Back when I was going to design school, all the guys doing graphic design (2D) used Macs because they were the best.

Anybody doing anything 3-D or with animation used PCs - the Macs jsut didn't cut it.

My PCs have been like my '02 Cyclone. They were cheap when I bought them. They were bordering on obsolescence even when new. The only things that have been unreliable have been owner inflicted. They have more speed than the average person needs.

I have been impressed by the Macs I have used, but I just can't justify the price difference compared to a similar PC.

I was a pre-press Mac Operator for a printing company for 6 years, PC's couldn't match Macs. I then moved on to become a designer and have been using PC's for the last 6 years. PC's still have a difficult time multi-tasking in programs that take alot of Ram, but they're geting better. I'm not sure Vista is going to help though.

It used to be that all the design programs I used to run were for MAC only and you couldn't find Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator, Page Maker and Corel Draw for PC's. Now its harder to find them for MAC.

I know MAC's can run Window's programs and can clone PC's, but why go through that crap if I can just buy a PC?

The MAC (OS X) has a better operating system these days.... my opinion. Windows has been a bloated stinkfest the last 12 years or so no matter what hardware it runs on.

Keep your eyes open for a little open source OS for the PC called HAIKU in about 2 years. Not perfect but the fundamental design is more current than either OS X or Windows in my opinion.

Of course, each to his own so YMMV.

No debate:

As of recent Macs have the better os, better designed forms and they are cheaper than PC's

Anyone who disagrees has been living in a cave.

The iMac mini starts at $600.00, which at Best Buy is the cheapest MAC.

The Mac Pro, which is closest to my $1800.00 Compaq here at work, is $2700.00

Apple isn't cheap.

Linux has nearly all the good virtues of PC's with nearly none of the negatives.

And Ubuntu is getting *dangerously* close to being as "it just works right" as a Mac is.

The successor to Google Chrome will make both Windows and MacOS absolute dinosaurs, but Linux will be hidden in Chrome and everywhere (invisibly) in the cloud.

Chrome is just an Internet browswer, not an OS

My problem is that people keep buying them, blinded that market prices of the chips, memory, etc. inside have declined and PC makers have continued to lower their prices to reflect this.

All Apple lovers...Do you love throwing your money away?

I use both side by side, the Mac works better hands down. The pc does not suck, it works fine relatively speaking ( better than my coworkers virus/spam laden boxes anyway because of their dumb practices. )That cost thing has not washed with me for quite a while as I have never had to put more than $200.00 additional software costs into any mac I have owned and 50% of that goes to the shareware community for nifty little programs that work and are not buggy. I use my pc for our companies GPS tracking (activeX) system and a few other ActiveX dependent operations, All other daily tasks / programs (14 + VMWare running XP currently up) on my Little iMac. (Though my dual screens and 8 Expose Desktops help with the clutter)

To me the best thing about PCs is that they are cheap and they are everywhere. I have always used PCs. I have often had problems with them that I struggled to get straightened out, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. At least when I didn't get it worked out they were cheap to replace. Sometimes the data was not.

Macs are not perfect, but I bought an iMac a couple of years ago and it has been really good. Ironically, the mouse didn't seem to want to work right, so Apple sent me $50 and I bought a Microsoft wireless mouse that is sweet. Outside of that, this thing just works. To me a computer is a tool. I don't write code anymore. I just want to turn the thing on and get my work done or play on the internet. I don't want headaches or issues. I may never buy a PC again.

I was never involved with that stuff, so i can only say what I was told. The work I did was all with my hands, building models and such.

Bear in mind this was 8 years ago.

mac are cheaper than PC's.

Basically, it boils down to cost of ownership

a few high points:

Out the door prices are close

Resale on the mac is far better

Lots of good free software on the mac, you would have to spend some green to get the same functionality on the PC.

No need for anti virus/anti spy ware software to buy, and no use of processor resources to run that crap.

downtime costs/cost of maintenance/repairs/tech support is a lot cheaper on the mac.

Mac's tend to be used a lot longer than PC's most people buy a mac and hold on to for a long time, as compared to PCs.

Accessories, macs come with a mic/camera built-in.

don't take my word for it, some reading:

"Out the door prices are close"

Nope. A Mac that even comes remotely close to my PC costs $6k+. My current computer cost about $2200 including monitor.

"Resale on the mac is far better"

Never sold a used computer before, I have kept all my systems going back to 200 MHz Pentium running 3.1 and Win95.

"Lots of good free software on the mac, you would have to spend some green to get the same functionality on the PC"

Lots of good free software on the PC, you would have to spend some serious green to get the same functionality on the Mac. : )

"No need for anti virus/anti spy ware software to buy, and no use of processor resources to run that crap. "

None of my Vista computers have that. Vista is very secure and fast. Even my sister hasn't been able to infest her Vista laptop with any kind of spyware or virus.

"downtime costs/cost of maintenance/repairs/tech support is a lot cheaper on the mac."

No. Apple's support tends to cost more, giving the fact that there is less Apple certified techs than PC. Also higher costs of Apple parts make them less economical to fix. Oh yea and you have to then deal with a "genius bar". What kind of arrogant egotistical company calls their tech support that? I take that as an insult that I'm stupid if something is wrong with my Mac.

"Mac's tend to be used a lot longer than PC's most people buy a mac and hold on to for a long time, as compared to PCs. "

Again my Pentium 200MHz IBM Aptiva....

"Accessories, macs come with a mic/camera built-in."

Some PC's do too, and if they don't a $10 webcam would fix that. Honestly I would rather that my computer didn’t come with one, as its something I would never use and would rather the cost went to something else like a bigger hard drive : )

Oh yea there is one thing that comes standard on a Mac that you don’t get with a PC, and that’s the cloud of smug that hovers over you and makes you think your better than everyone else. : )

If you're a gamer or need a specific application suite for work... Go with a windows box (I recomend Vista).

If you just e-mail and browse (and your nose is pointed a bit too high)... Go with a Mac.

If you want all of it... Go with Linux.

Linux is a bit of a more technical animal but there are some distributions that are QUITE good for everyone from the beginner to the advanced server operator and network engineer.

Ubuntu.

i-sheep....bahhhhhhh, bahhhhhhhhhh.

Barker if you had a clue. My $379 acer laptop came with a camera and microphone, it is wireless, I wish it had built in blue tooth, but I can get it in a year or so when I upgrade . Open office is free, avista antivirus software is free. The Dvd software I use is again free.

I don't need much in the way of support, I have been using pc's since dos 2.1 and my Pc-jr back in the mid 80's. Yep I had one of the first chicklett keyboard one of the first optical mice that used a gridded stainless plate.

I don't like much of what apple does. AAF sucks you lose too much quality when you rip your cd collection, I like MP3 or AIFF as my encoder no loss in quality. Plus I worry about the rumored digital signature that Itunes puts on your ripped music. Share it with a friend, they share it on the web your busted for piracy.

http://www.marketingvox.com/itunes-user-tracking-c ould-help-nab-pirates-030203/

Don't get me started on iphones, ipods and inosehairpicker.

Sorry the macbook starts at $1049
Mac air is $1800 you have gotta be kidding me.

I can replace my windows laptop three to five times for each mac. Just remember they all explode in about the same number of pieces when you drop them.

A Computer is a tool not a lifestyle
