Wouldn't you know it, only the 3rd time I've ever ridden w/o a lid and a cager decides she wants my lane more than I do and knocks me out of it. I came out much better than the bike, road rash on my hips, left forearm, right hand, forehead and nose. Also sprained wrist and pulled groin. Very lucky if I do say so myself. ATGATT from here on out, I swear. I see a new Buell in my future. Now I just have to decide which one. Will posts some pics of the carnage (myself and the bike) when I get them on my computer to downsize.

This just re-enforces what I already do. Full gear before I go anywhere. Glad to hear you are in such good shape.

Did the driver stop? If so what did they have to say?

A couple of ATGATT quotes:

Dress for the slide, not the ride

I would rather sweat than bleed

Glad you are okay

Unfortunately the Soccer Mommy changing lanes without looking is a world wide problem.

See it multiple time a day on the 60 mile round trip commute to work in the Charlotte NC Area. Most of the drivers think they are auditioning for a ride in NASCAR as they drive to and from work in their safe cocoon of a vehicle.

Hell, we had a local Cop pull that stunt on us last week at an on ramp for I 85. He just came over without even looking in the mirror or over his left shoulder. Luckily there was a third lane that was vacant that we could use to keep from getting run down.

We ride ATGATT, Olympia AirGlide in HiViz, white helmet, Yellow Motolights, 55 W fog and Driving lights, more light than a 747 landing at Charlotte Douglas Airport, and the Cop still comes over.

Glad you are relatively o.k. I had the same thing happen last April and it was a hit and run. Fortunately someone got the license and description of the vehicle. I had all my gear on but ended up with two broken ribs. They got the guy but are not prosecuting, not enough evidence and the three witnesses are shy. However, I have a lawyer. I never thought I would be the leatigeous type, but he ran. Still working out the settlement.

Did the person who hit you stop? Anyway glad you are o.k.

be good

I've literally yelled at people for "sharing" my lane. I don't think it's ok for a vehicle to be that close to me; illegally taking up half my lane to gain a position in slow traffic. Funny how much these A-holes will defend their position.

Good thing you made it o.k. I'd consider that one a pass and wouldn't try pushing luck or tempting fate again.

Reading these posts make me worry about an existing intersection by my house that was recently "updated". Major traffic flows N and S on US98. A bank was just built on the N side. Now imagine 15-20 cars waiting in the N bound left turning lane and a few in the S bound left turning lane. When you have that many cars lined up N bound, the S bound turning lane can't see squat. Do they wait until they can see? NO...hence the last six months this "updated" intersection has caused dozens of accidents. You would think the county would change that turning lane light from green to a RED ARROW. You can bet your ass if/when I'm involved in an accident there, the county will be getting the lawsuit...not the driver. These county engineers get paid damn good money and you would think after the number of accidents that have occurred there they would fix it.

Sorry I haven't posted with more info before now, too much pain and or Vicadin to type properly. Thanks for all your well wishes. I do realize how blessed I was to get through this one. My dad is a Methodist minister and he and mom have had us in their daily prayers since the day we got our bikes. I have thanked them and the Lord many time over since the accident.

To answer some of the questions asked. The driver did stop and of course said she was sorry and that she didn't see me. I told her she has to look to see, of course there were more than a few 4 letter words thrown in because I was so pissed. Actually she was lucky that I wasn't weary a helmet because I'm sure I would have thrown it at her. She is a nurse and on her way to work. In fact it happened right in front of the hospital. Only a 50 yard walk to the E.R. doors.

I seem to have lost my software for downsizing the pics. Is someone willing to let me send them you so you downsize for me and post them here it will be greatly appreciated.

After the settlement I am buying new gear before a bike and I will were every time. I especially like the quote "I'd would rather sweat than bleed".

Last February, I nailed a deer at 55mph and went flying. When I stopped sliding (mostly on my back) I got up, walked over to my Uly, picked it up, talked to some witnesses, and waited for the cops. My Olympia AST jacket and pants were pretty messed up, there were scuffs on my armored gauntlets, a scuff on the back of my helmet, and scuffs on my boots. I was sore for awhile and had a cut on my thigh, but that's it. I know I was incredibly lucky, but the gear literally saved my skin.

I went right home and ordered another AST jacket (and a new helmet), but I keep the old one to look at from time to time.

You have to do it...otherwise you're just gambling. I tell this story because there was NOTHING I could have done about it...no way to have prevented it...I just needed to be dressed for it. None of us know if/when a deer or another animal will pop out of the woods. Frankly, I'm more scared of that concept than I am of other drivers!

Oh, and the cops gave me one of the deer's antlers right before I rode home (that's right, the Buell was still ridable!).

With mesh gear you don't need sweat. I wear mesh even on 100 degree day. It is hotter than a tank top but it is bearable while moving. Joe Rocket Phoenix, this is the third season for it worth every penny I paid for it.

Ask WolfRidge what he thinks of mesh gear though. And his wipe out was NOT at high speed (the mesh just tore and exposed his skin to the asphalt.)

Mesh is better than nothin though, that's for sure!

Glad to hear you came out alright.

Just last week I was beginning to question wearing a jacket riding to work and back in these 90 degree days, since work is just 2 miles from home. Then as I sat at a red light I hear screeching and a SLAM, and I look in my mirror to see the car directly behind me getting rearended and lunging towards me. He must have stopped with tons of room between us, because he jumped forward and still wasn't too close to me. It was pure luck though. 80% of the time the cars stop so close to me that if they get bumped... they'll hit me.

So now I continue to wear my jacket everyday to work.

Yes, 99+% of the time you don't need your gear. But do you know which time you WILL? I don't.

My FirstGear Killamanjaro Air jacket offers nearly as much ventalation as a mesh jacket, with all the protection of a traditional ballistic nylon jacket, FWIW.

It's only hot now because I am always wearing a back protector.

Wolfs mesh gear was the crap that came from vanson. Single layer not very heavy and yep it got tore up.

Take a look at other vendor, rocket, first gear, fieldsheer and I bet their are a bunch more.

My mesh jacket has two layers and armour on the back, shoulders and forearms. Plus it has the gathers on the forearms to keep it in place while sliding.

I wear a leather Teknic roadrace jacket with no ventilation. The only downsides are having to keep hydrated...and peeling it off after a ride. It's survived a couple scraps with basically only some scratches and messed up logos on the forearms. There's a couple mesh jackets with leather-covered armor out there...or there's the mesh chassis jackets with hard armor. They're designed to go under jersey's for supermoto and such but I like the Mad-Max style. I'll be buying one or the other once I can afford it.

"I seem to have lost my software for downsizing the pics."

Go to the Pics forum and download the Irfanview software (it's free). It's a great package for resizing pics and is very easy to use. I got everyone in the last office I was working in using it on their workstations.

PLUS, the Irfanview latest version has a "Save to Web" feature that lets you set the file size.

That's very nice to get below the 70KB limit for the forum.

I'd encourage you to donate to Irfan himself.

Hey, I just noticed your name is Hardy and you teach HS math. I had a very influential math teacher in HS, Harold Hardy. I think he taught at the same HS for his entire career.

He was an outstanding educator... I'll never forget him. In retrospect, I see now he had the patience of Job teaching me math.

Well, I'm not too far behind Harold Hardy being within 10 years of possible retirement. Yeah, I knew I wanted to be a HS math teacher way back in 11th grade. Tried twice to leave the field but came back to the classroom.

I'll probably die there, unless a careless cage takes me out...

Glad to hear someone appreciating their math teacher.
