I noticed that my belt is starting to lose small chunks at 15,000 miles. How many people have switch to chains? What don’t you like about them? If I decided to, where can I get a chain conversion? |

Did you really start ANOTHER thread about this? Not trying to be a jerk but there have got to be 20 threads here that a quick search would bring up... |

Every time I ride, I think the belt is going to snap and leave me stranded... so I've been closely watching it since I got my bike... 8 years ago. It's been almost 50,000 miles of worry and fret so far... |

I'll be serious for a sec, Thumper, do you have your (belt) guard(s) in place? Just curious after looking at your profile. |

I have a shaft drive on the wife's wrecked Kaw. I do run the factory belt guards. I'm starting to notice some fraying and small chunks. I'm trying to plan ahead here, the local dealer isn't reliable and doesn't listen for crap. It's not cracked, etc. I don't think it'll just strip the teeth off. I like the idea of being able to get a 530 chain at any motorcycle shop/dealer in the country if I were to need it. |

I put a Baker chain kit on my M2. After 10,000 miles, I went back to a belt. I prefer belts. Chains need constant lubing and frequent adjustments. They also make a mess when they sling lube all over the place. If I were racing, a chain would make sense because it's easier to change gearing, but on the street, a belt is much better. I won't even consider putting a chain on my XT. |

I really haven't had to adjust mine, it is just the lubbing and mess |

My S1 has had over 100rwhp and 90ft lbs since the 1000 mile mark on odometer... and 130hp and 110 ft lbs for over half its life... I have never run belt guards and the bike now has 16k on it... My stock belt and stock miracle clutch are still going strong! A few track days, a few strip days, many road trips and a whole lot of back road blitzing. It is nearly impossible to not be "in it" on this bike. I am a believer in belts... unless you need to change ratios often... (Message edited by torqd on August 27, 2008) |

Thump, I have been through three belts now, or should I say I'm preparing to put on My third belt. Of course everything comes off, I unbolt the stuff needed then lower my motor in back shuffel the new belt in and put it back togather { a putty knife works super to work the frame onto the isolastic mounts }. The thing with a belt like Crusty says is the lube mess. I think a quality o-ring chain and WD40 would get you by, the WD is my choice for shorties, easy to clean of with just a hose usually. Yes ofcourse real chain lube is better, but messy. With the belt, the change time is about 2 hours for Me. I also had to buy a $170.00 belt and tell the HD dealer that a Sporty belt would work, drive there and back. ALL frikin hassels, that I'm getting tired of. If my belt even as much as squeeks, I'm going to the CHAIN. heres the thing, youll spend three and a half for the conversion and two belt changes will cover that in cost, Thats if you do it YOURSELF. So, yea, I'd go chain ! |
