Buell debuts liquid-cooled 1125CR for 2009

EAST TROY, Wis. (July 21, 2008) -

Buell brings superbike performance to the streetfighter category in 2009 with the introduction of the 1125CR, a new model featuring a modern interpretation of “café racer” styling and the power of the Buell Helicon 1125 liquid-cooled V-Twin engine. The 1125CR is one of nine 2009 Buell Sportbike, Streetfighter, Adventure Sportbike and Blast models.

“Part superbike and part streetfighter, the 1125CR is my vision of a 21st century café racer,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “It’s got Clubman-style bars and a flyscreen instead of a fairing. Then we geared it down to optimize acceleration. With a class-leading weight-to-horsepower ratio, the 1125CR takes streetfighter performance to a new level.”

Buell Highlights for 2009 (see separate releases for more detail on each topic)

The Buell 1125CR
A café racer for the 21st century, the new 1125CR nods respectfully to the past with clubman bars, flyscreen and a tail cowl, while a 146-hp, liquid-cooled Buell Helicon 1125 V-Twin engine and Buell Intuitive Response Chassis (IRC) deliver the performance and handling of a modern superbike. Final-drive gearing is lowered about eight percent from the 1125R to optimize acceleration. Its sinister styling will make this bike unmistakable on the street.

New on Buell XB Streetfighters
Buell XB Lightning Streetfighters, powered by an air/oil/fan-cooled Thunderstorm V-Twin, get a menacing new look thanks to a blacked-out frame, forks, engine and other components. Lightning models powered by the Thunderstorm 1203 engine upgrade to the Buell ZTL2 front brake with four-pad, eight-piston caliper, a design that debuted on the 1125R in 2008. The XB12Ss gets fitted with the same supermoto-inspired suspension as the 2008 XB12STT, and the new seat on the 2009 XB9SX lowers the seat height by 1.3 inches to 30.1 inches.

New on Buell Sportbikes
The Buell 1125R, powered by the 146-hp, liquid-cooled Buell Helicon 1125cc V-Twin engine, is available in new body and wheel colors and with tinted windscreens for 2009. Also new for 2009 on the 1125R and 1125CR models are targeted fuel injectors, relocated O2 sensors, and updated engine spark and fuel maps. The combination of these features offers improved drivability below 6000 rpm, even crisper throttle response, improved heat management, and significantly improved fuel economy. The updated engine spark and fuel maps will also be made available for 2008.

1125R models. The Firebolt XB12R, powered by the air/oil/fan-cooled Thunderstorm 1203cc V-Twin, has a new blacked-out frame, swingarm, powertrain, forks and other components. The performance of the 12R is even better in 2009 with the addition of the eight-piston Buell ZTL2 front brake, and new high-performance Pirelli Diablo Corsa III tires.

New on Buell Adventure Sportbikes
The sport-touring Buell Ulysses XB12XT, introduced mid-year 2008, joins the versatile, all-road Ulysses XB12X in the 2009 Buell Adventure Sportbike category. Both models feature new aluminum footpegs with an aggressive “sawtooth” pattern. The new Buell Ulysses Police XB12XP is a “special duty” motorcycle intended for government agencies and private security firms requiring a quick and very nimble pursuit-and-patrol vehicle capable of travel over a variety of road surfaces. It comes equipped with a special wiring harness for easy installation of an Emergency Response Kit, which includes special compact, hard-shell top and side cases, a siren, and LED police pursuit lamps.

New Drive Belt
All 2009 Buell XB models will be fitted with a new, more durable Veyance Hibrex drive belt with Flexten Plus technology, the same belt technology that was originally developed for the Buell 1125R.

Economical Buell Blast
The easy-handling and affordable Buell Blast inspires confidence in new riders and offers performance to satisfy an experienced motorcyclist. Powered by a 34-horsepower, 492cc single-cylinder engine, the 360-pound Blast can achieve 73 mpg highway fuel economy. The Blast is the training vehicle for the Rider’s Edge New Rider course, which has trained more than 100,000 riders since 2000. For 2009, the Blast is offered in new Sunfire Yellow, and Midnight Black, both with Stardust Silver wheels.

The Buell Lightning XB12S and Lightning Super TT XB12STT will not be produced for 2009.

Buell Adventure Sportbikes are dynamic performers

EAST TROY, Wis. (July 21, 2008) -

The 2009 Buell Adventure Sportbike line includes two Ulysses models created for riders seeking a motorcycling experience beyond the ordinary. While the Ulysses XB12X and Ulysses XB12XT are designed to perform distinctly different missions, each offers a combination of comfort, versatility and performance that make them among the most dynamic motorcycles on any road today.

The Buell Trilogy of Technology – chassis rigidity, mass centralization, and low unsprung weight – forms the foundation of both Ulysses models. The hollow aluminum perimeter frame is the core of a rigid chassis, and doubles as a 4.4-gallon fuel tank to help lower the center of gravity. For the same reason, the muffler is located below the engine, and the Ulysses swingarm is also does double duty as the oil reservoir. The 103-hp Buell Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin engine is tuned to deliver a broad powerband and the on-demand torque a rider can use in the real world.

An upright riding position, comfortable ergonomics, and rider-focused features like a two-piece windscreen, adjustable suspension and heated hand grips, make these Ulysses models truly multi-function motorcycles, ready for commuting, touring and back-road exploration. Handling is intuitive. The performance is thrilling.

New on Buell Adventure Sport Models for 2009
Improved Drive Belt – A new Veyance Hibrex drive belt with Flexten Plus technology, based on the belt developed for the Buell 1125R, has increased strength and durability.

Improved Footpegs – New black footpegs have an aggressive sawtooth pattern for optimal foot stability in all conditions and riding positions.

New Ulysses Police model – The Ulysses Police XB12XP is designed for use by government agencies in situations requiring travel on paved and unpaved roads and the agility and performance of an adventure sport motorcycle. It is equipped with police-specific lighting, a larger top case and more-compact side cases, and other special equipment. (See separate release for full details.)

2009 Ulysses XB12X
With long-travel suspension, generous 6.75-inch ground clearance, and aggressive Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires, the Buell Ulysses XB12X can carry its rider over dirt, gravel and other unpaved road surfaces. On smooth pavement, the XB12X performs as a high-performance sport motorcycle, ready to blitz through the twisties.

A wide Supermoto-style handlebar gives the rider extra leverage and control behind wind deflectors and a two-piece windscreen designed to limit buffeting. The broad, torque-filled powerband of the 103-hp Buell Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin engine gives the Ulysses the ability to proceed at lower speeds over unpaved roads with less gear shifting, and the power to bomb down paved backroads.

Premium Showa front (6.51 inches travel) and rear (6.38 inches travel) suspension is fully adjustable. Rear spring preload can be adjusted by turning a dial located below the left side of the seat. Features that help make the XB12X adventure-ready include the Triple Tail system, which folds through three positions to function as a luggage rack with tie-down hooks over the rear seat position, as a cushioned passenger backrest with grab rails, or as a luggage rack extended over the rear fender. Optional top and side cases are also available for the XB12X as accessory items. A dual front fender system provides debris protection for the rider and the bike. The XB12X is offered with Barricade Orange or Thrust Blue bodywork.

Liquid-cooled 1125CR joins Buell Street line-up

EAST TROY, Wis. (July 21, 2008) -

Part superbike and part streetfighter, the 2009 Buell 1125CR combines the soul of the classic café racer with the thrilling performance and advanced technology demanded by today’s most-passionate sportbike riders.

The new 1125CR joins three XB Lightning models in the Buell Street line-up for 2009: The Lightning CityX XB9SX is a quick-revving middleweight designed to negotiate the traffic and potholes of the urban roadscape. The lowered suspension and seat shape of the Lightning XB12Scg offer a shorter reach to the ground with no performance compromise. The Lightning XB12Ss offers an expanded cockpit, low profile sculpted seat and increased suspension travel featured previously on the Lightning Super TT XB12STT. The Super TT and XB12S will not be produced for 2009.

Buell motorcycles are distilled from the three elements of the Buell Trilogy of Technology – mass centralization, chassis rigidity, and low unsprung weight – to produce a motorcycle which responds instantly to rider input. The styling is aggressive and deliberately displays the mechanical elements of Buell’s innovative design. The broad powerband of a Buell V-Twin engine keeps abundant power on tap at all times, in all gears and in any situation.

New on Buell Streetfighters for 2009
Blacked-Out Component Styling – To reinforce the aggressive styling of the Buell Streetfighter line, new black finishes are applied to the frame, swingarm, engine, fork tubes, triple clamps, brake calipers and other components.

ZTL2 Front Brake – XB Lightning models powered by the 1203 Thunderstorm engine are now equipped with the ZTL2 front brake. The eight-piston caliper design offers a larger pad surface, optimizes heat-dissipation capability and allows even pressure distribution over each of the four pads in the caliper. A single 375 mm stainless steel rotor mounted directly to the wheel rim produces outstanding stopping power, weighs less than a dual-disc system, and permits the use of a very lightweight front wheel that helps reduce steering inertia and unsprung weight.

Improved Drive Belt – A new Veyance Hibrex drive belt with Flexten Plus technology, based on the belt developed for the Buell 1125R, is stronger and more durable than the previous drive belt.

Buell 1125CR
Naked styling and clubman-style handlebar give a respectful nod to the nostalgic era of café racers. A 146-hp liquid-cooled V-Twin engine is geared for acceleration. Sinister styling. Sophisticated technology. The 1125CR, Erik Buell’s 21st century interpretation of the classic café racer, is a new motorcycle that defies convention and expands the streetfigher category in the direction of superbike performance.

Positioned behind the black-anodized, tapered aluminum clubman-style handlebar and streamlined headlight and flyscreen, the rider has a wide-open view forward that intensifies the sensation of speed. With a dry weight of 375 pounds, the 1125CR is the lightest liter-class streetfighter on the market, and combined with 146 horsepower, it offers the best weight-to-horsepower ratio in the category.

The Buell 1125CR offers liquid-cooled technology and responsive handling from a proven platform based on the Buell Trilogy of Tech principles. The Buell Helicon 1125 powertrain provides the foundation for this riding experience. This 1125cc DOHC V-Twin engine features a compact, 72-degree design and is rated at 146 crankshaft horsepower and 82 ft. lbs. of peak torque. Buell DDFI3 closed-loop EFI produces throttle operation with a quick, smooth response.

New for 2009 on the 1125R and 1125CR models are targeted fuel injectors, relocated O2 sensors, and updated engine spark and fuel maps. The combination of these features offers improved drivability below 6000rpm, even crisper throttle response, improved heat management, and significantly improved fuel economy. The updated engine spark and fuel maps will also be made available for 2008 1125R models. A ram-air system pressurizes the 12-liter air box for a gain in peak performance. Twin side mounted radiators within aerodynamic cowlings lower the center of gravity (cg) and centralize mass. The exhaust system features an underslung muffler mounted below the engine to optimize cg location and mass centralization. An HVA (Hydraulic Vacuum Assist) Slipper Action clutch features hydraulic actuation from the hand control with assistance from engine vacuum for lighter clutch effort and reduced engine braking. Low 76/27 (2.815:1) final-drive gearing produces outstanding acceleration.

The engine is rigid-mounted as a structural component of the Buell Intuitive Response Chassis (IRC) that has outstanding torsional stiffness, yet is compliant in the planes required to help absorb mid-corner bumps, and doubles as a 5.3-gallon fuel reservoir. Showa 47 mm inverted forks and a Showa rear shock absorber are both fully adjustable. Positive braking performance is provided by the Buell ZTL2 front brake system. The rear brake caliper is mounted directly to the inner surface of the swing arm and weighs 1.5 pounds less than a typical rear-brake design.

All this performance is packaged in a motorcycle that is visually stunning. A narrow headlight pod incorporates a clipped flyscreen, while a removable cowl covers the passenger seat section. The blacked-out frame and chassis components contrast with red highlights on the front brake caliper, wheel rims, rear shock spring and damping adjusters atop the fork tubes. The Buell 1125CR will be offered with Racing Red or Midnight Black bodywork. Production of the 2009 1125CR is scheduled to begin in August 2008.

Buell 1125CR highlights

* Buell Helicon 1125cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke 72-degree V-Twin engine

Buell Lightning XB12Ss
With a 53.7-inch wheelbase, the Lightning Long XB12Ss offers an expanded cockpit for the rider, a larger passenger position and 4.4-gallon fuel-in-frame capacity for extended range. For 2009, the suspension is upgraded to offer the supermoto-like handling previously found on the Lightning Super TT, with front and rear travel extended to 5.6 inches. A new, sculpted Streetfighter saddle maintains seat height at 30.6 inches and covers a handy storage compartment. The new Buell ZTL2 eight-piston front caliper enhances braking performance. A fuel-injected Buell Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin engine with Buell InterActive Exhaust pounds out the power. The Lightning Long is available with Midnight Black, Cherry Bomb Translucid, or Hero Blue Translucid bodywork.

The powerful Buell ZTL2 eight-piston front brake caliper is new for 2009. Blacked-out engine, frame, swingarm, fork and other components give the XB12Scg a menacing new look. The muscular Buell Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin backs it up with pavement-pounding power. Available with Midnight Black, Cherry Bomb Translucid, or Hero Blue Translucid bodywork.

The quick-revving nature and broad powerband of the Buell Thunderstorm 984 V-Twin engine lets the CityX pull briskly away from traffic and acceleration past pesky cabs, while an upright rider position, wide Supermoto-style handlebars and intuitive handling help the CityX scat around potholes and dodge through back alleys. A new saddle shape for 2009 drops the seat height by 1.3 inches to 30.1 inches. Hand deflectors, dual headlight grilles, and frame pucks fend off minor cosmetic damage. It's not really a triple post - they did three press releases with somewhat different info in each one. Some repetitive as well.

But yes, it was a little faster to just post them in their entirety than pick through them for dupe info.

Take it for what it's worth! I still haven't heard from our guys in Vegas, and it looks like H-D.com is still not updated. So I suppose I will sit here and wait.

I thought the they said that the gearing on the 1125CR was lowered for better acceleration. When you do a comparison to the 1125r the gearing is the same... and same as the 2008 version 1125r.

And why the heck is this bike longer then the 1125r?

Melvin- the final drive is different.

1125R: 2.593:1 ratio

1125CR: 2.815:1 ratio

It'll be interesting to see if there's a different belt for the two models.

In other words, this bike has changed hardly at all for 10 years. For the glass-is-half-full crowd, that's a sign of a great machine. For the rest of us, it's a darn shame it didn't get a makeover.

So, any opinions yet? What are the major differences between the 08 and 09 XB12XT? IT did get a $500 price bump. I do not see a lot of changes. Am I missing something?

Yes, along with all XB's ever built getting the new drive belt, and recall all pre-2008 XB's to put in the different motor. Oh yea I want them to recall my 06 SS because it doesn't have blacked out engine cases! Damn them to hell for making us pay for changes to a newer model year bike! While I'm at it, I should have Chevy recall my Monte Carlo because they came out with a V8 a year later! Bastards!
