It's coming together at the moment. All the big parts are now out of the house and it should be in one piece later tonight.

This is nothing compared to when I rebuilt the heads of our old Dodge V-8 in the kitchen of an apartment.

Like most women when she gets what she wants she's great , but cross her and it's

PS - Court... Has the book gone to press?

(Outta the loop - been drowning in the meandering doldrums of the impossible dream.)

Ever since your domain went away, I have been dying for the next installment! Good to see you posting again Captain!

Can't imagine how hard it must be now with fuel prices being what they are... probably mathematically impossible...

It is/was, Reep. But since I've converted the boat to burning WVO, the fuel crunch is starting to work for me. The local expense-fishermen aren't making their expenses, and the fish supply is drying up. But the demand for WVO is growing as more and more folks start experimenting with it. It's gone up a dime to a whopping $.60/gal., but that's still a whole lot better than $5.78/gal. for diesel.

I ain't whipped yet! As soon as I can get the new pistons and liners out of the living room

18:1 Pistons

and into the block, and that big pile of parts outta the fish hold and bolted back in place, Dewey and I will proceed with the proceedin's, and this saga will continue on. Those fish have been laughing since the first of the year, but our turn's commin'.

"Freedom Fries" has taken on a new meaning for us.

Long Live MacDonald's!

Adapt or perish with the herd.

Haven't had any interactions w/ any shrimp yet, Thang, but I have one last experimental trawl to lose before throwing in the towel on that part of the dream.

The next big experiment, to reduce ice costs, is to see if we can bring these fish to the dock alive. If it works out, that will also eliminate shelf life limitations and we can start traveling (with the new dependable engine) in search of denser accumulations of biomass. (That was for the scientific types out there. The rest of y'all can read that as More Fish.

And then, and then, and then... if all that comes to pass, the final stage will be to see if we can ship live fish to Hong Kong. Anyone priced a live fish dinner in HK lately?

Meanwhile, I spend $1.00 a day on groceries and live without benefit of utilities in my meager abode, and only have Internet access due to the generosity of the family living aboard the boat tied up next to me, who have given me the password to their wireless LAN, which just makes it across the dock to the Rim Reaper. (I'm blessed with good fortune, but the cost of chasing a dream can still get tedious. But if Dewey can hack it, so can I.)

Good to hear from you Captain!

OK, Reep. I'm going to go out on a limb a little bit here. Once again, this is non-fiction, although the names have been changed. It's a commercial fishing story, although not about fishing, per se.

And I'll warn you ahead of time that it's not a happy story. But it's a story that is way too common in the commercial fishing fleet. It's not always rough seas and sinking boats that get you in this business.

Oh, man, I'm not sure I want to read the end of this one.

As always, Pete, the writing is superb. I can put myself there.

Thanks.

Thanks, Tom. Kind of a tough one to tell.

But last I heard, "David" was winning the battle, but that's a relative term. In my experience with those who have fallen into that trap, the personal integrity that's lost is rarely regained, so you can never be sure what's true and what isn't. In any event, the battle for them is never over. It begins anew every morning. It's just a damn shame that our society classifies these poor souls as criminals.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Wish I could, Pammy. But I've got to see this thing through, first.

But Reep inspired me to write a little something this morning for the first time in ages. Of course, I didn't get started jamming the pistons into the liners the way I planned. But it was a nice diversion, and I needed a little time off anyway.

It's a little story about the time when Mutt fell overboard. I might recall you having a guy like Mutt working for you. Or, maybe it was a customer? You'll probably recognize the type.
