So I'm at my local Fleet Farm last night looking for winshield wipers for my truck (the old lady is getting pissy about not being able to see out her side when it rains) and I run into a guy wearing the grey/black Buell mechanic's "STAFF" jersey and I ask...."are you an Elf?".. Thinking I'm all cool by using some inside lingo.

Him: "Huh?, excuse me? what the hell are you talking about?"

Me: "you know, an Elf who brings us Buell guys the toys"

Him: "I don't deliver toys, I'm an engineer at Juneau Ave."

Me: "Sorry man, didn't mean to offend you, what do you engineer?"

Him: "Accessories"

Me: "aahhh, thanks for the cool saddle and trunk bags for my XB, keep up the good work"

Him: "No problem, enjoy your bike"

Me: "I'm not crazy (you couldn't tell by the look on his face), if you get a chance, read "25 years of Buell", you'll see what I mean.

I was shocked...I thought they all knew they were Elves! Somebody at Buell please put out a memo?

Buellinachinashop,

Elfdom comes from within. Usually after many months/years of burning the late night oil to support a cause.

I can't speak for your run-in from Juneau Ave. but if he doesn't know what an elf is he prolly wouldn't understand anyway.

I just assumed that at the new Buell employee orientation meeting they layed this all out.

Thanks Jb.

Elves cannot be created at employee orientations. They just happen. If you are trying to be an elf than you will likley not become one.

Hmmmm,
then I wonder, could one be an elf without working for Buell but doing Buell orientated things like an elf would?

If I were any good at photoshop, I'd create an appropriate picture of Will Farrell from the movie "Elf".

I had my Team Elves shirt on while flying to California. A passenger asked me if I worked for Keebler. I said that I don't think those elves ride motorcycles.

What's all this about elves?
Some do ride motorcycles, and I SWEAR they were red Boxers before they got into the wash!

Keebler rejected me (licking the chocolate off the back of the grahams is apparently frowned upon...), so I picked up a new gig...

Bad Elf

BTW, where can I get a "Team Elves" shirt?

>>>Elves cannot be created at employee orientations. They just happen. If you are trying to be an elf than you will likley not become one.

That is very accurate.

The history of the term "Buell Elf" is one of the finer stories. I was nearly subjected to disciplinary action and sternly admonished to "not refer to Buell employees as Elves" . . the logic, as explained to me, was that it would erode self-esteem.

In a true "Elf" quite the opposite occurs.

There are Elves at Juneau, Franklin, PDC, Capital Drive, KC and in PA. But they are largely undercover Elves.

Sometimes they, for fleeting moments, become visible in places like Bonneville . . . where they congregate under assumed names, quickly break Land Speed Records and disappear into the woodwork.

One of the "True Elves" learned, while vacationing in the Carolinas recently, just how extensive the network is.

Yes Virginia, there are Elves.

>>>>They are in the most unlikely places.

That's for certain . . . . taking Ulysses across the Earth's most forbidden terrain as a group of Elves (HQ's in Dubai) set out from Cairo to Cape Town . . . . an Italian Buell owner stranded along side the Autostrada during August with all the dealerships closed is suddenly greeted by a Buell tech from Barcelona asking "may I be of help?". . . a Blast gets tipped over in Moscow and a clutch lever appears 2 days later wrapped in a TEAM ELVES t-shirt. . . . a contingent of United States Armed Forces personnel receives a "We're always thinking of you" package full of AMERICAN MADE MOTORCYCLES shirts and reading . . . and a secret contingent of Elves implements a program to send duplicate Buell goodies, one set overseas to be wadded up, stuck in a pocket and carried in combat while a pristine set waits at home, to American Marines. . . . Buell racers are standing in the pits at a race when a stranger walks up, hands them a check and thanks them for proudly representing Buell. The amazing part is that not one segment of this is known by, originated at, sanctioned by or approved my any "official" source but is well supported by a host of "Elves".

The Elves Know and The Elves Go.

Buell is an amazing company and, like an iceberg, only the tip is visible.
