I pretty much know what I have to do, but I don't want to make the decision myself. I need to hear it from others.

What I have: 1999 M2, 31000 miles.
What happened: Popping from exhaust. Studs loose on front cylinder. Bought new studs to replace front and rear. Snapped stud off in rear head. Drilled and ez-outed. ez-out broke off (of course) and I removed the head to get at it. Now I've got a v-twin with an untouched front cylinder and a big cup holder in the back.
What I want to do: Ride!
Additional info: The belt is worn and cracked. The rear pulley is chipped. The valves and piston are crusty. The front shocks are mushy. The rear brake is mild. The front tire is tired. The isolators... ?. I bought a top-end gasket kit for both front and rear.

What I should do: (Your answer goes here)

Put new Thunderstorm heads on it and perform the routine maintenance that should have been done earlier!

Drop the heads off at one of our sponsors for some CNC headwork. Since the heads are off, might as well get a 1250 cc big bore kit(on sale at aforementioned sponsor), get some cams while your at it. Reassemble with the proper antiseize/loctites, ride. I can't wait till I break an exhaust stud!

Answer....A is a two parter

A1: Take the head to the nearest REPUTABLE machine shop and have em drill out that ez-out. (it can be done, dont ask me how I know)

A2: Take the other head off and send em both to a BWB sponsor for a 1250 kit.

B: Spend some $ with Al at American Sport Bike to get the rest of it right.

C: Sell it to a BWB member (to avoid mutant-osis) that needs a project and put the money towards another Buell.

Oh, I should mention something else: Money is tight, so there's no room for hop-ups. And the ez-out is out. It's my baby and I'm keeping it.

I guess what I'm asking is: Should I slap it back together and ride, or check/fix what needs to be fixed, and forget about riding until 2009?

Winter is coming... You could just buy it peice by peice... Find some XB heads on ebay cheap. Buy the big bore when there's money, etc. Spread the cost out over a few months to ease the sting. You can bet when you're done, you'll be in love again.

If you just put the motor together and run some seafoam into the cylinders, the crustiness will be cleaned right up. Depending on the severeness of the valve buildup, etc you may want to have a valve job performed while the head it off. The XB heads will eliminate the need though.

Put some new springs in the front end, new fluid and seals if needed. Replace the belt. Replace the isolators. Change the tires since it's been/has been sitting for a while and it'll be ready for spring.

Take your time fixing it and, in the meantime, buy a used Blast and ride the hell out of it.

It's been almost 2 months since I've taken the bike apart, and I miss riding it. But I guess I'll need to fix all of its woes. Just sucks to have stopped riding in July and not be able to go again until who-knows-when.

I have NO thoughts about selling it, not that there's much of a trade-in value:

Maybe...

There is a new Tuber coming from Milwaukee.. ; ) Maybe that will convince you to trade. Demo that new XR1200 when she finally hits the states.

Don't try to put it together in a half-arsed manor, you won't be happy with it. Take your time, do it right and fall in love with your M2 all over again.

Rainman's idea of getting a Blast in the mean time is a good one. They are great little bikes for the money and have a very high smile to cost ratio.

If that's the bike... I like the overall industrial look, very Mad Max-ish. I'm not thrilled with the subframe being hacked, but it's yourbike and it's reversable...

I want an X1...

The light switch is just that... a switch for the light. It turns the headlight on and off.

When my wife saw me cutting off the back seat she said "So I won't be able to ride with you again?". I told her I needed some alone time.

When mine said " I'm not getting on a bike again until the kids are in college, I had a Hex key in my hand 1 minute later, the Rear Peg sets off 5 minutes after that and a Corbin solo seat ordered 10 minutes after that. She said " how come every time I put my foot down , you spend a couple of hundred dollars?" I said " It's pennies compared to the cost I would pay being reminded you were not there by that big empty seat!" I made my own dinner for a week.

Very cool looking bike : )

I pretty much know what I have to do, but I don't want to make the decision myself. I need to hear it from others.

I hate decisions like this too. When you say you know what you "have to do", you mean you really should rebuild/fix things? If so, don't slap it back together, it'll cause more heartache somewhere down the track.

Now that the Ez-out is out, does it *need* new rings and/or pistons? How many miles has it got?

My 2 cents - You want to ride, so shop around like hell to get the best prices you can on parts you need for the engine, talk to people here and work out if isolators etc really need changing, scrounge the $$$ for parts from wherever you can... then, the important bit, set a date that you want to have it back on the road by. Then get to work! : )
