Very excellent analysis, Danny.

No surprise there!

Too many riders would have simply blamed the"dumb guy in the cage", without learning anything from the incident.

No surprise there, either!

Alright Danny, that'll be about enough!
Don't make me come down there!
Glad to hear you're alright.
You're too nice a guy, but you knew that already.
You're also like myself in that analyzing a situation takes over sometimes.
Every incident I'm involved in, or hear about I analyze until I'm satisfied.
Good to hear the outcome, and damn near unheard of that the driver gave you a ring to make sure you're alright.
Looking forward to Buelltober Fest II, it wouldn't be right without you there.
Now, keep an eye out!

glad you're ok, DJ!

...Good catch Denise, I would have hit the Bronco at over 35mph if she had not signaled Ferris to stop.

it takes many of the same skills to be a good passenger as it does to be a good rider (and it takes a buttload more courage).

D's skills as a rider and passenger saved several lives that day, of that i'm 100% convinced.

Carlos, thx for the public props for Denise - i'll be sure to point her towards this thread.

DJ, did i mention we're glad you're ok? :-):-)

Excellent description and analysis . . . . from your account I can easily visualize the scene developing and place myself in the cast doing precisely what you did.
doing
These are the types of common experiences where lots of us can learn and avoid from one persons experience.

Thank you.

Hehehehehe . . . . D is not only a skilled passenger, but I've seen her negotiate the twsities of Southern CA. . . . girl knows of what she speaks. She's taught Ferris well.

: )

DJ,

that is an amazing story on a number of levels.

First, that you and the other driver agreed without the aid of insurance companies or lawyers, despite the fact that you have an eye-witness. There are many people who would take advantage of that situation and try to get money out of the guy. People that can look at a situation with fairness and without greed are rare in these days of McDonald's hot coffee spilling on a lap lawsuits. I think the other driver does appreciate the fact that you have a conscience, evidenced by his call.

Second, that that's your first accident in 30 years! Most impressive!

Third, that you and your bike escaped relatively unharmed. You are a lucky man, indeed!

I've learned a good lesson here - its easy to see how it can happen. Thank you for sharing your story.

Ride safe and be good to one another,

Joanne

DJ, Was SO happy to see at the end of your report that you are okay. Have to admit when I first started reading my spine was crawling as we had been in the same situation just last weekend.
Carlos, thanks for the attagirl but you know, just as anyone who rides does, that it took excellent rider skills to pull off those emergent stops you three boyz did and someone was watching out for all of us.
Court, thanks. : ) (but that would be Ride Like Ferris course 600A for me)

This is clearly the driver fault. He started moving not seeing the opposite direction road behind the van. If you do not see the road behind the obstacle withing safe distance you can not do maneuver. He basically started the maneuver blindly. With same success he could just go thru the intersection without checking the traffic lite. If you can not see the road you have to stop and wait until you can check it within the safe distance. If the van would stayed there until read traffic lite blocking the view the driver at least had to wait the red traffic light signal before turning left and crossing opposite direction lanes.
