Digger...

leave the front porch light on!!!!

I have the same problem... only one kid is brave enough to knock on my door each Halloween. Most of the others are too afraid to stop. It might have something to do with the fact I stake the first out in the front yard... and I guess all the screaming and crying scares off the rest!!!

Bomber...

Cool... I am having problems finding a store with 30 dozen eggs this late in the day. They aren't left over from Easter are they???

Keith,
Pheasant season goes thru Jan 10th but Nov,Dec are best months to hunt. Let me know when you want to come up.
I think you can buy a 3 day lic but don't know for sure.

Does anyone know of a brand of arrow that are not drawn to every twig in the woods like a magnet
I missed one of the biggest bucks of my life yesterday.
28 yard shot, the deer was clueless that I was there. I came to full draw, put the 25 and 30 yard pins on him and pulled the trigger on the release. My arrow(of course) hit the only twig between me and the deer and the arrow went low. Damn!
When I went back to my stand last night I took the pole saw along and took care of the twigs once and for all, I hope!

Ride to the edge!

Heavier arrows deflect off branches less, but they also travel a little slower, which some people misconstrue as having a larger trajectory arc, and then there are the types of blades you are using as some do better in the brush than others. Do a search for Washington State bowhunters and see if you can find a discussion group talking about what they use west of the Cascades in Washington, Oregon, and northern California.

And you realize that as soon as you cut a shooting lane through the trees then that will be the one place in the whole forest that the deer won't go through.

Hang in there, if you missed he may come back, but not if you put the scent of fresh sawdust in the air.
;)

Ahhh, the power of Koolaid!
Maybe I'll give that a try.
I even said my "Ted Nugent, Spirit of the wild" prayer before I shot!

Bullets! That's a good one Bomber!
If you remember, and I know it's hard to do, but the ones I shot with bullets burnt up.

Well just an update.
Last night I got to my stand a little late, I took my lovely wife out for lunch. Anyways, it was 3:30 when I climbed into my stand. About 4:00 I see 2 deer on the other side of the creek(go figure),I watch them for about a half an hour trying to lure them to my side using a doe bleat call, no such luck, they wander off the other direction.

At 4:30 I see 2 more, on my side of the creek but about 70 yards away, they are heading on a path that is not going to bring them past my stand. I call a few times and finally the smaller of the two heads my way! I wait, and wait and wait. He is now about 20 yards away but behind some really thick brush so I can't get a shot. I wait some more, calling a couple more times to him. He finally decides to come back out of the thick stuff and sees my decoy. He is checking it out but will not come any closer. I want him as close as possible(since I've already missed 6 deer with my bow this year) for a nice clean shot. He steps behind a tree, I stand up, we comes a little closer, a little closer, now he's a mere 13 yards away! I wait for him to go behind another big tree, I draw my bow, he hangs up behind the tree for what seems like an hour but really was only about 5 minutes. Finally he steps out, he's looking at the decoy, I put the 15 yard sight pin on him and squeeze the trigger on my release. The deer turns and runs off with his tail down, a good sign!
I sit back down, light up a smoke and wait. OK I can't wait any more! I unhook my safety belt and climb down. I go to my arrow, which is sticking in the ground. It is covered with blood! COOL! I get back in my stand to wait for the 30 minutes you should give any big game animal before you go after it.

I get out my cell phone and call Chris, my hunting partner's son to have him bring the pickup when he gets off work.
I call my wife and tell her I'm going to be late.

At 5:15 I get down out of the tree and start to track my deer. He has left a good blood trail for me to follow but it's getting dark and I only have a small pen light with me(my spotlight is back in my truck, a mile away) I start to have trouble following the trail. I stand up to give my back a rest and, there the deer is! About 25 yards ahead of me, he didn't make it 50 yards and was already dead when I first got down to get my arrow. I thank the "Spirit of the Wild" for my harvest.

I get out the knife that Bomber gave me and go to work to get him gutted before Chris gets to the woods with the truck.

So, things are looking up for me again now. I have 2 tags to go but have broken the ice with my bow now. First deer I have gotten with this one!
We are going back out Sunday to try and harvest some more. I can smell those backstraps cooking already!

Ride to the edge!
I have backstraps now!

Dave...

Congrats... great luck... hopefully Sunday you will finish for the season. Other than deer summer sausage, I really don't like deer meat... but I guess it is an acquired taste.

HOWEVER... I love a good steak. I need some advise... do you think a rifle in caliber .450 Marlin would be to destructive for medium game?

A couple of miles past my mothers place is a pasture with a couple of heifer I have spotted that are about the right size to fit in the back of the mini van. That would set me for the winter with steaks.

I figured I would pull off on to the shoulder... and have my son out near the fence with a plastic pail with some grain in it... I would signal him when I had the rifle resting solidly on the window ledge and have him start shaking the bucket.

I was wanting something to mount in addition to having the meat... but I may have trouble dragging the bull I saw in to my mini-van... them horns would look good in my bike shop on the wall...

What do ya think... I also have a .223 and a slug gun... I wait for your advise!!!

Great story Dave..I should be out getting out of my stand right now...decided to lay low at home & rest...sides it's tough getting up at o-dark thirty when you get off work & in bed at 1:00 AM!

I haven't had any come real close yet, tried calling a buck last week that I could hear grunting in some thick foilage, but he wasn't interested then. Make some good jerky out of that meat too..that's my favorite!

I think a 450 would be about right for those cows!

Rattler,
Get out there, one thing is for sure, you won't shoot any sitting at home.

Hunting update.
Went out yesterday with 2 friends. Got in the stands about 5:20am
Getting cold here in Iowa so I was all bundled up for a long wait. Wasn't too bad til it started to rain/sleet!
About 8am I see one of my partners trucks driving along the edge of the field. Now this guy will sit in the worst weather and is very dedicated so I know he must have shot one!
I'm sitting there getting wetter and colder by the minute, thinking I'm not going to see anything.
About 5 minutes later I see 5 doe crossing the creek about 50 yards away and they are headed my way!
I grab my bow off it's hook and get stood up, they are working their way along the creek bank. I "guess" that they are going to turn and come in front of me. Guess again Dave! They continue along the creek bank until the one I wanted to shoot is behind me. Now for those of you that deer hunt, you'll understand, for the rest of you, when deer come in a group it just increases your chances of getting "busted". Five deer means 10 eyes and 5 noses to see or smell you and blow the whole thing.
I'm already committed to shooting on the wrong side of the tree for the biggest one but am more than willing to shoot the next biggest.
I come to full draw without getting caught and as the second one comes to about 10 yards from my stand I give her a little grunt to stop her and send the arrow on it's way. It's a pretty good hit, almost a pass thru, as she runs under my stand and off into the woods I can see the arrow just barley hanging on in her, on the far side.
I wait for a while, have a smoke, then climb down. I can't find any blood!
I follow the trail; she was on for 100 yards, still no blood. Now I'm getting worried,a deer that isn't leaving a blood trail is very hard to recover and I know it's a killing shot.
I decide to go get Chris, two sets of eyes are better than one when you are tracking a deer.

I go to the truck and Chris is all happy cause he has shot a pretty nice 8 point buck and it's already in the back of the truck!

I tell him I have one hit and we go back to my stand to pick up it's trail.
I find my arrow but still no blood.
We follow the way they ran, no blood, no blood. I am now about 200 yards form my stand and have found nothing but some tracks in the mud.
I decide to press on a little farther( I am stubborn) I go about another 50 yards and there she is, dead!
Good thing it was a morning hit and not right before dark.

So, a great day of hunting, 3 of us in the woods, we shoot 2 deer. No more empty freezer for me!

PS
This is the first deer I've shot with my new Ted Nugent blades and I am very impressed. My broadhead went right thru the shoulder blade and you can't tell it has ever even been shot, it's even still sharp! These went on all my arrows before I went out in the afternoon.
3 of us didn't see one single deer all afternoon.

Ride to the edge!
Dave
