I stopped into my dealership on the way home tonight, curious to see if they had the new CR yet. Nah, didn't expect it, but it was on the way...

Still saw a curious sight though.

They finally moved the 1125 from the back wall to the front of the store where you could see that it existed.

In its' place along the back wall were five peculiar trade-ins.

a GSXR

an FZR

a CBR

a Hyabusa

and a Ducati

I've seen a metric or two traded in there now and then. But never FIVE at a time!

Were all 5 trade ins for Buells or were some for Harleys?

Ironic that those type of bike riders labeled my Thunderstorm engine 'prehistoric' but now find themselves riding Dinosaurs.

The era of the 300kph streetbike is closing.

Speed detection equipment and policy, and the exercise is self-restraint that is needed to keep a licence has made 'em a bit of a pain.

Who knows. Significant either way.

Part of it is the natural migration of young men on their crotch rockets to more "sensible" modes of 2-wheels. Also a factor, I think, is the price of gasoline now compared to a year ago. The Buells and Hogs get great mileage.

On today's ride there were more big twin Harleys than anything else, combined, out there on the highways. There is a reason for this. The Harleys are reliable motorcycles with a timeless heritage about them. Hey, almost every Harley rider waved at my Italian motorcycle! The times are changin'!

The Buells show slick engineering in a fun package. Very well thought out. I'll be back in the fold when Buell releases a smaller XB or an updated Blast.

I can get my tired old Buell up to speeds fast enough to lose my license and do so, often.

Maybe it is finally occurring to everyone that a really fun bike with 15% more capabilities then you will ever be able to exploit, is better choice then a draining and uncomfortable bike with 50% more capabilities then you will ever be able to use.

Or maybe a 300 KPH bike is finally recognized for what it is, a fairly shallowly entertaining one trick pony. I wouldn't mind having a bike that would go fast, but I would not compromise handling or ergodynamics or fuel economy to do it... or want to pay much extra for it. Its just not that big a deal...

but not in first gear, and not so quickly.

Dave stated pretty well.

When I ride my 10r it is all about self-control and the bike tempting me.

If I am on a two lane road and need to pass on the buell I have to think, "can I" where as on the 10r it is more like, "should I?"
The rate of acceleration is insane and with around 13k redline, I'm not likely to run out of steam.

Always more in reserve is kind of nice, and knowing that I have more than I need tends to make me not care if someone does pass me trying to instigate a race.

The buell on the other hand is fun around town, fine on the highway, brings smiles when the road is beat up or gravel.

The Uly sure does tempt wheelies and stoppies though, and an occasional jump.

I've seen 2 C6 Corvettes (at 450HP or whatever) traded in on Porsches the last month. Folks are reporting they dig the handling over the awesome power.

Those are all good points, and it's great news that people are trading up (yes, I think it's UP) for Buells or Harleys.

And I don't know about your particular dealership, but I know that dealers overall seem to be more interested in taking non-Harleys as trades now. A lot of dealers used to just, well, not take them. (Not us, we take just about anything. We do draw the line at livestock though. Gotta have limits.)

I guess dealers are finally realizing that it's a GOOD thing when someone wants to trade Jap stuff in. : ) We've taken the same Jap bike in two times on more than one occasion. People need a bike to kick around on, and then trade up on.

I think it's awesome.

I think Harley dealers are realizing that ALL used bikes are a great source of revenue if the deal is done right. So you will see this more often in dealerships. They probably will make more profit in % terms on the resales of those bikes.

Before if something like that was traded in they would call the local Jap dealer and sell it to them sometime below the trade in value.

By having them in the store they make a definite statement they are will to take trades as well vs we would never think about it.

Livestock, disgruntled ex's and under age children; all non trade items.

We used to not take scooters, but with the quick turn of cash on those to the wholesaler, we will take those too.

My local HD dealer is running a radio ad for great deals on used metric bikes. They must be taking more that a few in on trade. Variety is the spice of life
