GE in schenectady NY is hire left and right. The work force is old and most of the people will retire in about 5 years or so. 80% of all the machinist in 3 to 5 years will be gone. GE is stocking up and getting as many people trained as possible. So if you have any mechanical back ground or if you are a machinist or comparable to one go to www.gecareers.com and apply. A machinist hired in off the street is hired in at a D22 rate which right now i believe is about $28 an hour top of the labor grade is a D25 which is right now about $32 an hour. I was hired last November at a D25 but started at a D23 rate in the last 10 months i have received on progression raise, one contractual raise and 2 COLA raises. As for their benefits you won't find them better anywhere except for maybe a State job. Needless to say the average machinist in that plant on 40 hours a week makes over $70,000 a year and that's not including O.T. If you are a machinist looking for work now is the time to go to GE and look for work. One of the old timers told me i have it made because GE 20 years ago laid of their final machinists and found out they screwed up when they recalled guys and they refused, GE lost good machinist and have not laid one of in 20 years. He told me the only way i will lose my job is if something huge was to happen and the plant would shut down. Chances of that happening is slim to none. This plant in the energy portion of GE's business is the biggest money maker only 6% of their cost relates to the blue collar worker so they do not mind paying us what the do. And for you white collar guys and gals GE has a stiffy when it comes to hire you. In the GE schenectady plant, for every blue collar worker on the floor there is about 4 maybe 5 white collar workers. It is well worth a chance. GE is always hiring they have hundreds of adds on www.gecareers.com for all types of position not just schenectady, check them out. There are HUGE opportunities in the power business. I am aware of 5 plants in the planning stages in New York City and I got another call, from an upstate firm, yesterday about a job running a new 345kV substation to be built in Queens. The G.E. guys I work with love the company and are getting something like $3500 a month in per diem and housing assistance for the cost differential of living in NYC. I predict this will go on for the next 30 years. |

Court you wouldn't be speaking of a ConEd project would you? I love ConED (edit: I love their stable dividend) |

No I am not. Although I work for ConEd (I also love their dividends, great stock purchase plan and 22% rate increase ) there are private projects. ConEd no longer produces any significant power with the exception of the ERRP and HARP. We are meeting National Geographic tomorrow morning to start filming a documentary on a project we are doing. There are at least 5 incredibly interesting projects I am involved with now that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime . . . . how about boring a 18' diameter tunnel under the river and running 2 345kV feeds from Westchester to Manhattan! HERE you can read about one of my "day jobs".

D, I think that last little adventure wore the feller out. Hasn't been much insane from him in years now. Hope he hasn't turned old and dull on ya. |

Madduck, Guess if moving from one coast to the other JUST to find the best roads in the country ain't nutz.... well maybe you missed the bait... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=4062&post=1244294#POST1244294 and.... if you don't need an 1125 in your collection, well, the 2009 touring Harleys with the claim to "improved cornering clearance" have piqued some interest in that Ferris fellow. With the floorboards now razor blade thin on the '06 Road King I too would like to test that statement. |

D & Jerry- Oh shoot, I forgot you guys were out that way. I just got back from a whirlwind ride thru Kentucky, Viginia & W. Virginia. It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment type thing and didn't do much planning. All I can say about VA & WVA is WOW! We had coal trucks chasing us down mountain roads just about as fast as I wanted to take our pack mules thru those blind curves. |

Damn Mike, you didn't call me!!! (Just kidding...) I'd not seen the last picture, man, that's a classic. Unless you were there for the "original" thong shot, you just won't get it! |

Brad- I thought about calling but it was such a short term deal. I've spent most of my time getting our Cedar Rapids office back together that all my other work is falling to the side. I have been getting called back in at night and weekends and had to get away. Jeff heard me talking about it and said he needed to get away too. Now my delimma for next year is 'Colorado or the Virginias. If we go to MBVI we may need to spend a couple of days along the way. The problem is that there is no direct route there. |
