interesting. i had read this about her a few years ago. a friend of mine's mother was OSS during the war. she has passed now, would loved to heard her stories. a book - a man called intrepid - made into a movie, told w. donovans'& the OSS story. very good reading |

Except Julia Child's role was not as urban legend would have it; 'twas more administrative. Nothing as dramatic as being a "secret agent" would imply. Don't mean to downplay ANY administrative role in ANY way. HUGE administrative support was required for all the military (and paramilitary) operations. She was able to find direction in her life after a kind of youthful aimless wandering through college (Brokaw: The Greatest Generation - I remember reading it somewhere but am too lazy to go look it up) Valerie Plame had a more exotic role up until... oh, never mind. Plame is a joke. It's not a covert opp when your husband writes an editorial on the topic for the New York Times. |

Furthermore, Plame worked at Langley when she was "outed", which is hardly a secret installation. |

Again, Nothing at all wrong with admin work. Its' just that Julia Child WAS employed by OSS but didn't do any field work (though she tried) Of course, you can say that OF COURSE she would deny doing fieldwork. She was as much a field operative as Ms Plame. The outing of Plame WAS a felony. The fact that no charges stuck against Rove for the "outing" and Novak for publication is criminal in itself. Now, WHAT was the subject? Who was the jerk that brought Plame into this??? Where's my smiley????? (Message edited by slaughter on August 14, 2008) |

During her service Julia concocted a very effective shark repellent. |

Plame was, no matter how you slice it, and whether or not you like it, a soldier. Flipping her was treasonous, period. We all know who did it, and , likely, why. The "Why" doesn't matter, one iota, but treason warrants the firing squad, in my book. |

In this case, I'm in agreement with the Trampmeister. NOBODY has a right to make public ANY sensitive material in ANY form. There are requirements (and TONS of paperwork) for the smallest "inadvertent disclosure" and yet a DELIBERATE disclosure gets buried? I'm ashamed and embarrassed to see that having happened. I'm also tickled that celebrities such as Julia Child performed LEGITIMATE duties during THE War. Many others are well known to have served in many capacities. Hell, Eddie Albert's account of piloting a landing craft delivering Marines to the shores of Tarawa is harrowing. Jack Palance being nearly burned to death... Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin. SOUPY SALES on the beach at Normandy! And everybody's "HERO" John Wayne was able to have his attorneys keep him out of combat in order to do his film work. OK, yeah, propoganda films are as much a part of the war effort as combat but sheeesh. I still think it's cool that Julia Child goes much deeper than her stockpot!!. |

Outing a spy should be a criminal act, no question. If I were Joe Wilson, I would have either accepted the mission, made my report, and kept my mouth shut... or I would have declined the mission, decided if the risk of exposing my "spy" wife and jeapordizing her career was worth the cost of exercising my free speech rights, and only then started the newspaper editorials. But maybe thats just me. (Here is the latest article by the way... http://www.philly.com/inquirer/world_us/20080706_I raq_s_nuclear__yellowcake__moved_to_Canada.html) |

I'm glad we all agree that the state dept. guy who talked to Novak should have been investigated. Richard Armitage right? Cool about Child. |

" If I were Joe Wilson... " You're not, neither am I. Vapid conjecture about the assignment of jobs in that sector means nothing, coming from either of us. " IF I were the king of the world... Tell you what I'd do..." -RIP Hoyt} |
