xb9er. Anything is possible. At the moment I know of no Known IPOD viruses, but that doesn't mean at some point there will not be one. I am sure that there are tons of people looking for exploits in mobile safar i and the underlying OS. That is how they where jailbroken in the first place. Technically anything that connects to a network or the like is vulnerable to being hacked/cracked/etc.. Some just more than others. The only hack proof computer is the one encased in a lead box not connected to anything : )

"can we get a virus on the ipods using the wifi?"

I don't think Jobs has made the enemies that Gates has. iPods are probably alot more safe than any Smart Phone running Windows Mobile.

Doon, do I just ask my bank what sort of security they run for this?

Buellinachinashop:

When you connect to the website you should see some sort of indication that it is using SSL. Normally indicated by a Padlock, but it is browser dependent. By clicking on the lock you should be able to get a copy of the certificate and who it was assigned to, etc..

Doon, they cracked the lead casement, now you have to seal it in concrete and drop it in a live volcano. ; )

Great info!

People don't crack microsoft because they hate microsoft anymore, its just business, and they are in it for the money. Apple has a better foundation, but are doing a pretty lousy job of getting security patches out in a timely fashion. They are not targeted as often because there are 10 Windows soft targets for every Mac soft target, but there are attacks out there in the wild.

Another good way to protect yourself is via VPN software (if for example your company provides it and it is single stack (which most is)). Sign on to the free wifi, get your VPN connection up and running ASAP, you are talking through an encrypted tunnel, and you also have your corporate malware filters intrusion detection systems, blacklists (provided they have them, many do) protecting you.

128 bit or greater SSL (which every normal web browser since 2000 supports) is staggeringly difficult for a third party to crack. You have to attack it by either compromising the victims machine (so you get the data before it is even encrypted) or by compromising the private certificate of the providers (which is probably how the NSA does it... it saves the mips on their quantum computer to let them manipulate the stock market ; ) ).
