Look at this guy. Selling ECM spy cables and the program, He even includes some maps, I hope He developed them himself and is not stealing from someone else. This is what the group discussed last winter when Ecmspy came to our collective attention. I wonder if his map includes Treadmarks square idle, If it does shouldn't tread get some $$$$$$. Since he says he has an X! where did he get the xb maps???? Sounds like he stole them. Intellectual property rights and all. sharing them is one thing but selling them is bad mojo.

At least he tells you that the program is free.

Think of ECMSpy fuel mapping as open source programming.

Everyone owns the mapping. No one owns the mapping.

The real value is the cable. Use the maps or don't, but nothing happens without the cable.

Since Buell isn't producing the Race ECM eny more, there isn't any loss of revenue there.

Isn't ECMSpy a free download?

Looks pretty legit to me when I read it. He is pretty explicit about the software being free.

I would question if he is trying to give away maps that others have developed or are selling, but I don't see that in the listing. He may just have stock maps, doesn't say one way or the other.

looks like he is just selling the cable to me. I dont see any thing wrong with that. If i had a FI bike i would consider buyin one as aposed to trying to make my own and possibly screwing it up along with my bike.

I'm a electronics guy I did the math... More power to them..

I thought about making enough to pay for mine and some friends but cost wise its slim..

I priced materials it ranged from 30-40 dollars per piece, Not including shipping

You can't get every thing from one place that I know off..

Materials and time it was to much of an investment to make 15-25 dollars per unit..

I am going to make one soon for a Palm Treo and yes I have no plans to sell them..

I will show how to do it..

So it is perfectly fine to redistribute the software. I am out of touch or maybe my sense of right and wrong is out of kilter.

I hope he throws the software author some bones for his effort and to maintain the website.

Yes, ECMspy is freeware. Its no different than giving a friend something you got for free.

This whole EMC/SPY/KEY thing upsets me. I can reset the clock with the push of a button on my Buells. Why should I have to buy a bunch of proprietary stuff to do a TPS reset or change a map value myself? It's not like it's a perfect system and Ducati or somebody is going to pirate it and use it on their production bikes. The whole thing starts at the mfg level, be it Ford, Chevy or Buell. I doubt EPA has much to do with it or access would be impossible/illegal. Build it and then deny access ...unless the owner spends some gouge bucks. I see no reason it can't be made to be accessed with nothing more than a CAT 5 cable, a computer and a free program from Buell....talk about customer satisfaction. Hey, idea. Make the clock only accessible at the dealer level. Get $70.00 twice a year to reset the clock for daylight savings time or resets for battery replacements.............

The only thing you might have to pay for is the cable which you can make yourself.

ECMSpy is freeware. If the designer desires to charge for it, then redistribution of the software without paying royalties would be piracy and would be illegal.

He is simply packaging something he made with something you could get for free but would have to look for or create yourself.

The parts look to cost about $30-40. Shipping is what, $5? So let's call it $45 on the high side.

If it took you 3 hours to put together all that he has packaged at minimum wage, the $17 difference was worth it.

Were the guy selling pirated versions of the White album or something, I think you'd have reason to complain.

If I was going to sell cables with the software as a package, free ware or not I would throw Gunter some $$$. If I find it useful I probably will throw him some bones for my personal use.

Just showing my appreciation.

He's not selling cables with software.

The only thing actually being "sold" is the cable itself.

He's just supplying some software free of charge (as it should be) when you buy the cable from him. Think of as as either an incentive to buy from him or as an act of kindness.

It doesn't seem any different to me than coming here and getting a map from a fellow BadWeBer free of charge.

Though I never would because I'm just computer savy enough to really fudge things up so I tread not into ecmspy territory : )

I would get ECMspy if it worked on an iPhone. Does it? I can't easily wheel the bike into the computer room. And I don't have a laptop. iPhone would be the only possibility. Otherwise I will be using the race ECM still.

EPA?

If they pulled you over, did an emmissions test and found your bike to be out of compliance with the stated emmissions standard for your bike - then yes you would be riding an unroadworthy bike and liable for whatever fines thay had to give you as well as the transport dept breaches.

Not illegal to modify it and use it as long as it is not used on a public road where registration is required.

if its stolen intellectual property, the rights owner can report it through eBay's VeRO program (Verified Rights Owner). here's a link http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/programs-vero-ov.htm l

8 million parts listings live at any time = some bad eggs

I doubt EPA has much to do with it or access would be impossible/illegal.

It is illegal to tamper with emission systems. That is why performance parts come with that waiver/warning that says "for race use only". The ECM is part of the emission system, which is why you(the consumer) are not enabled to make changes to it when you buy it. Technically, using ECM Spy to change fuel maps is tampering, but motorcycles are not emission tested in most areas so enforcement would be almost impossible.
