Somehow my HDMI ports broke, they're fragile, so I had Best Buy Service come out to replace them (they had to replace the whole input board). Now I'm having an issue and I can't determine if its my Cable provider or my tv. My cable box (Time Warner) says HDTV (we susbscribe to the hd channels) and 480P. Is that 480P being broadcast by Time Warner or is that what the cable box is sending to my TV because that's all the tv capable of? Is the tv supposed to be upconverting to 720? I also noticed when playing "21" last night through my XBOX 360 that the resolution was 480...normal? The resolution on the tv is terrible, nowhere close to 720I. Blurry and streaky. I'm also getting an error when using the HDMI input for HDTV that says...."your tv does not allow display of this program through the DVI input source. Please choose another input source" I'm thinking the Geek Squad screwed up something....thoughts? | ||

I'm thinking the Geek Squad screwed up something also. What TV? Check the manual on how to manually set the resolution (it should do it automatically) then set the XBox to the highest your TV will accept (which I think is 1080i). You might also try component cables from either the XBox or Cable (cable box will take normal component cables, the XBox needs the "component set") which will eliminate HDMI as a problem. Thanks Josh, Its a Phillips tv I ought in Feb. The resolution when playing a game in XBOX is 720 which maxes out my TV's resolution. Now I just tried my upconverting DVD player with the HDMI cable and it won't even bring up a picture. Soooo, Best Testi is getting a call. I was running cables after the hdmi ports dumped and didn't have a problem. No I can't get past the 480P resolution with the cables,so I'm thinking the board they replaced is bad. | ||

I'm betting wrong board. If it's an older model board that got substituted accidentally, it wouldn't be able to "upconvert" beyond it's capacity. If you can't get picture from either the HDMI or the Component cables, I'd say that's your problem. Enhanced definition should be at 480P and is what is generally broadcast by "digital cable". Most of your HD channels are going to be in 720P with a few in 1080i and none (unless you have the new Dish package) are going to be in 1080P. From your cable company 480P is correct if you are looking at "regular" channels with 720P or 1080i being the "HD" channels. Good luck. I'd suggest you ask them to verify that the card that they installed has a native resolution that matches your TV. | ||

My tv usually says "720P" when I tune into my hd channels. its stuck on 480, as is my upconverting dvd player when using components cables. Best Buy isn't the Best Service I'm guessing. Somebody has some 'Splain'n to Do Lucy. | ||

John, I had the same problem setting my TV up when I bought it months ago with the Time Warner HD box. Its in the settings of the cable box not your HDMI cable or components cables. Review your cable box settings. | ||

Thanks Dana, you were right with some of this problem. Seems like with the new card, the cable box defaulted back to 480. I'm running is wide open at 1080 and its clean and sharp. Next issue is the hdmi not working right. | ||

So, being a rational thinker, but more importantly being lucky enough to realize that the tv and the devices on it defaulted back to factory settings, I went into the tv settings themselves and set my hdmi inputs as (HDMI1)..DVD and (HDMI2)..HD Reciever...whhhhooolllaaa...my hdmi ports are working perfectly! Lesson: DO NOT LET YOUR HUGE FINGERED ROOMMATE PLAY WITH THE HDMI PORTS Lesson 2: If you have work done on your HD tv set, be ready to go back into your tv settings and your cable box setting to adjust everything. I also had to redo my color/picture settings as well. NONE of my custom settings held up. Thanks, Buellinahdtvshop | ||

Sorry John, went to bed after my last post to you. I could of given you my TV settings and they would have been the same. But glad I could help. I was about to put my foot through the screen when setting mine up.LOL | ||

I think the box upscales it to what ever you set. Every channel is broadcast differently. Check the box. | ||

Actually, it can if you set it to "auto". It'll jump around in resolutions to what's needed. I'm forcing it in "manual" to run 1080. | ||

chinashop. Your upconverting DVD player cannot upconvert above 480P if you use component cables. This is a technically limitation but a requirement of the CSS spec. So if using upconvert always use HDMI or the like. There are some players that you can turn off HDCP and get around the upconvert issue or so I am told using component. | ||
