but it's not a Buell. We picked up a 2001 SV 650S and is he excited!!! He is set up for his class for 8/16-17. He has some experience on dirt bikes but not a lot.

Our plan is to only allow him to ride with us for the first summer or two until we feel he'll be responsible. But...at 19 almost 20, that might take a while I tried to talk him in to letting me have it for a track bike...NOT

Any helpful hints from those out there that have their youngins riding would be much appreciated?

Yes, keep him away from people his age. I only ride with older people, as they tend to be more responsible and about having a good ride, instead of seeing who can break mach 5 first.

My 19 almost 20 year old daughter got her mc licence a month ago. I made her take riders edge class and she did great.First couple of days we rode about 150 miles together. She now rides to work by herself any time she wants. She doesnt do much city driveing yet and no interstate. She rides a gs500 and my Buell sometimes. It is a great father daughter bonding exspearnce. The first time we rode together she had a grin ajax wouldnt take off.

I agree with your logic, I am about his age, and some of my riding buddies need to take it easier, because as most have found out, the street doesn't bite lightly.
I took the riders course, and man am I glad i did! i want to go back and take the advanced course, but talk about expensive!
anywho tell your boy, congrats and he will love it...
its only the best way to get around!

you should convince him to let you make it into a weekend track bike, they are very fun on the track!

Also owned a gs before I bought the bolt, and I would like to buy another GS, absolutely loved that bike.

Those "tube frame" SV's look so much better then the square framed ones...

+1 for the "managing peer riding experiences"... And personally I would think a training oriented track day sooner rather then later would forever make "going fast on the street" feel like a fairly lame exercise in taking stupid risks.

+1 on the dirt bike experience as well. It builds a ton of skills at low speeds under just about every imaginable condition, almost all of which translates really well to the street.

I also took an auto "defensive driving" class when I was 18 or so, required for a co-op job I took. That stuff sticks with me to this day, on the bike and off.

The Tube Framed SV's are nice bikes for sure.
The power delivery make them a great starter bike too.
Not that they're weak at all, they make great go fast bikes too.
One of the best Japanese bikes ever.

Congrats to your son!

My just turned 21yo just bought his first bike as well. Right now none of his friends have a MC, so he is riding with me and my old fart friends and also by himself. He took the MSF course as well, which was a good start, but I can tell his skills still need a lot of improvement. My fear is that he won't realize that. He dropped his bike a couple of weeks ago in a friends driveway, which I was actually happy in a way about. My hope is that it will keep him humble, at least a while longer.

MSF Class should help a lot....

If he rode some dirt like me in my youth..

Make sure the REAR BRAKE habit doesn't carry over..

Good Luck...

Dan, my hubby, and I are going to Vegas in October for Inside Pass Track day and Femmoto where the men CAN ride on the track on Fri. I'm hoping Skye can get off work to come with us so he can get his bike on the track for some lessons and experience.

Yea, the grin won't come off his face every time he gets on the bike. This is going to be a great family experience and hopefully many trips to come.

jumpin, a couple things i told my kids from the get go with riding was first, always remember that your invisible and no one out there can see you, so don't ever assume that someone does see you on the road and the second thing is when you come up to a car that wants to pull out on the street, never try to make eye contact, keep an eye on his front wheel. if you see it move prepare to take evasive action. my son sold his 636 to try and save some money and my daughter was using one of our bikes before she moved up to wisconsin so i don't have to worry about either one of them driving a bike for right now. tell him good luck with the class and even try to talk him into other courses when they and the money come available.

damnut, good looking boy you have there. looks like a chip off the old block.

I'm going to have trouble with him. Even at this young of an age he is intrigued with motorcycles. My girlfriend takes him to watch me leave on my bike when I leave for work. He's not afraid of it and when I put him on any bike he instantly puts his hands in the grips like he knows what he's doing.

I had to promise her that he can not get any kind of motorized motorcycle until he's 3. I asked her if she meant gas powered and she said yes. SOOOOOO that means that I can get him an electric bike and Tool Man Taylor it to make it go faster. Arg Arg Arg
