical prep and physical/mental training. Like your concept but after a few 1,000+ mile days at high speeds to get the extra points, there is no scenery. Just ticket and accident prevention.

FYI, a number of other friends were accepted to participate in the next Iron Butt and all dropped out after seeing the toll it took on this fellow.

Riding the Iron Butt to just be a "Finisher" is tough enough and the fellow that wrote the article did an excellent job sugar coating the ordeal. Almost sounded like a sales pitch for the Iron Butt. Would be interesting to read what he has to say about those that did get the top three positions.

Whoops...I forgot the most important thing. I think this gentleman did and outstanding job and praise him for promoting Buell's via this event! That is the kind of "good press" that Buell needs.

Ray:

It can be a ball....a friend of mine, after piping "how tough could it be?", came to the USA, rode the Iron Butt and placed respoecatble 3rd or something like that.

Biggest problem was breaking him of driving through seedy neighborhoods, cash hanging out of his pockets, playing "Louis, Louiw" by The Kingsman on the cassette deck through the outward facing speakers he'd installed.

He had so damn much fun he came back next time and rode the Iron Butt on a 175cc (technically a 167cc) Zundapp. Sure, he had to fly cylinders and heads around the country and replace the barrel and head like 6 times, but what the heck.

Funniest story was when he pulled over to get fuel and lost his "purse" (German for wallet). He discovered it a couple hundred miles down the road, turned around, went back, found it on the ground, turned around and continued....logging some horrendous mileage figure for the day.

No wait....the funniest part is that I drive him up to East Troy, we walk in Erik's office, chew the fat for 20 minutes and I ask him "have you seen everything you wanted" to which he replies ...."I'm sorry we weren't able to meet Erik Buell, but the guy in the green t-shirt and torn up sneakers seemed to know a great deal".

Dweeb, proclaimed Court..."That WAS Erik". I guess I forgot, in the excitement, to introduce them.

Remind me later to tell you the entire story. It involes my S-2 being put on an airplane to be sent to me. Off loaded half way there, intercepted and given to me in the middle of the night, when I continued to ride.

Chauly and Denise...you are SWORN to secrecy until statute of limitations expire! Could we party then or what?

Newfie, and any of the rest of you that are interested- you don't have to jump right into the full Iron Butt Rally. They award certificates for completing 1000 miles in 24 hours- a "Saddle Sore 1000", as well as other mileages. You just have to provide proof of your start and completion times and locations, like a time/dated gasoline receipt. They say this is a good way to start out. Check out the Iron Butt site at http://www.ironbutt.com for more details.

Whodom,

I already have the information - I just have to sit down and calculate the milage and receipts.

I am thinking about starting the First Annual NewfieButt on the next Summer Solstice. I already have three other guys here on the island wanting to do it. I figure across the island and back in one day is about 1000miles.

A couple of friends did the saddle sore 1000 last year but they went to a local dealer and picked up some rental bikes. They figured it was cheaper than putting that many miles on their own bikes.
Just a thought.

If you are in colorado in 2004 there is an Iron Butt (saddle sore 1000) in Aug. My wife and I have done it the last 2 years in a row and plan on doing it again. We have completed the ride on a 2001 M2 Cyclone, this year we did it in 20hr- 14min. Its a hell of a ride thru the Rockies, each year is a different route but is always fun..
