took a 200 mile ride yesterday - from san francisco to gilroy (and back) -- mostly on highway 35, between san mateo and saratoga, an unbelievable little stretch of highway thats all 2nd and 3rd gear curves, about EIGHTY MILES of curves. good for my soul.

the curves are superb.

i'm pretty sure this sign used to say "motorcycle"

i knew there'd be a way closer in to the last remaining sign

from outside the gates

vroom vroom

my little beauty

enjoy!

I have been though Gilroy more than I would like to admit.
Last time though there I got stuck behind a garlic truck.

It was shedding so many garlic skins while traveling down the road, that my intercooler (volvo c70) got clogged.

It took another 2000 miles before the roasted garlic smell went away.

BG-
That's one of the runs I did each week, when I lived in Palo Alto.

There are actually some MUCH better ones up there....avoid Alice's on weekends, and remember that all of "Skyline" becomes a tad treacherous then, as well.

Try hanging a right on 84 on a Monday AM, next time
Nice to see you posting...and riding!

If you take 35 all the way south to the very end...you can only go right or left. Left takes to on Black Road right to Lexington Dam outside of Los Gatos...last time I was on it there was a bit of slurry on it though...but it sure is twisty and fun otherwise! If you go right, that is a heaven of twisties into Big Basin out to Highway 1...can't remember all of the roads but Big Basin Way and Bear Canyon come to mind as especially fun..you are completely enclosed in the redwoods.

I grew up in La Honda on 84...another popular biking road but as of late has become a magnet for cops due to the antics of motorcyclists...but I sure learned to ride in that area in the mid to late '80s.

California is awesome... I was BORN for the San Fran weather. Alas, there are WAY too many uber-liberal nutjobs for me to spend any length of time there. My uncle works for Wells Fargo out that way, and I've been to visit a few times.

Lovematt- you grew UP in la Honda???!!
DANG!!!!! Black road is wild...what's the tiny little road off to the left before 17, that becomes a twisty-ass one laner and seems to cut back forever through the hills up there?
I used to love that.
even 9 (I think?) Down into Saratoga is great, esp. for dinner at La Fondue.
Buellgirlie- not sure where you're living, but visit LaFondue in Saratoga!

yep...grew up there from 1976 - 1984. Had an XR250 that I rode all over the place both on road and off road. My mom still lives there and is good friends with the guy that lives in the old Merry Prankster place....Ken Keesey I think his name was.

Not sure what the "tiny little road" is by name but I think I know the one you mean...I know of a road that kind of takes you near where 9 comes out at the top between Santa Cruz and Saratoga.

I know Kesey's old place, well.
Just down the road from Applejack's (or was it Whiskyjack's?), after the turn, on the left, over the little bridge.

That little road, I'm not sure if it even had a name, kind of a VERY loooooooooooong 1 lane driveway of sorts.
You lucky bastard, growing up there.
I wanna move back to Palo Alto, stat.

That part of 35 started right at my back door - and was a Favorite ride - my short ride was to hang a right at Alices onto La honda and head for the Coast and then North to home - that and the Point Reyas via hwy 1 run - with some straying through the Panoramic Hwy where great ways to spend a day riding. Those where my weekly constitutionals - just darn good for you!

Now that I live in Antioch - I'm searching for new twisties and trying to avoid boring freeways in the process - no easy task - lol -

Yes Dora - do come - 14680 Washington Ave., San Leandro at 5pm - Strawhat Pizza - should be a Blast!

The problem with ASBN is it's in san leandro during rush hour, this would be pure torture for me to attend...

Are there any decent, twisty, lesser traveled ways to get there from Marin coast?

I love the bay area. I married a girl from Navato. Every time i come out there we go riding on her fathers motorcycle. I love the roads out there. My favorite it to go out to Stension Beach and hit Tonys up for some BBQ oysters.

How are the mountain dirty off road areas out that way ? You know the stuff that the other side of the house enjoys?

(funny I was looking at google maps today at that very area)

I dont know about the dirt roads that you can ride a mc on, but i do know that the Bay has some of the best MTB trails any where! My wife use to be a DH racer, so she has shown me tons of trails. i am sure there are some trails you can take a mc on out that way.

"How are the mountain dirty off road areas out that way ? You know the stuff that the other side of the house enjoys? "

'other side of the house'?

The Bay Area's dirt experience is unbelievable and largely unparalleled.
(I say "largely because of the limitations of my experience in other states' off-road offerings)
One need only visit a dealership that deals in dual-sports to find good 'guides'.
"Citybike" magazine is an outstanding source of info for rides and like-minded enthusiasts.
Many of the really outstanding off-road experiences tend to present in the range east of the coastals.

Super-motard had a very loyal following when I lived there, and the Duke was the order of the day.

Big-displacement dual-Sports, in general, prove archetypal bay Area mounts: they rock for off-piste, the kick ass in areas like The Mission district with it's near-lunar landscape, and the longer suspension travel often makes for superior canyon-carving.

Many were the GS/PDs I'd see along 84 or Skyline, passing Gixxers and Ducs.

Marsh Creek is nice, however, if you want to get your twisty fix - a few more roads need to be added to it - God knows I'm looking.

ASBN is the first Monday of every month - will be on the 4th of this coming month - New Models and Blasts are the evening's Topics - Scott will be with me with the wife chasing - will take the scenic route there - making a holiday of it and 680 to Ygnasio back - nice way to ride there is down 280 to 92 and cut across the bridge there then just a bit of freeway time.

ASBN is American Sport Bike Night. We are in our 10th year. It is a meeting place for Buell (motorcycle ) Enthusiasts in the Bay Area. No Dues, Free Door Prizes, and always a different theme each meeting. AS EZ said, this month we are going to feature the new Buell models, cover the Moto GP, the Moto Giro, and since it is our 10th anniversary we are highlighting a different Buell model each month. This coming month, August, we are covering the Buell Blast. Ez is going to do this for us.
It is basically a place where Buell owners can make connections and find out what is happening in the buell world and also in the Bay area. WE are really blessed to live in the Bay area (even though I now live in PHoenix). The weather is great, the roads are great, and there are a lot of good Buell Friends there.
check out the website: http://www.americansportbikenight.net. It will give you directions to the location.
We have had many different events and people there. a couple of years ago, we had Erik Buell and had a dinner in Monterrey. we have been talking with Kim Tordik , Eriks assistant in the Buell factory. we have been asking for someone from the factory to be at our 10th anniversary in December. Since I travel back and forth between arizona, I will not be at the August meeting, but Woz, Jack, Jim, and Jon will be there. REX

Unfair... great riding weather... the roads are just outside my door... and I gotta do tappy-tappy things on the computer.
Most riders know all the great Bay Area roads. Many don't know some of the smaller jewels:

Fairfax-Bolinas
Jamison Creek
Upper Quimby
Kings Mountain
Big Basin Way
W. Ridgecrest
Felton Empire

... the list is endless.

This pix was taken on W. Ridgecrest. That's Bolinas Lagoon in the distance. Take Fairfax-Bolinas out of Fairfax to Bolinas for lunch, then back up F-B to W. Ridgecrest. (Stories re Bolinas are numerous and humorous. You really have to know where the town is to find it. There are two unmarked roads into it: The locals tear down any CalTrans effort to maintain a "Bolinas This Way" sign.Time has mostly passed the town by, and boy are the residents happy about it!) It's then a roller coaster ride to the summit of Mt. Tam. Do it during the week. And if you do it right you'll be tired exhilarated, and probably be the recipient of a ticket. On two occasions I've spotted, and been spotted by, mountain lions on Ridgecrest while stopped.
